Los motores paso a paso convierten impulsos eléctricos en movimientos angulares discretos, lo que les permite posicionarse con precisión. Ofrecen un control sencillo y son fiables, aunque su funcionamiento a bajas velocidades no es suave y tienden a sobrecalentarse a altas velocidades. Existen varios tipos como de imanes permanentes, reluctancia variable e híbridos, que se diferencian en la configuración del rotor y estator.
