as páginas de este número se honran con
la presencia en ellas de cuatro distingui-
dos pilares del ámbito de la ciencia, la me-
dicina y la salud: el Instituto Finlay de Vacu-
nas (IFV), el Centro de Ingeniería Genética y
Biotecnología (CIGB), el Instituto Pedro Kourí
(IPK) y la Brigada Internacional Henry Reeve.
Precisamente,elloshansidoobjetoenlosúlti-
mostiempos–ydeformareiterada–deunaaten-
ción notable: el IFV y el CIGB, por su creación de
cuatro candidatos vacunales contra la COVID-19;
el IPK, por el recibimiento internacional del Pre-
mio a la Excelencia en Salud Pública; y la Henry
Reeve, por su nominación al Premio Nobel de la
Paz del año 2021. Todo ello ha estado vinculado
asudestacadaparticipaciónenlaluchacontrala
COVID-19.
No es casualidad que recientemente el perso-
nal de estos cuatro pilares haya sido condecora-
do por la central sindical cubana con la Medalla
deHazañaLaboral.
Y no son estas las únicas instituciones cuba-
nas con meritorios resultados en este campo. En
esta misma edición se presentan el Centro Inter-
nacional de Salud La Pradera y la Clínica Interna-
cional Camilo Cienfuegos, ambas dedicadas a la
prestación y exportación de servicios de salud.
También en este campo se distingue la Clínica Si-
boney,quecumpliórecientementecincoañosde
fundada.
El recuerdo del aniversario 60 del estableci-
miento de relaciones diplomáticas con siete paí-
ses asiáticos, representa también un homenaje
a la política de apertura al mundo del Gobierno
revolucionario desde aquellos años fundadores,
locual,asuvez,repercutiótambiénenlaamplia-
cióndelescenarioparalasrelacionescomerciales
yeconómicas.
Dos encartes que acompañan este número
ejemplifican el despliegue de relaciones multifa-
céticascondospaísesasiáticosamigos:Vietnam
ylaIndia.
La Cámara de Comercio de la República de
Cuba desea mucha salud y bienestar profesio-

has been linked to their outstanding participation

It is not by chance that, recently, the staff of
these four pillars was decorated by the Cuban
trade unions organization with the Medal of
Labor Achievement.
And these are not the only Cuban institutions
with meritorious results in this field. La Pradera
International Health Center and the Camilo
Cienfuegos International Clinic, both dedicated
totheprovisionandexportofhealthservices,are
likewisepresentedinthisedition.AlsotheSiboney
Clinic,whichrecentlycelebrateditsfifthanniversary,
standsoutinthisfield.
The memory of the 60th anniversary of the
establishment ofdiplomaticrelationswithseven
Asian countries also represents a tribute to the
revolutionary government’s policy of opening up
to the world since those founding years, which,
in turn, also had repercussions on the expansion
of the scenario for commercial and economic
relations.
Twoinsertsthataccompanythisissueexemplify
the deployment of multifaceted relations with
twofriendAsiancountries:VietnamandIndia.
The Chamber of Commerce of the Republic
of Cuba wishes its members and the readers
of Cuba Foreign Trade in general, much health

uatro candidatos vacunales contra la COVID-19
habían sido dados a conocer por institu-
ciones de Cuba al redactar estas líneas, a
comienzos de noviembre de 2020.
Asabiendasdequelaurgenciadelproblema
y la voluntad de los científicos hará obsoleto
rápidamente cualquier relato, Cuba Foreign
Trade se aventura a presentar este breve re-
sumen como una instantánea de un momento
crucial de la lucha contra la terrible pandemia.

our vaccination candidates against
covid-19 had been made known by Cuban
institutions when writing these lines in
early November 2020.
Knowing that the urgency of the problem
andthewillofthescientistswillquicklyrender
any account obsolete, Cuba Foreign Trade
ventures to present this brief summary as
a snapshot of a crucial moment in the fight
against the terrible COVID-19 pandemic.

Los dos primeros candidatos fueron obteni-
dos por el Instituto Finlay de Vacunas (IFV).
En ambos, la proteína viral –que constituye el
antígeno vacunal– es la misma molécula. Hay
un proceso común para ambas vacunas que es
la obtención del antígeno viral, y la diferencia
viene en lo que se hace después.

The first two candidates were created by
the Finlay Institute of Vaccines (IFV). In both
of them, the viral protein, which constitutes
the vaccine antigen, is the same molecule. There
is a common process for both vaccines that is
the obtaining of the viral antigen, and the
difference comes in what is done afterwards.
El 28 de julio fue probado por primera vez en
humanos el primer candidato vacunal de Améri-
ca Latina y el Caribe contra la COVID-19, lo que
constituyó un importante logro de la ciencia cu-
bana.
A fines de agosto comenzó el ensayo clínico
del primer candidato vacunal cubano contra el
nuevocoronavirus,bautizadocomoSoberana01.
El nombre de la vacuna refleja el objetivo de
alcanzar la soberanía tecnológica frente a la
COVID-19enCuba,elsentimientodepatriotismoy
también el compromiso con conceptos que da-
tandelafundacióndelInstitutoporelentonces
presidentedelosConsejosdeEstadoydeMinis-
tros, Fidel Castro.
On July 28th, the first vaccinal candidate of
Latin America and the Caribbean against
COVID-19 was tested for the first time in
humans, which constituted an important
achievement of Cuban science.
At the end of August, the clinical trial of the
first Cuban vaccine candidate against the new
coronavirus, known as Soberana 01, started.
Thenameofthevaccinereflectstheobjective
of achieving technological sovereignty against
COVID-19 in Cuba, the feeling of patriotism
and also the commitment with concepts that
date from the foundation of the Institute by
the then president of the State and Ministers’
Councils, Fidel Castro.

El doctor Vicente Vérez, di-
rectorgeneraldelInstitutoFin-
lay de Vacunas, ha comentado
que el reto de Soberana 01 es
lograr inducir un alto nivel de
anticuerpos en el organismo.
Añadió que esta vacuna, así
comolaSoberana02–elsegun-
docandidatovacunal–,utilizan
el mismo antígeno, producido
por una célula conocida como
CHO. «Dicho antígeno se ob-
tiene mediante producción
biotecnológica convencional
en el Centro de Inmunología
Molecular».
Significó que de lo que se trata es de utili-
zar el antígeno –que es la llave– producido por
biotecnología, y lograr producir anticuerpos
que tengan la capacidad de impedir que el vi-
rus penetre en la célula humana.
La seguridad de esta vacuna, dijo, es muy
alta, no hay efecto adverso importante, y este
es un resultado de las cinco fórmulas puestas
en más de 100 personas.
No obstante, manifestó, se necesitan tener
los resultados de la segunda dosis, para deci-
dir cuál de estas cinco formulaciones es la que
induce a una mejor respuesta inmune, antes
de pasar a una segunda fase. «En este cami-
no transitamos en los meses de noviembre y
diciembre, para posteriormente pasar a una
fase 2».
Doctor Vicente Vérez, general
director of the Finlay Institute for
Vaccines, has commented that
the challenge of Soberana 01 is to
succeed in inducing a high level of
antibodies in the organism.
He added that both Soberanas,
the 01 and the 02, use the same
antigen, produced by a cell
known as CHO. “Said antigen is
obtained through conventional
biotechnological production at
theCenterofMolecularImmunology.”
He said the question is to use
the antigen – the key – produced
by biotechnology, and succeed in producing
antibodieswiththecapacitytopreventthevirus
from penetrating the human cell.
This vaccine, he stated, is very safe; there are
no relevant adverse effects and that is a result
of the five formulas applied to more than 100
people.
Nevertheless, he aded, it is necessary to have
the results of the second dosis in order to decide
which one of these five formulations best
induces to a better immune answer before
goingovertoasecondphase.“Wewillbededicating
our efforts to this purpose in November and
December, and then go over to a Phase 2.”
La ciencia cubana marcó otro hito en el en-
frentamiento a la COVID-19 cuando un segundo
candidato,nombradoSoberana02,recibiólaau-
torización del Centro para el Control Estatal de
Medicamentos, Equipos y Dispositivos Médicos
(CECMED), a fin de comenzar la fase de evalua-
ción clínica.

Cuban science marked another milestone in
the struggle against COVID-19 when a second
candidateagainstthedisease,namedSoberana02,
received the authorization from the Center for
the State Control of Medicines, Equipment
and Medical Devices (CECMED) to start the
phase of clinical evaluation.

El Dr. Vérez ha indicado que Soberana 02 es
una vacuna conjugada, en la cual el antígeno del
virus,eldominiodeuniónalreceptor(RBD),está
enlazado químicamente al toxoide tetánico.
Setratadeunavacunainnovadoraquenotie-
ne precedentes entre todas las que se desarro-
llan para enfrentar a la COVID-19 en el mundo.
Tanto Soberana 01 como Soberana 02, son va-
cunas moleculares o vacunas de subunidades.
Ante la pregunta de por qué dos vacunas, el
doctor Vérez precisó que, teniendo en cuenta
que el objetivo es lograr la respuesta inmune
adecuada, «el camino es diversificar las alterna-
tivas para poder vencer ese reto de manera efi-
ciente y clara».
En los ensayos clínicos se espera, en primer
lugar, demostrar que son vacunas seguras, ba-
sadasenlosantecedentesdeseguridaddeotras
vacunas conjugadas previamente utilizadas,
además de lograr una respuesta inmune protec-
tora potente y duradera en el tiempo.
Juntoaloanterior,seesperaquelainmunidad
alcance la mucosa del tracto respiratorio para
evitar la entrada del virus, y Soberana 02 será el
candidato que se propondrá aplicar en la pobla-
ción pediátrica.
Estos logros son fruto de la colaboración en-
tre el Instituto Finlay de Vacunas, el Centro de
Inmunología Molecular y el Laboratorio de Sín-
tesis Química y Biomolecular de la Universidad
de La Habana.
PhD Vicente Vérez has stated that Soberana
02 is an innovative vaccine with no precedent
among all those being developed in the world
to face COVID-19.
Its novelty consists in being a conjugated
vaccine, in which the virus antigen, the receptor
binding domain (RBD), is chemically linked to
the tetanus toxoid.
Both Soberana 1 and Soberana 2 are molecular
sub-unit vaccines.
In answer to why two vaccines, Doctor Vérez
specified that, taking into consideration that
the objective is to achieve the adequate immune
response,“theroadistodiversifythealternatives
in order to defeat that challenge in an efficient
and clear manner.”
In the clinical trials, it is expected, first of
all, to demonstrate that they are safe vaccines,
based on the safety background of other
previously used conjugated vaccines, besides
achievingapowerfulandlong-lastingprotective
immune response.
Along with the above, it is expected that im-
munity will reach the mucosa of the respiratory
tract to prevent the entry of the virus, and So-
berana 02 will be the candidate to be applied
to the pediatric population.
These achievements are the result of the
collaborationbetweentheFinlayInstituteofVaccines,
the Center of Molecular Immunology and the
LaboratoryofChemicalandBiomolecularSynthesisof
theUniversityofHavana.

En febrero de 1804, el doctor Tomás Romay Chacón inició la vacunación
contralaviruelaenCuba.Ladifusiónportodoelmundodelavacunaantiva-
riólicaesconsideradaelprimergranéxitodelamedicinamodernaenlacura
o prevención de una enfermedad.
In February 1804, Dr. Tomás Romay Chacón started the vaccination
against smallpox in Cuba. The diffusion of the anti-varicolous vaccine
throughout the world is considered the first great success of modern
medicine in the cure or prevention of a disease.
El 14 de agosto de 1883 el sabio cubano Dr. Carlos J. Finlay expuso ante
la Real Academia de Ciencias Médicas, Físicas y Naturales de La Habana su
magistral hipótesis de que el agente transmisor de la fiebre amarilla debía
ser un mosquito, y que probablemente se tratara del hoy conocido como
Aedes aegypti.
On August 14, 1883, the Cuban scholar Dr. Carlos J. Finlay presented
before the Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of
Havana his masterly hypothesis that the transmitting agent of yellow
fever must have been a mosquito, and that it was probably the one
known today as Aedes aegypti.

ción con más de 30 años de experiencia en el de-
sarrollodevacunas.Eslíderenelusodeplatafor-
masdevesículasdemembranaexterna(VME).
The Finlay Vaccine Institute is an institution
with over 30 years of experience in vaccine
development. It is a leader in the use of external
membrane vesicle (EMV) platforms.
Los resultados de los estudios estarán listos
para enero próximo y los científicos realizan un
gran esfuerzo para comenzar a vacunar a la po-
blación en el primer semestre de 2021. Ratificó
elcompromisodeque, enelprimersemestredel
próximo año, una parte importante de la pobla-
cióncubanaestarávacunadacontralaCOVID-19.
Entretanto ya la Organización Mundial de la
Salud (OMS) incluyó al segundo candidato va-
cunal cubano, Soberana 02, en su sitio oficial de
proyectos en fases de ensayos clínicos contra la
COVID-19. Así, Soberana 01 y Soberana 02 for-
man parte de los 47 candidatos contra el SARS-
COV-2, registrados a nivel mundial por dicha or-
ganización.
The results of the studies will be ready next
January and the scientists are making a great
effort to start vaccinating the population in
the first semester of 2021. He ratified the
commitment that in the first semester of next
year an important part of the Cuban population
will be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization
(WHO) already included the second Cuban vaccine
candidate Soberana 02 in its official site of
projects in phases of clinical trials against

noventa del siglo XX, un momento relevante en

The scientists at IFV are the creators of a
vaccine against the meningococcus of Group B
(Vamengoc-B) that marked in the mid 1990’s a
relevantmomentinthedevelopmentofbiosciencesin
Cuba.AtthattimeitsleaderswereDr.Concepción
Campa (Conchita) and Dr. Gustavo Sierra.

El Dr. Eduardo Martínez, presidente de BioCu-

On December 8, 1937, the Institute of Tropical
Medicine was inaugurated in the Domingo Cuba
Pavilion of the Calixto García Hospital, directed
by Dr. Pedro Kourí Esmeja (1900-1964), who
enjoyedgreatprestigeachievedinhisParasitology
Chair at the University of Havana.
In addition, Dr. Kourí organized laboratories,

This year the Contingent celebrates its 15th
anniversary in midst of a world pandemic,
which has meant a confrontation against the
COVID-19 in countries of all continents.

Likewise, in 2010, Cuban doctors faced the
cholera epidemic in Haiti, where they provided
healthservicestomorethan400,000peopleand

of the first countries in the world to respond to
the call of the World Health Organization and
the United Nations to face the Ebola epidemic in
Africa in October 2014. In less than two weeks,

On August 13, 2020, the National Congress of
Hondurasapprovedthegrantingofthehighdeco-
ration “Commander’s Cross” to the “Henry Reeve”
Contingent for its outstanding contribution
to the health of the Honduran people and the
results achieved in that country in the fight

Ante la calificación de la COVID-19 como
pandemia, mayor peligro sanitario al que se ha
enfrentado el mundo en el siglo XXI, el Contin-
gente Henry Reeve se preparó para asistir a los
pueblos que lo solicitaran. En el lapso de cinco
meses, su presencia ha llegado a 39 estados.
Ha atendido a más de 550 900 personas y salva-
do más de 12 488 vidas. Han participado más de
3 800 profesionales cubanos de la salud, de los
cuales el 61,2 % son mujeres. De las 52 brigadas
constituidas para el enfrentamiento de la pan-
demia, 43 se mantienen prestando servicios de
salud en 33 naciones.

En este periodo, se han agrupado en 71 briga-
das médicas, de ellas 46 destinadas al enfren-
tamiento a la COVID-19, tres ante la epidemia
del ébola, dos para combatir la epidemia del
cólera y 20 ante la ocurrencia de desastres na-
turales (ocho especializadas en inundaciones,
siete en terremotos y cinco en huracanes).
El Contingente se ha mantenido activo en
su labor. Ha desarrollado de una a cuatro mi-
siones por año. Se destaca en estos últimos
cinco meses su accionar eficaz en el enfrenta-
miento a la pandemia de la COVID-19.

Contingent has been part of international efforts
to increase cooperation in health matters
between nations. Along this period, they
have been grouped into 71 medical brigades,
of which 46 were assigned to confront the

En su más de un cuarto de siglo de servicios, la
instituciónhaatendido,entreexternosenrégimen
ambulatorio y hospitalizados, a cerca de 100 000
pacientes procedentes de más de 110 países, de los
cualeselmayorporcentajecorrespondeapacientes
conretinosispigmentaria.
Este año se decidió ampliar el cuerpo de guardia
incorporándoleunasalacondoscamasdeobserva-
ciónyunaconsultaespecializadaparaatenderafec-
ciones respiratorias y otros síntomas sospechosos.
Esto último confirma su importancia dado el desa-
rrollodelaCOVID-19,unavezqueestasreformasen
el área permitan dar respuesta a la situación epide-
miológicaactual.

l pasado mes de junio falleció el Doc-
tor en Ciencias Médicas Rafael Pérez
Cristiá, quien fuera durante más de
20 años y hasta el momento de su falleci-
miento reconocido y respetado director
del Centro para el Control Estatal de
Medicamentos, Equipos y Dispositivos
Médicos (CECMED).
El pasado año, Cuba Foreign Trade pu-
blicó un artículo dedicado a la conmemo-
ración de los 30 años de la fundación del
CECMED. Como se conoce, este centro
científico ha jugado un papel determi-
nante en la lucha contra la pandemia de
la COVID-19.

of the Permanent Court of Scientific

gía, este distinguido profesional tuvo
una destacada actividad científica y do-
cente en la organización y creación de la
especialidad de Toxicología Clínica y del
Centro Nacional de Toxicología (CENA-
TOX) de Cuba. También fue Presidente
Fundador de la Sociedad Cubana de To-
xicología.
Participó en el diseño para la conduc-
ción de ensayos clínicos, en el desarrollo
de la vigilancia sanitaria de medicamen-
tos y productos para el diagnóstico in
vitro. También intervino en el desarrollo
de la Reglamentación Farmacéutica en
Cuba, en Centroamérica y el Caribe.
El aporte de sus conocimientos al for-
talecimiento de la política reguladora
de medicamentos en Cuba contribuyó
a la categorización del CECMED como
Autoridad Nacional Reguladora de Me-
dicamentos de Referencia de la Organi-
zación Panamericana de la Salud (OPS)
para Las Américas y Autoridad Nacional
Reguladora de Vacunas certificada por
la OMS.
Fue Titular de la Universidad Médi-
ca de La Habana, Investigador Titular
y Académico Titular de la Academia de
Ciencias de Cuba, asesor para la crea-
ción del Centro de Toxicología de la Uni-
versidad de Carabobo (CITUC), Venezue-

process of strategic redefinition of the
concepts of Cuba’s international policy

Revolution that included, notably, a substantial

Thus, in 1960, diplomatic relations were
established with seven Asian countries which,

from the first meetings held by the leaders

Previously, in the first months of the
revolutionary triumph in 1959, high-level con-
tacts hadtakenplace,startingwiththevisittoIndia
ofadelegationheadedbyCommanderErnesto“Che”
Guevarathattouredseveralcitiesinthecountryto

Since the triumph of the Revolution, India
has been a bulwark in the struggle of the Cuban

administrations against Cuba, which still persists
and continues to intensify.
Cuba, in turn, has supported this fraternal
country in its fight against terrorism, which is
one of the most pressing threats to India, of
which our small island has also been a victim.
In the international arena, both countries
have supported each other as close friends in
the work of multilateral relations and within
the structures and organizations of the UN
and the NAM.
The visit of the Honorable President of the
Republic of India, Mr. Ram Nath Kovind to
Cuba in June 2018, the first visit of an Indian
Head of State to our country, was a milestone
inthehistoryofrelationsbetweenthetwonations.
This event contributed to the strengthening of
relationsatstate,governmentandvillagelevels.
Previously, in February 2015, the current
President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel,
then First Vice President of the Councils of
State and Ministers, had visited Delhi and was
received by the highest authorities of India.

Yaseencuentracasiconcluidaunaplantadefertili-
zantesenlaprovinciadeCienfuegos,primerproyecto
de esta cooperación, mientras avanzan en su imple-
mentaciónotrosprogramas.
Las visitas a la India de los ministros de Salud Pú-
blicaydeEnergíayMinas,asícomodelviceministro
primero del Ministerio de Comunicaciones, han im-
pulsadoelavancedelacooperaciónenestasesferas,
locualhapermitidolafirmadeacuerdosquepueden
complementarnuestraseconomías.
Porotraparte,enelcontextodelaaparicióndela
pandemiadelcoronavirus,ambasnacioneshanmani-
festadoelinterésdetrabajardeconjuntoenelenfren-
tamiento a esta enfermedad. En este sentido, cabe
destacar las donaciones recibidas en nuestro país
provenientes de la India, con medicamentos y otros
insumosparacombatirlaCOVID-19.
Porsuparte,enelfrentedelacooperación,laciencia
cubanahahechosumodestoaportealenfrentamien-
todelapandemiaenlaIndia.Porsolocitarunejemplo,
el fármaco cubano Itolizumab, dedicado a reducir la
mortalidaddeloscasosafectadosporlaCOVID-19en
Cuba,estásiendosometidoapruebasclínicasporins-
titucionesindiasparasuposterioraplicación.
Enotroordendecosas,Cubaesmiembrofundador
de la Alianza Solar Internacional, programa lanzado
porlosgobiernosdeFranciaylaIndia,quetienecomo
objetivoabordar,colectivamente,losdesafíoscomu-
nes con el fin de encaminar nuestras voluntades en
elenfrentamientoalosefectosdelcambioclimático.
LaspequeñasislascomoCubasufrenyasuprogresivo
ydevastadorefecto.
En el marco de la Alianza Solar Internacional y
comoresultadodelavisitaaCubadelpresidentedela
India,seanuncióelotorgamientodeuncréditopara
la instalación de un parque solar fotovoltaico de 75
MW,queseconviertaenunamuestraelocuentedela
voluntaddeambospaísesenesteestratégicocampo.
Asimismo,elcomerciobilateralsehavistoestimu-
ladoporlaparticipaciónderepresentantesdeempre-
sas indias en las recientes ediciones de las ferias de
turismo,artesaníaycomercialesquesehandesarro-
lladoenCubaenlosúltimosaños.Enestesentido,se
destacalaparticipacióndelentoncesministrodeCo-
mercioeIndustria,SureshPrabhu,enFihav2017.
No debe dejar de mencionarse el Programa de
AdiestramientoTécnicoInternacional(ITEC),median-
te el cual alrededor de 600 profesionales y técnicos
cubanoshanrecibidocursosdepreparaciónenlaIndia.
Over the past few years, the Indian government
has granted Cuba significant credits for projects in
sectorssuchasrenewableenergy,thebiotechnology
industry and the production of medicines, natural
and traditional medicine and agriculture, among
others.
A fertilizer plant in the province of Cienfuegos,
the first project of this cooperation, is almost
completed, while other programs are progressing
intheirimplementation.
The visits to India by the Ministers of Public
Health and of Energy and Mines, as well as the
First Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Commu-
nications, have boosted the progress of cooperation
in these areas, which has led to the signing of
agreementsthatcancomplementoureconomies.
Moreover, in the context of the emergence of
the coronavirus pandemic, both nations have
expressed interest in working together to confront
this disease. In this regard, it is worth noting the
donations received in our country from India,
with medicines and other materials to combat
COVID-19.
Ontheotherhand,inthecooperationfront,Cuban
science has made its modest contribution to the
confrontationofthepandemicinIndia.Tociteonly
oneexample,theCubandrugItolizumab,dedicated
to reducing the mortality of cases affected by
COVID-19inCuba,isbeingsubjectedtoclinicaltests
byIndianinstitutionsforitslaterapplication.
On another note, Cuba is a founding member
of the International Solar Alliance, a program
launched by the governments of France and India,
which aims to collectively address common
challengesinordertodirectourwillsinconfronting
the effects of climate change. Small islands like
Cuba are already suffering its progressive and
devastating effect.
WithintheframeworkoftheInternationalSolar
Alliance and as a result of the visit to Cuba by the
President of India, the granting of a credit for the
installation of a 75 MW solar photovoltaic park
was announced, which will become an eloquent
signofthewillofbothcountriesinthisstrategicfield.
Likewise,thebilateraltradehasbeenstimulated
by the participation of representatives of Indian
companies in the recent editions of the tourism,
handicraft and commercial fairs that have been
held in Cuba in the last few years. In this sense
stands out the participation of the then Minister of
CommerceandIndustrySureshPrabhuinFihav2017.
TheInternationalTechnicalTrainingProgram(ITEC),
through which about 600 Cuban professionals and
technicians have received preparation courses in
India,shouldnotbeomitted.

n 2020 Indonesia y Cuba cumplen 60 años
de amistad ininterrumpida. Todo comenzó
en1959,cuandoelcomandanteErnestoChe
Guevara arribó a Jakarta en calidad de enviado es-
pecialdelprimerministrodelaRepúblicadeCuba.
Al concluir su estancia, se realizó el anuncio: Indo-
nesiayCubaestableceríanrelacionesdiplomáticas.
El 22 de enero de 1960 marca la fecha de oficia-
lización de los vínculos entre los dos estados. Cua-
tromesesmástarde,AchmedSukarno,presidente
fundador de la Repú-
blica de Indonesia,
realizó su histórica vi-
sita a Cuba. Fue el pri-
mer jefe de Estado en
visitar la isla caribeña
luegodeltriunfodela
Revolución. Allí tuvo
amplios intercambios
con el Comandante
en Jefe Fidel Castro.

del Gobierno de Indonesia en rechazo al bloqueo
económico, comercial y financiero impuesto por
losEstadosUnidoscontralaIslayelacostumbrado

he year 2020 marks 60 years of continued
friendship between Indonesia and Cuba.
It all started in 1959, when Commander
Ernesto “Che” Guevara arrived in Jakarta as
special envoy of Cuba’s prime minister. At the end
ofhisvisit,anannouncementwasmade:Indonesia
andCubawouldestablishdiplomaticrelations.
On Jan. 22, 1960, the two states officially opened
diplomatic relations. Four months later, Indonesia’s
founding father Achmed Sukarno paid a historic
visit to Cuba. He
was the first head
of State to visit the
Caribbeanislandafter
the triumph of the
Revolution. During
his visit, President
Sukarno had extensive
exchanges with
Commander-in-chief
Fidel Castro. Mutual
sympathy between
the two leaders was
visible.
Since then and
up to this day, both
countries have
maintained a solid
cooperation based
on the harmonizing in issues of the international
agenda. Cuba recognizes the role of Indonesia
as precursor oftheNon-AlignedMovement(NAM),
which our country has had the privilege of presiding
pro tempore on two occasions. Cuba also
acknowledges thefirmpositionoftheIndonesian
governmentinrejectionoftheeconomic,commercialand
financial blockade imposed by the United States
