5. SURCANDO LA TARDE DORADA
Surcando la tarde dorada,
nos lleva, ociosos, el agua,
pues son bracitos menudos
los que empuñan los remos
pretendiendo en vano con sus manecitas
guiar nuestro curso errante.
¡Ah! ¡Qué crueles las tres!
Sin reparar en el bálsamo de aquel día
ni en el ensueño de aquella hora
¡exigen un cuento de una voz sin aliento
que ni una pluma puede soplar!
Pero ¿que podría voz tan débil
contra el porfiar de esas tres?
Prima, imperiosa, fulmina su edicto:
“¡que empiece el cuento!”
Secunda, con tono más amable, desea
“que no sean tonterías”.
Mientras que Tertia interrumpe el cuento
no más de una vez por minuto.
Impuesto, al fin, el silencio
la imaginación las lleva
en pos de esa niña soñada
por un mundo de raras maravillas
en el que los pájaros y las bestias recobran
el habla
¡y casi creen estar allí de veras!
Y cada vez que ese desgraciado intentaba,
agotada ya la fuente de su invención,
aplazar la narración hasta el siguiente día:
“El resto será para la próxima vez...”
“Ya es la próxima vez!”, a coro las tres.
Así fue surgiendo el País de las Maravillas
poco a poco; y una a una
el cincelado de sus extrañas peripecias...
Y ahora que el relato toca a su fin,
también el timón nos guía de vuelta al hogar;
alegre tripulación, bajo el sol que se pone.
¡Alicia! Recibe este cuento infantil
y deposítalo con mano amable
allí donde descansan los sueños de la niñez
entrelazados en mística guirnalda de la
Memoria
como las flores ya marchitas
ofrenda de un peregrino

7. DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE
Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank,
and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the
book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in
it, `and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice `without pictures or
conversation?'
So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the
hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of
making a daisy- chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and
picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran
close by her.

Alicia empezaba a estar cansada de estar sentada con su hermana en la orilla
y de no tener nada que hacer: una o dos veces había echado un vistazo al
libro que su hermana estaba leyendo, pero no tenía dibujos ni diálogos, y
«¿de qué sirve un libro si no tiene dibujos ni diálogos?» pensó Alicia.
Así que puso a considerar (lo que mejor pudo, porque el caluroso día le hacía
sentirse soñolienta y atontada), si el placer de hacer una guirnalda de
margaritas compensaría la molestia de levantarse y coger las flores cuando,

8. There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much
out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, `Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be
late!' (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to
have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when
the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat- pocket, and looked at it,
and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind
that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a
watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field
after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole
under the hedge.
No había nada de especial en eso, y tampoco le pareció muy raro oír al Conejo
decirse a sí mismo «¡Dios mio! ¡Dios mio! ¡Voy a llegar tarde!» (Cuando
volvió a pensar en ello más tarde, pensó que debía haberse sorprendido,

9. In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how
in the world she was to get out again.
The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then
dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to
think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a
very deep well.
Poco después le siguió Alicia, aunque sin pararse a penar cómo iba a salir
luego de allí.
Al principio la madriguera era en línea recta, como un túnel, luego caía hacía
abajo tan bruscamente que Alicia no tuvo tiempo de retroceder antes de
caerse por un pozo muy hondo.

10. Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty
of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was
going to happen next. First, she tried to look down and make out what
she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything; then she
looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with
cupboards and book-shelves; here and there she saw maps and
pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar from one of the shelves
as she passed; it was labelled `orange marmalade', but to her great
disappointment it was empty: she did not like to drop the jar for fear
of killing somebody, so managed to put it into one of the cupboards
as she fell past it.
O el pozo era muy profundo, o ella caía muy lentamente, porque tuvo tiempo
de sobra mientras caía, para mirar a su alrededor y preguntarse que sería lo
próximo que ocurriría. Primero, intentó mirar hacía abajo para averiguar
hacía dónde iba, pero estaba tan oscuro que no lograba ver nada; luego
miró las paredes del pozo, y se dio cuenta de que estaban llenas de

11. `Well!' thought Alice to herself, `after such a fall as this, I shall
think nothing of tumbling down stairs! How brave they'll all
think me at home! Why, I wouldn't say anything about it, even if
I fell off the top of the house!' (Which was very likely true.)
- ¡Vaya!- pensó Alicia -después de una caída como esta, caerme por las
escaleras no me parecerá nada. ¡Que valiente van a pensar que soy en
casa! ¡No me quejaría aunque me cayera del tejado de la casa!- cosa

12. Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end! `I wonder how
many miles I've fallen by this time?' she said aloud. `I must be getting
somewhere near the centre of the earth. Let me see: that would be
four thousand miles down , I think--' (for, you see, Alice had learnt
several things of this sort in her lessons in the schoolroom, and
though this was not a very good opportunity for showing off her
knowledge, as there was no one to listen to her, still it was good
practice to say it over) `--yes, that's about the right distance--but then
I wonder what Latitude or Longitude I've got to?' (Alice had no idea
what Latitude was, or Longitude either, but thought they were nice
grand words to say.)
Seguía cayendo, cayendo, cayendo. ¡Sería que la caída nunca llegaría a su
fin!
- Me pregunto cuantas millas habré caído ya.- dijo en voz alta- Debo estar en
algún lugar cerca del centro de la Tierra. Veamos: estará a unas cuatro mil
millas, creo...-como veis, Alicia había aprendido varías cosas de ese tipo en
el colegio, y a pesar de que no era muy buena ocasión para demostrar su
conocimiento, pues no había nadie que la escuchara, aún así era una
buena práctica repetirlo- .... sí, esa es la distancia correcta... pero entonces
me pregunto a qué Latitud y Longitud debo estar.- Alicia no tenía ni idea de
lo que era la Latitud o la Longitud, pero pensó que eran palabras
importantes para decir en ese momento.

13. Presently she began again. `I wonder if I shall fall right through the earth!
How funny it'll seem to come out among the people that walk with
their heads downward! The Antipathies, I think--' (she was rather glad
there was no one listening, this time, as it didn't sound at all the right
word) `--but I shall have to ask them what the name of the country is,
you know. Please, Ma' am, is this New Zealand or Australia?' (and she
tried to curtsey as she spoke-- fancy curtseying as you're falling
through the air! Do you think you could manage it?) `And what an
ignorant little girl she'll think me for asking! No, it'll never do to ask:
perhaps I shall see it written up somewhere.'
Pronto empezó de nuevo:
- Me pregunto si atravesaré de la tierra. ¡Qué divertido sería aparecer entre la
gente que anda cabeza abajo! Los Antipáticos, creo....- ahora se alegró
bastante de que no hubiera nadie escuchando, esta vez, no le sonaba del
todo bien lo que había dicho-...pero tendré que preguntarles cuál es el
nombre del país. Por favor, señora, ¿es esto Nueva Zelanda o Australia?- y
trató de hacer una reverencia mientras lo decía....¡imaginaos haciendo una
reverencia mientras caía por los aires! ¿Podríais hacerlo vosotras? -¡Qué
niña más ignorante pensaría que soy por preguntárselo. No, será mejor que

14. Down, down, down. There was nothing else to do, so Alice soon began
talking again. `Dinah'll miss me very much to-night, I should think!'
(Dinah was the cat.) `I hope they'll remember her saucer of milk at tea-
time. Dinah my dear! I wish you were down here with me! There are no
mice in the air, I'm afraid, but you might catch a bat, and that's very like
a mouse, you know. But do cats eat bats, I wonder?' And here Alice
began to get rather sleepy, and went on saying to herself, in a dreamy
sort of way, `Do cats eat bats? Do cats eat bats?' and sometimes, `Do
bats eat cats?'
Y seguía cayendo, cayendo y cayendo. No había nada más que hacer, así que
Alicia enseguida comenzó a hablar otra vez:
- ¡Creo que Dinnah me echará mucho de menos esta noche!- Dinnha era el
gato- Espero que se acuerden de darle su platito de leche a la hora del té.

Me temo que que no hay ratones por aquí, pero podrías cazar un

sueños:

15. for, you see, as she couldn't answer either question, it didn't much
matter which way she put it. She felt that she was dozing off, and
had just begun to dream that she was walking hand in hand with
Dinah, and saying to her very earnestly, `Now, Dinah, tell me the
truth: did you ever eat a bat?' when suddenly, thump! thump!
down she came upon a heap of sticks and dry leaves, and the fall
was over.
Veréis que como no podía contestar a ninguna de las dos preguntas, no
importaba mucho de que forma las hiciera. Notó que se estaba quedando
dormida, y justo empezó a soñar que estaba paseando de la mano de
Dinnah y que le decía muy seriamente:
- Ahora Dinnah, dime la verdad ¿alguna vez te has comido un murciélago?
Cuando de repente ¡pum!, cayó sobre un montón de ramas y hojas secas. La
caída había terminado.

16. Alice was not a bit hurt, and she jumped up on to her feet in a moment:
she looked up, but it was all dark overhead; before her was another
long passage, and the White Rabbit was still in sight, hurrying down
it. There was not a moment to be lost: away went Alice like the wind,
and was just in time to hear it say, as it turned a corner, `Oh my ears
and whiskers, how late it's getting!' She was close behind it when she
turned the corner, but the Rabbit was no longer to be seen: she found
herself in a long, low hall, which was lit up by a row of lamps hanging
from the roof.
Alicia no se había hecho ni un rasguño, y al momento se puso de pie de un
salto. Miró hacia arriba, pero todo estaba oscuro sobre su cabeza. Ante ella
vio otro largo pasadizo, y el conejo Blanco que todavía estaba a la vista, se
alejaba apresuradamente por él. No había tiempo que perder, así que le
siguió tan rápido como el viento. Llegó a tiempo para oírle decir, mientras
giraba la esquina :

Ya estaba muy cerca, cuando al torcer una esquina no vio al Conejo por

17. There were doors all round the hall, but they were all locked; and when Alice
had been all the way down one side and up the other, trying every door,
she walked sadly down the middle, wondering how she was ever to get
out again.
Suddenly she came upon a little three-legged table, all made of solid glass;
there was nothing on it except a tiny golden key, and Alice's first thought
was that it might belong to one of the doors of the hall; but, alas! either
the locks were too large, or the key was too small, but at any rate it would
not open any of them. However, on the second time round, she came
upon a low curtain she had not noticed before, and behind it was a little
door about fifteen inches high: she tried the little golden key in the lock,
and to her great delight it fitted!
La sala entera estaba rodeada de puertas, pero estaban todas cerradas con llave y
cuando Alicia hubo ido de un lado a otro intentando abrir cada puerta, caminó
con tristeza al centro de la habitación preguntándose cómo se las arreglaría
para salir de nuevo.
De repente se topó con una mesita de tres patas, toda hecha de cristal macizo. No
había nada sobre ella, excepto una diminuta llave de oro. Lo primero que pensó
es que podría pertenecer a alguna de las puertas de la sala, pero ¡ay! o las
cerraduras eran muy grandes, o la llave demasiado pequeña, el caso es que no
abría ninguna de ellas. Sin embargo, al dar una segunda vuelta, encontró una
cortina baja que no había notado antes y tras la que había una pequeña puerta
de unas quince pulgadas de altura. Así que probó la pequeña llave de oro en la
cerradura, y para su alegría encajó.

18. Alice opened the door and found that it led into a small passage, not
much larger than a rat-hole: she knelt down and looked along the
passage into the loveliest garden you ever saw. How she longed to
get out of that dark hall, and wander about among those beds of
bright flowers and those cool fountains, but she could not even get
her head though the doorway; `and even if my head would go
through,' thought poor Alice, `it would be of very little use without my
shoulders. Oh, how I wish I could shut up like a telescope! I think I
could, if I only know how to begin.' For, you see, so many out-of-the-
way things had happened lately, that Alice had begun to think that
very few things indeed were really impossible.
Alicia Abrió la puerta y vio que conducía a un pequeño pasillo, no mucho más
grande que una ratonera. Se arrodilló, miró por él y vio el jardín más
maravilloso que jamás hayáis visto. ¡Qué ganas tenía de salir de esa oscura
sala y pasear entre aquellos prados de vivos colores y aquellas frescas
fuentes! Pero no podía ni meter la cabeza por la entrada.
-Y aunque mi cabeza entrara, - pensó la pobre Alicia- me sería de muy poca
utilidad sin mis hombros. ¡Cómo me gustaría poder plegarme como un
telescopio! Creo que podría si por lo menos supiera como empezar.
Pues, como veis le habían ocurrido tantas cosas fuera de lo normal
últimamente, que Alicia había empezado a pensar que había muy pocas
cosas realmente imposibles.
