Vecinos de los municipios cercanos a Huiloapan cortan árboles de la colina "El Gentil" por la noche para evadir a las autoridades. La tala ilegal de árboles causa daños porque no discrimina y puede llevar a la extinción de especies únicas de ciertas zonas. La tala legal permite cortar árboles de ciertos bosques tomando en cuenta el tiempo que tarda el bosque en regenerarse.
