Nunca llevan infinitivo con to detrás, excepto be able to, need to, have to y ought to.. No tienen infinitivo, participio ni tiempos compuestos.
NOTA: Los verbos have to y need to también se consideran “verbos semimodales” porque no cumplen todas las características propias de los verbos modales.
CAN / BE ABLE TO
CAN se auxilia de be able to en los tiempos de que carece, y tiene muchos usos:
a) Para expresar habilidad o capacidad: “saber”, “poder”.
d) Para indicar posibilidad:
We can do that later.
You can´t smoke here. (No puedes fumar aquí).
BE ABLE TO también indica habilidad y posibilidad como can, pero en los tiempos que le faltan a este verbo modal.

COULD

2. VERBOS MODALES (MODALS)
COMENZAREMOS A DESARROLLAR EN UNA SERIE DE ARTÍCULOS UNA
CATEGORÍA DE VERBOS AUXILIARES QUE SE CONOCEN CON EL
NOMBRE DE VERBOS MODALES. RECIBEN ESTE NOMBRE DADO QUE
DIFIEREN DE LOS VERBOS REGULARES E IRREGULARES PORQUE
CUMPLEN FUNCIONES ESPECÍFICAS DE SU GRUPO. ESTOS SE UTILIZAN
EN COMBINACIÓN CON OTROS VERBOS PARA EXPRESAR DIFERENTES
GRADOS DE CAPACIDAD, POSIBILIDAD, PERMISO, NECESIDAD,
OBLIGACIÓN, PROHIBICIÓN, SEGURIDAD, ETC., REFERIDOS AL VERBO
PRINCIPAL.
VEREMOS A CONTINUACIÓN LOS PRINCIPALES VERBOS MODALES DE
LA LENGUA INGLESA:
He must study the lesson.
Él debe estudiar la lección.
She can go to the party.
Ella puede ir a la fiesta.
VERBOS MODALES FORMA NEGATIVA
CAN CAN NOT/ CAN´T
COULD COULD NOT/ COULDN´T
MIGHT MIGHT NOT
MAY MAY NOT
SHOULD SHOULD
NOT/SHOULDN´T
WILL WILL NOT/WON´T
WOULD WOULD NOT/WOULDN´T
MUST MUST NOT/ MUSTN´T
4. TAMBIÉN DEBEMOS DECIR QUE NO SE UTILIZAN CON OTROS
AUXILIARES (DON’T /DOESN’T) PARA CONSTRUIR
UNA ORACIÓN NEGATIVA, YA QUE COMO VERÁN EN EL CUADRO
SUPERIOR LOS VERBOS MODALES POSEEN SU PROPIA FORMA,
POR EJEMPLO:
THEY MUST NOT TRAVEL TO FRANCE.
ELLOS NO DEBEN VIAJAR A FRANCIA.
I CAN NOT DO THE HOMEWORK.
YO NO PUEDO HACER LA TAREA.
Verbos Modales: CAN
5. OBSERVE QUE EL VERBO CAN SIEMPRE VA ACOMPAÑADO
POR UN VERBO PRINCIPAL EN INFINITIVO Y COMO YA HEMOS
MENCIONADO, EN LAS TERCERAS PERSONAS DEL SINGULAR
NO SE LE AGREGA LA S.
PARA INTERROGAR UTILIZANDO EL VERBO MODAL CAN,
DEBEMOS COLOCARLO AL COMIENZO DE LA PREGUNTA, POR
EJEMPLO:
He can build a house. Él puede construir una
casa.
They can repair the car. Ellos pueden reparar el
coche.
It is expensive but I can buy
it.
Es costoso pero yo puedo
comprarlo.
You can dance better. Tú puedes bailar mejor.
Can you lend me money? Puedes prestarme dinero?
Could he repair the car? Pudo él reparar el coche?
6. VERBOS MODALES: MAY – MIGHT
verbo modal can.
They may forgive me. Ellos pueden perdonarme.
She may decide to travel to
Spain.
Ella puede decidir viajar a
España.
He may accept your
request.
Él puede aceptar tu pedido.
7. VERBOS MODALES: MUST
HABLAREMOS EN ESTA OPORTUNIDAD SOBRE OTRO DE
LOS VERBOS MODALES DEL IDIOMA INGLÉS: EL VERBO MUST Y AL
CUAL SE LE PUEDEN ATRIBUIR DOS SIGNIFICADOS PRINCIPALES:
PARA INDICAR QUE ESTAMOS SEGUROS DE LA CERTEZA DE ALGO Y
TAMBIÉN PARA EXPRESAR UNA OPINIÓN, ES DECIR, INDICAR QUE
ES NECESARIO HACER ALGO, POR EJEMPLO:
She may forget the
problems.
Ella puede olvidar los
problemas.
She might forget the
problems.
Ella podría olvidar los
problemas.
You may pay the bills. Tú puedes pagar las cuentas.
You might pay the bills. Tú podrías pagar las
cuentas.
8. Para emplear el verbo modal MUST en
una interrogación, debemos colocarlo al comienzo de
la pregunta, por ejemplo:
He must have a lot of money. Él debe tener mucho dinero.
(Indica la certeza que posee gran
cantidad de dinero)
She must be at home.
You must follow the rules. Tú debes respetar las reglas.
(Opino que es tu obligación respetar
las reglas)

(Opino que deberían ser más
atentos)

today?
¿Debes ir hoy a la
escuela?
Must we visit your parents? ¿Debemos visitar a tus
padres?
9. VERBOS MODALES: SHOULD
CONTINUAMOS CON LOS VERBOS MODALES Y EN ESTE CASO
HABLAREMOS DE SHOULD. SE TRATA DE UN VERBO
MODAL QUE SE UTILIZA PARA EXPRESAR CONVENIENCIA, POR
EJEMPLO:
He should get a new job. Él debería conseguir un
nuevo trabajo.
You should study English. Tú deberías estudiar inglés.
They should know the truth. Ellos deberían conocer la
verdad.
10. VERBOS MODALES: WOULD
YA HEMOS VISTO EN OTRA OPORTUNIDAD QUE
UTILIZAMOS WOULD (PASADO DE WILL) COMO AUXILIAR
PARA CONSTRUIR EL CONDICIONAL SIMPLE QUE SIRVE PARA DESCRIBIR
SITUACIONES QUE OCURREN EN EL FUTURO PERO CUYO PUNTO DE
PARTIDA SE ENCUENTRA EN UN TIEMPO PASADO, ES DECIR QUE INDICA
UNA ACCIÓN QUE EN EL PASADO SE POSICIONABA EN EL FUTURO Y A LA
CUAL HACEMOS REFERENCIA EN EL PRESENTE, POR EJEMPLO:
You have saved a lot of
money so you should buy a
new car.
Tú has ahorrado mucho
dinero por lo que deberías
comprar un nuevo coche.
She has worked the whole
year so she should have
holidays.
Ella ha trabajado todo el año
por lo que debería tener
vacaciones.
11. I KNEW THAT SHE WOULD TRAVEL TO LONDON.
YO SABÍA QUE ELLA VIAJARÍA A LONDRES.
TAMBIÉN SE UTILIZA PARA INDICAR SITUACIONES QUE NO SE PUEDEN
REALIZAR YA QUE DEPENDEN DE UNA CONDICIÓN QUE PUEDE ESTAR
EXPRESADA O NO:
WE WOULD BUY A NEW CAR.
NOSOTROS COMPRARÍAMOS UN NUEVO AUTOMÓVIL.
(PARA QUE LOGREMOS COMPRAR EL COCHE SE DEBE CUMPLIR
UNA CONDICIÓN QUE EN ESTE CASO NO ESTÁ EXPRESADA)
AHORA VEREMOS COMO WOULD CUMPLE SU FUNCIÓN
DE VERBO MODAL ACOMPAÑADO DEL INFINITIVO DEL VERBO
GUSTAR LIKE PARA EXPRESAR FRASES DE
CORTESÍA YA SEAN INVITACIONES U OFRECIMIENTOS:
Would you like a
chocolate?
¿Te gustaría un chocolate?
