How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

PRESENTACIÓN DE LA PERSONA CON ESPECTRO AUTISTA:Leer los gustos de Lucas y enumerar las cosas que le gustan a la persona con autismo que nuestro pequeño lector conoce (y que son comunes a la mayoría de los niños; por ej.: ¿le gustan las patatas fritas? ¿los helados? ¿y correr?)
PRESENTACIÓN DE LAS ALTERACIONES QUE ACOMPAÑAN A LOS CUADROS DE ESPECTRO AUTISTA: En la ilustración se refleja un ejemplo de inflexibilidad y de falta de sentido de la actividad (el modo de colocar en filas las canicas y los coches pone de manifiesto las dificultades para jugar funcional y/o simbólicamente con esos objetos). Mencionar las dificultades concretas en cada caso particular (por ej.: ¿cómo se comunica la persona con autismo que nuestro pequeño lector conoce? ¿qué actividades realiza para entretenerse y jugar? Pedirle al niño que describa las que recuerde y añadir más en el caso de que a él no se le ocurran. Explicarle después que esas dificultades (para jugar y hablar) reciben el nombre de Autismo.
PRESENTACIÓN DE LAS ALTERACIONES DE CONDUCTA: Como ya sabéis, las causas que desencadenan una alteración de conducta son muy variadas (y muchas veces incluso indescifrables e impredecibles si no se realiza un análisis funcional que permita comprenderlas). En cualquier caso, para un niño de 4 o 5 años de edad es todavía más difícil que para un adulto comprender cómo un hecho casi “insignificante” provoca una respuesta tan desproporcionada (en relación a la causa que la originó). En todos estos casos, es importante que nuestro pequeño lector reciba una explicación capaz de satisfacerle (y al tiempo justifique, por ej.: por qué él nunca llora de un modo tan desmedido). Y las únicas respuestas que nuestro pequeño lector podrá comprender serán las que hagan referencia a las dificultades para comunicar. En ese sentido, y si no quedara del todo claro tras la explicación que se le ofrece en el cuento, convendría darle ejemplos que él ha vivido en su propia piel; por ej.: ¿te acuerdas de aquella vez que te despertaste con miedo por la noche y nos llamaste desde tu habitación pero no te oíamos? ¿cómo te sentiste? O ¿te imaginas que hoy no pudieras hablar para pedir las cosas que necesitas? O ... Imagínate que todos fuéramos un poco sordos y que, aunque tú nos dijeras cosas, no pudiéramos oírte,...
PRESENTACIÓN DE LOS CELOS: Es frecuente que los hermanos de los niños autistas sientan celos. No es de extrañar si tenemos en cuenta que, desde su perspectiva, los niños con rasgos de Espectro Autista reciben elogios contínuos por cada éxito (y muchas veces la acción realizada no les parece tan elogiable). A fin de cuentas, para un niño de 4 ó 5 años tampoco parece tan “difícil” emitir una nueva palabra, o permanecer sentado durante unos minutos o ... En este sentido conviene manifestar siempre la enorme importancia que tienen los dos. Los niños que conviven con el autismo deben sentir que también se valoran todos sus éxitos y que se les quiere con la misma intensidad.
LOS APOYOS: Es importante explicarle a nuestro pequeño lector que algunas veces todos necesitamos ayuda para hacer bien las cosas. Conviene buscar ejemplos en la vida cotidiana que pongan de manifiesto distintas ocasiones en las que diferentes personas necesitaron ayuda (para pintar la pared de la casa, para arreglar el televisor, para llevar las bolsas de la compra,...). Después podría mencionarle distintas situaciones en las que él también necesitó ayuda (para abrocharse el abrigo, ponerse los zapatos, prepararse la merienda,...)para, por último, pedirle que piense en cosas que él no podría hacer sin la ayuda de otros. Una vez que haya entendido que todos necesitamos ayuda podremos enumerar todas aquellas situaciones en las que a las personas con autismo también les pasa eso: que necesitan un poco de apoyo para poder hacerlo bien. Finalmente, para fortalecer la unión entre ambos, sería importante destacar todas aquellas cosas que él podría hacer para ayudar (y/o enseñar) a la persona con autismo con la que convive. En este sentido, conviene explicarle que él es may7or, y que la persona con autismo lo está haciendo muy bien porque está aprendiendo y lo está intentando (aunque todavía no sepa hacerlo bien).
LAS DIFICULTADES PARA ANTICIPAR: LAS AGENDAS. Comprender las dificultades para anticipar puede ser extremadamente difícil para nuestro pequeño lector. Y, sin embargo, lo que sí podemos explicarle es que las fotos son importantes para la persona con autismo y que por eso necesita verlas varias veces cada día.
ALTERACIONES EN LA INTERACCIÓN E INFLEXIBILIDAD MENTAL Y COMPORTAMENTAL: Puede que nuestro pequeño lector tenga dificultades para interactuar y encontrar afinidad entre los juegos que a él le divierten y los que entretienen a la persona con rasgos de espectro autista. En este sentido, conviene destacar que a cada persona nos gusta hacer (y jugar) a unas cosas. En esta página sería importante que cada niño hablara de sus propias preferencias y de las preferencias de la persona con rasgos de espectro autista a la que conoce.
