2. INTRODUCCIÓN
El Día de Muertos es una tradición muy especial en México, la cual consiste en
montar altares u ofrendas en memoria de las personas que ya murieron.
La celebración del Día de Muertos es producto de la mezcla de culturas, pues
retoma el culto a la muerte de los indígenas y el catolicismo impuesto durante la
época colonial en México.

3. Los altares u ofrendas de muertos son los elementos
más importantes de esta celebración.
El 1 y 2 de noviembre se coloca un altar en honor a las
almas de los difuntos que nos visitan en esas fechas. Se
cree que el 1 de noviembre (Todos Santos) nos visitan
las almas de los niños y el 2 de noviembre (Fieles
Difuntos) llegan los adultos.
¿Cómo se celebra el Día de Muertos en
México?

4. Tipos de ofrendas
Existen diferentes tipos de ofrendas. Un altar de muertos
puede tener varios niveles o escalones.
El altar más tradicional es el de 7 niveles, los cuales
simbolizan los pasos necesarios para descansar en paz. Pero
también hay altares de dos o tres niveles.
El altar de 3 niveles simboliza el cielo, la tierra y el
purgatorio; mientras que el de dos escalones simboliza el
cielo y la tierra.

5. Significado de los 7
niveles
Nivel 1. Se coloca la imagen del santo del que se sea devoto.
Nivel 2. Este nivel está dedicado a las ánimas del purgatorio y sirve para que el
difunto tenga permiso para salir de ese lugar. Se recomienda colocar una imagen de
las ánimas del purgatorio en este nivel.
Nivel 3. Se coloca sal en este escalón para purificar el espíritu y para que no se
corrompa el cuerpo.
Nivel 4. En este nivel va el Pan de Muerto, que simboliza la eucaristía.
Nivel 5. En este escalón se coloca la comida y fruta favorita del difunto.
Nivel 6. Aquí va la foto del difunto al que se le dedica el altar.
Nivel 7. Se coloca una cruz formada con semillas, frutas, cal. Sirve para el difunto
expíe sus culpas.
Éste es el significado de cada uno de los escalones de la ofrenda
de Día de Muertos:

6. Calaveritas
Principalmente de azúcar, aunque también hay de
chocolate, cartonería, barro, cerámica. Representan los
cráneos humanos que se ofrendaban a los Dioses.
Las calaveras chicas son dedicadas a la Santísima
Trinidad y la grande al Padre Eterno.
Sal
Es un elemento purificador para que el cuerpo no se
corrompa en el viaje de los difuntos. En algunos
altares se coloca una cruz de sal.

7. Copal
Significa la oración o alabanza. Se usa para ahuyentar
los malos espíritus y así el alma pueda entrar a su
casa sin ningún peligro.
Flores
Significan la festividad. Sus colores y aromas celebran
la estancia de nuestros difuntos y los ayudan a irse
con alegría.
