Este documento explica el uso del gerundio en inglés. El gerundio termina en "-ing" y funciona como sustantivo, sujeto u objeto. Después de ciertos verbos como "enjoy" y "remember", se usa el gerundio en lugar del infinitivo. El gerundio también puede usarse como sujeto u objeto después de una preposición, y puede ser modificado por adjetivos.

en –ing, igual que los participios presentes.
A pesar de ser idénticos en apariencia,
desempeñan diferentes oficios en la oración.

El gerundio en ingles es la forma verbal que termina
en –ing y actúa como sustantivo (noun); sujeto
(subject) u objeto (object) de otra parte de la oración.
En inglés se hace un uso mucho más extenso del
gerundio que en español y merece gran atención.
Reading is my hobby.
La lectura es mi pasatiempo favorito.
Young people are fond of dancing.
Los jóvenes son aficionados al baile.
I remember doing it.
Recuerdo haberlo hecho.

Después de ciertos verbos debe usarse el
gerundio y nunca el infinitivo.
Estos verbos son:
enjoy (disfrutar, gustar)
mind (molestarle)
stop (parar)
miss (faltar, extrañar, faltar)
avoid (evitar)
consider (considerar)

Ciertos otros verbos pueden ser seguidos
de gerundios o infinitivos indistintamente,
como begin, continue, hate, prefer,
like, intend., etc.
He hates to study.
He hates studying.
No le gusta estudiar.
We begin to work at eight.
We begin working at eight.
Comenzamos a trabajar a las ocho.

a) Como ya hemos visto, el gerundio en
inglés puede usarse como sustantivo.
Por lo tanto, igual que el nombre o
sustantivo, también puede usarse el
gerundio como sujeto u objeto de
cualquier preposición.
I need more practice in speaking.
Necesito más práctica en hablar.
He is tired of waiting.
El está cansado de esperar.

habla española tiende a cometer el
error de usar el infinitivo después de
una preposición, como se
acostumbra en español.
En inglés, generalmente, se emplea
el gerundio después de una
preposición.

b) Ya que el gerundio desempeña la
función del nombre, también
puede ser modificado por un
adjetivo.
Do you mind my smoking?
¿Le molesta a usted que yo fume?
There is good fishing in that spot.
La pesca es buena en ese lugar.
