DICEN
Dicen que en estos tiempos es
imposible soñar. Que es imposible
construir. Que tenemos que irnos.
Que no hay salida. Es cierto que
es difícil empezar y aún lo es más
sostenerse. Tenerife Shorts está
aquí por un esfuerzo colectivo, por
la ilusión de un grupo de personas
que han decidido rebelarse ante las
voces que intentaban ahogar una
iniciativa cultural desde los már-
genes. No consiguieron desactivar
la ilusión que nos ha movilizado
durante un año de preparativos.
Estos cuatro días programamos
más de medio centenar de obras
de unos 30 países. Cortometrajes
de calidad contrastada, muchos de
ellos premiados en los festivales de
cine más importantes del panorama
internacional. Retrospectivas, home-
najes y muestras. Y una competición
internacional de la que estamos muy
orgullosos. Un cine que rara vez
llegaba a Canarias. Tenerife Shorts
es un festival que representa a una
isla, a un archipiélago, y que depen-
de directamente de la ciudadanía.
Ni de instituciones públicas, ni de
empresas. Se presenta esta primera
edición en Santa Cruz, una capital
que merece una vida cultural más
rica de la que se oferta. Hemos lle-
gado hasta aquí haciendo equilibrios,
sin red, arriesgando, pero consi-
guiendo algo que otros darían por
imposible. Ahora dejemos que las
luces se apaguen y que el proyector
ilumine la sala con grandes historias
de corta duración que antes no
podíamos ver. Somos conscientes
de que tendremos muchos proble-
mas, de que somos un festival en
miniatura. Nadie es perfecto, ningún
festival lo es. Pero hemos conse-
guido un objetivo que anhelábamos,
aunque probablemente no está
dentro de ese lenguaje de cifras,
porcentajes, intereses y beneficios.
Por fortuna, Tenerife Shorts no
cabe en esa ecuación. Dicen que a
la gente no le interesa ya el cine.
Dicen que a la gente sólo le preocu-
pan el mercado, el paro y la corrup-
ción. Dicen que es imposible. Que
no es rentable. Y puede que tengan
razón. Pero no íbamos a dejar de
intentarlo sólo por lo que dicen.

Claudio Utrera
(Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1948)
Colaborador habitual como crítico
cinematográfico desde 1968 en decenas
de publicaciones regionales y naciona-
les, comenzó su actividad profesional
en este campo en la década de los 60
en los periódicos El Eco de Canarias y
Diario de Las Palmas, publicando pos-
teriormente sus trabajos en los diarios
La Provincia y en Canarias 7, así como
en diversas revistas especializadas de
ámbito nacional e internacional.
A partir de 1975 desempeñó el cargo
de Secretario de la Comisión de Cine
y Audiovisuales del Plan Cultura del
Cabildo de Gran Canaria, que dirigió a
la vuelta de su exilio en México el pro-
fesor Millares Carló. Fue colaborador
habitual de la revista madrileña Cinema
2002, así como presentador y guionista
del programa de TVE-C Cine Canario,
espacio que le servirá para difundir en
el Archipiélago la producción cinema-
tográfica autóctona con la presencia
en los coloquios de algunos de los más
prestigiosos cineastas españoles. Fue
asimismo presentador y guionista en el
programa Buenas Tardes de Televi-
sión Española en Canarias desde donde
comentaba la actualidad cinematográ-
fica mundial. Trabajó asimismo como
enviado especial de diversos medios en
los festivales internacionales de Cannes,
Berlín, Venecia, San Sebastián, Vallado-
lid y La Habana, entre otros. Entre 1984
y 1988 ejerció el cargo de Coordinador
de la Filmoteca Canaria.
Since 1968, Claudio Utrera has been a
regular contributor as a film critic for
tens of regional and national publica-
tions. He began his professional career
in this field in the 1960s with the news-
papers El Eco de Canarias and Diario
de Las Palmas, and later published his
work in the newspapers La Provincia
and in Canarias 7, in addition to differ-
ent specialized magazines on a national
and international level.
Starting in 1975, he has held the post
of Secretary of the Commission of Film
and Audiovisuals for the Cultural Plan
of theTown Council of Gran Canaria,
which the professor Millars Carló
directed upon his return from exile in
Mexico. He worked as special envoy
for different media at international
film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin,
Venecia, San Sebastian, Valladolid, and
La Havana, among others. In 1984 he
was named coordinator of the Canaria
Film Archives, a post he held until the
month of October 1988. He was a regu-
lar contributor on the Madrid magazine

Certainly it is difficult to start and
even more to keep standing.Tenerife
Shorts is here because of a collec-
tive effort, because of the illusion
of a group of people who decided
to rebel against the voices trying to
drown a cultural initiative from the
borders.They did not get off the illu-
sion that made us move in the last
year of preparation.These four days
we programmed almost sixty works
from about 30 countries. Short films
of quality, many of which have won
awards at major film festivals on the
international scene. Retrospectives,
tributes and showcases. And we are
very proud of our international com-
petition. A kind of cinema that rarely
reached the Canary Islands.Tenerife
Shorts is a festival that represents an
island, an archipelago, and which re-
ports directly to the public. Neither of
public institutions or companies. We
introduce the first edition in Santa
Cruz, a capital that deserves a richer
cultural life of than the existing offer.
We have come so far creating bal-
ances, without a safety net, risking,
but getting something that others
would say that´s impossible. Now let
the lights go out and the projector
illuminates the room with great short
stories that we could not see before.
We realize that we will have many
problems, that we are a miniature
festival. Nothing is perfect, there´s
no a perfect festival. But we have
achieved a goal that wee wished for
so long, though probably it is not in
the language of numbers, percentag-
es, interests and benefits. Fortunately
Tenerife Shorts does not fit into that
equation.They say that people are
not interested in films.They say that
people only care about the market,
unemployment and corruption.They
say it’s impossible.That this is not
profitable. And they may be right.
But we would not stop trying just
because of what they say.

Cinema 2002, where he analyzed dif-
ferent aspects of the film phenomenon.
He was a presenter and writer for the
TVE-C program Cine Canario, which
allowed him to broadcast a local film
production with discussions with some
of the most prestigious Spanish film-
makers of the time.
He was also a presenter and writer for
the program BuenasTardes on Span-
ishTelevision in Canarias, where he
commented on current events in film
worldwide.
He has done conferences on film in
Los Amigos Canarios delTeatro, Cine
y Música, el Ateneo de La Laguna,
Canaria Film Archives, CAAM (Centro
Atlántico de Arte Contemporáneo),
Universidad de Verano de El Escorial,
Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoameri-
cano, Spanish Film Archives, among
others. He has been the director of the
International Film Festival of Las Pal-
mas de Gran Canaria since 1999.
Antonio Herrera
Antonio Herrera es guionista de ficción
para cine y televisión por la Universidad
Pontificia de Salamanca. Ha trabajado
en una serie de la Televisión Autonómi-
ca Canaria, ha obtenido diversos
galardones por guiones de cortomet-
raje y relatos cortos, ha participado
en el programa LEAC, es Presidente
del jurado del Certamen de guiones
de cortometrajes de la Universidad de
La Laguna y actualmente desarrolla un
proyecto de largometraje con ayuda
de una subvención para la preproduc-
ción del Gobierno de Canarias: dicho
proyecto se ha mostrado hasta la fecha
en 3 mercados de co-producción cel-
ebrados en Canarias.
Antonio Herrera is a film and televi-
sion fiction screenwriter which studied
at the Pontifical University of Sala-
manca. He has worked on aTV serie
of RegionalTelevision, he has won
several awards for short film scripts
and short stories, also has participated
in the LEAC, he is the president of the
judges of scripts for short films at the
University of La Laguna and currently
develops a feature project with the
help of a grant for the preproduction
of the Canary Goverment: the project
has shown so far in 3 co-production
markets held in the Canary Islands.
Emilio Ramal Soriano
Nacido en Valencia en 1971, reside en
Canarias desde los 7 años. Es licen-
ciado y DEA en Historia del Arte por
la Universidad de La Laguna: Itinerario
curricular realizado en Historia del
Cine y Medios Audiovisuales. Miembro
de la Asociación Española de Historia-
dores del Cine desde 1999, ha par-
ticipado como jurado en diferentes
certámenes cinematográficos como el
Foro Canario en el 13º Festival Interna-
cional de Cine de Las Palmas de Gran
Canaria, el Festival de Cine Digital Isla
de La Palma (Festivalito), Canarias
Rueda, Festival Internacional de Cine
Gay y Lésbico de Tenerife, Festival
de Cortos Villa de La Orotava, Festival
CineEscena y en diversas comisiones
de valoración del Audiovisual para
Canarias Cultura en Red, como la Mesa
de Expertos Sectoriales del Audiovisual
para la confección del Plan Estratégico
del Sector Cultural Canario, Patrocinio
de cortometrajes cinematográficos
y el Catálogo Canarias en Corto. Ha
colaborado como crítico cinematográ-
fico con numerosos medios de co-
municación del Archipiélago, así como
en publicaciones especializadas y ha
sido ponente en Congresos y Cursos
relacionados con la Historia del Cine
y el Audiovisual. En el ámbito de la
gestión cultural, siempre vinculada con
el cine y el audiovisual, es egresado del
Curso Superior Universitario en Gestión
y Planificación Cultural de la ULL y la
Fundación Pedro García Cabrera, ha
sido Coordinador de programación
del Cine Víctor, en la capital tinerfeña
entre 2003 y 2008, y desde enero de
2009 es Jefe del Departamento de Ac-
tividades Audiovisuales de TEA Tenerife
Espacio de las Artes, donde coordina
la programación cinematográfica y
audiovisual de este centro del Cabildo
de Tenerife.
Born in Valencia in 1971, has lived in
the Canary Islands since the age of
seven. He is a graduate and holder of
an Advanced Studies Diploma in the
History of Art from the University of
La Laguna: Study on the History of
the Cinema and Audiovisual Media.

the Canarian Cultural Sector, Sponsor-
ship of short films and the Canarias en
Corto Catalogue. He has worked as a
film critic with numerous Canarian me-
dia as well as in specialist publications
and has been a speaker at Congresses
and on courses connected with the His-
tory of Cinema and the Audiovisual. In
the sphere of cultural management he
has studied the Advanced University
course on Cultural Management and
Planning run by the University of La
Laguna and the Pedro García Cabrera
Foundation; he was the Programming
Coordinator of Cinema Victor, in Santa
Cruz, the capital ofTenerife, between
2003 and 2008, and, since January
2009, he has been the Head of Depart-
ment for Audiovisual Activities atTEA
Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, where he
has coordinated the film and audiovi-
sual programming of this centre run by
theTenerife Island Authority or Cabildo.
