2. John used to look at the Moon at
night. He loves her when she is
round and shiny, but also when she
looks like a banana. Sometimes the
Moon is dark and not with a good
face. John often wonders how she
arrived in the sky so high...
John also thinks that she is a little bit magical,… because she never
falls!
“I don’t know, perhaps she is stuck in the sky with some glue, or
maybe she is hanging with some transparent threads”

3. One night, before going to bed, when grandad was reading a
wonderful tale to John and to his youngest sister Eve, John
asked:
- Grandad, do you know how the Moon was born?

4. Grandad was really susprised. He
was not sure to be able to answer
such a difficult question!
“Dear John, grandad said, the Moon is the best friend of the Earth.
The Earth is the place where we live. It is a big and blue sphere
that, like the Moon, also lives in a place called the Universe. Both of
them, the Moon and the Earth, always go together, one near the
other”

5. - Ah, I see, Eve said,… therefore,… have
they always been close friends?, like
Sarah and I?
-No, dear Eve. The Earth was born
many,many years ago, and while the
Earth was living leisurely in the Universe,
the Moon was still not born.
One day, when the Earth was walking around the Universe, another
sphere also decided to go out for a walk. This sphere, that was a
little bit lost, was so absorbed in her walk that she did not realize
that the Earth was also there. Suddenly,… Crash! The vague sphere
crashed into the Earth. The Earth shook terribly; she broke into
tears and cried and cried thousand of tiny stones that her skin threw
away.

6. These were like tiny stones that were thrown into the air like
tears.
- Poor Earth. I am sure she was really shocked with that, John
said.
-Yes, grandad answered. It was a very scary experience for the
Earth. But the most interesting point of this story is that all these
tiny stones like tears that the Earth threw away decided to gather
together, hugging each other very closely, so that they would never
be alone in the Universe.
They gathered so much,
they hugged each other so strongly,
that they made up a new sphere that
would always travel by the Earth.

7. -And this new sphere, made up with all
the tiny stones that the Earth cried after
the crash … is it the Moon then ?
- Very good,John – grandad said, you got
it at first sight.

8. That night, when John went to bed, he
was happier than usual: now he already
knew how the Moon was born. Next time,
he would ask grandad if the Moon was
stuck on the sky with glue or with
transparent hanging threads.
And when John felt aslept, he
dreamt of him hugging the
Moon. Well, he and Eve and
Laura and Nicolas, his school
mates.

10. A Juan le gustaba mirar la luna por
la noche. Le encantaba verla cuando
estaba redonda y brillante, pero
también cuando tenía forma de
plátano. Otras noches la luna
estaba oscura y tenía muy mala
cara. Juan se preguntaba cómo
habría llegado la luna a estar allí en
el cielo.
Y, además, ¡no se caía! Juan pensaba que debía de ser un poco
mágica: “No sé, quizá esté pegada en el cielo con pegamento, o quizá
haya hilos transparentes que la sujeten”.

11. Una noche, cuando a Juan y a Eva, su hermana pequeña, el
abuelo Miguel les estaba leyendo un cuento antes de irse a
la cama, Juan le preguntó:
- Abuelo, ¿tú sabes cómo nació la luna?

12. El abuelo se quedó sorprendido.
No estaba seguro de saber
contestar a Juan. Era una
pregunta un poco difícil.
“Querido Juan, dijo el abuelo, la luna es la mejor amiga de la tierra.
La tierra es el lugar donde nosotros vivimos. Es una esfera azul, muy
grande que vive, como la luna, en un lugar que se llama universo. Las
dos, la tierra y la luna, siempre van juntas, una cerca de la otra”.

13. -¡Ah!, dijo Eva, … ¿y siempre han sido
amigas?, ¿como Sara y yo?
- No, Eva. Primero nació la tierra hace
muchíííísimos años. La tierra vivía
tranquilamente en el universo, y la luna
no había nacido todavía.
Un día, mientras que la tierra paseaba por este sitio tan chulo que se
llama universo, se chocó contra ella otra esfera que pasaba por allí y
que no la había visto. ¡Pluf!, ¡qué golpe se dieron!
La tierra tembló y se agitó mucho pero, sobre todo, lloró y lloró
montones de piedrecitas que se desprendieron de su piel tras el golpe.

14. Eran como lágrimas de piedras que salían despedidas, lanzadas
rápidamente tras el choque.
- Pobre tierra. Vaya susto que se daría, dijo Juan.
- Sí, dijo el abuelo, se dio un susto terrible. Pero lo más interesante
de esta historia, es que todas esas lágrimas en forma de piedrecitas
decidieron juntarse, abrazarse muy apretadas para no quedarse
solas por el universo. Y así, se unieron,
se abrazaron tanto, y tan fuerte, que
formaron una esfera nueva que siempre
viajaría al lado de la tierra.

15. -Y esa esfera nueva, formada por todas
las piedrecitas que lloró la tierra tras el
choque, ¿es entonces la Luna?
- Muy bien, Juan – dijo el abuelo, lo has
entendido perfectamente.

16. Aquella noche, cuando Juan se fue a la
cama, estaba más contento que otras
noches: ahora ya sabía cómo había nacido
la Luna. La próxima pregunta que le haría
al abuelo sería si la Luna estaba pegada
con pegamento o colgaba con hilos
transparentes.
Y cuando Juan se quedó
dormido, soñó que también
abrazaba la Luna. Bueno él, y
Eva, y Laura y Nicolás, sus
amigos del cole.
