Let me start with the fact I will use the Cuban Lucumi spelling of ashe
throughout this lecture, but the concept is the same for the Yoruba spelling of ase,
the Brazilian or Portuguese spelling of axe, or the alternate Spanish and English
spellings of “ache”.
Ashe is always and 100% positive energy, there are no exceptions to this. Ju ju is
the polar opposite of ashe and it is not to be confused with ashe, Ju ju sometimes
spelled juju is also complex in its simplicity and almost always Ju ju is a function of
human to human influences; whereas ashe affects both humans and all of nature. If
we study the polar opposites of Ire and Osogbo in the Yoruba culture, we will find
ashe as the root of all Ire and Ju ju squarely inside Osogbo. In fact why good
defeats evil or light pierces darkness is because of ashe tipping the perfect balance.
This is one reason why the Orisha Esu or Eshu is often incorrectly associated with
the devil. Of course there is no devil in the Yoruba system, nor is there a Hell. The
logic in this is the same as it is in most Eastern philosophies, that the soul (ori)
get’s judged after it expires its host or body, in the Lucumi system this is Olorun
who is the only judge. Therefore society can judge the physical while only Olorun
judges the spiritual. If we are judged well, we return on the same or a greater
plane of existence. If we are found lacking or abusive our soul suffers the
consequences in the next or after life.
Ori is really more than just one’s soul, the Lucumi call it “the divine spirit” and that
is a good place to start. The Lucumi believe that we have a physical presence, an
intellectual presence, and emotional presence and a spiritual presence. Each of
these grows or declines individually, yet each is important to ori and collectively
these components of ori function better when a balance of the four is achieved.
Some Eastern philosophies also suggest this balance is the door to enlightenment.
There are many speculations throughout different cultures as to how ashe affects
each of the four components and the collective. Are there different types of ashe,
for example temporary or permanent? This is a frequent topic for debate, does ashe
expire with the host body or does it continue with ori to Olorun and even beyond to
a subsequent host? My guess or opinion is that some ashe is permanent while other
is not.
Revisiting the four components and ashe and a few words on each, the physical is
affected by ashe for example when a healer heals us or through a discipline like
yoga, musical vibrations science tells us make the brain happy, as does dance or
laughter, clean air, pure water all affect the physical. Healers often use their gifts to
3. replace Juju with ashe, similar to how if we eat something rotten we have a
stomach pain, or how a broken bone mends. The intellectual component we are
addressing currently as you are reading this lecture. The brain inputs data that we
turn to information or discard, information may become knowledge and knowledge
is an important component of wisdom. In order to begin to understand ashe, we
must first recognize its existence, then we can study it, Ashe opens doors for us
intellectually and can increase our capacity to grow or learn. Emotionally ashe
provides us with calm, just as meditation or chanting contribute to our emotional
well being.
bienestar emocional.
The components that we are focusing on in this lecture are the spiritual, and forgive
me if I lightly danced over the other three components. To understand how ashe
affects the spiritual we need to again separate the spiritual components of the
Lucumi. These are The Dead, our individual ancestors, the Orishas and Ifa
divination. Most traditions outside of Lucumi recognize ancestor veneration,
veneration of the dead is rather simple, and it is any dead spirit who is not an
ancestor. All spirits have ashe as well and the wise are trained to recognize it and
petition for it. We often wrongly assume that ashe is only about nature and natural
things and our connection to them, but in fact it is more. The Lucumi also know
that our ancestors and our spiritual guides in the dead also protect us in the dream
world or astral planes from our enemies and the unknown there. They also advise
us in this realm. The more ashe we have earned or collected, the stronger and
more useful the connections of the dead and ancestors become.
The immortal Orishas are another purveyor of ashe, however as a rule they require
to be venerated or sacrificed to in order to share their ashe. We in Lucumi know
that most Orishas have a connection to an aspect or element of nature, such as
Oshun (osun in Nigeria) and rivers, Yemaya and Olokun and oceans, Obatala and
rain and snow, Aggayu and volcanoes, Chango or Shango with thunder, Oya’s
daughter Bronsia with the tornado, etcetera. These Orishas and others often are
mistakenly identified as their element when in fact they are not. We Lucumi view
them more as guardians of their respective elements who have the power to
manipulate the element at their will. Just as Eshu or Eleggua needs to be venerated
first to access any Orisha, the same is true of each element of nature, therefore if
you want to access the ashe of a shell that is alive or dead sitting in Yemaya’s
shallows in the ocean, you need to ask her permission first. Of course it helps if you
are her daughter, son or have received her through ceremony.
5. ceremonia.
We will finish this discussion in part 3 now that we have a bit of a foundation built.
base construida.
