Size textoA children are considered premature if born before 37 weeks gestation.
Thanks to the advancement of neonatology and neonatal treatment progress is possible that these children can be
born and grow normally.
Most of them return home with a weight of about 2000 gr and 2500 gr.
First stage: The Sanatorium
Being early means that in their little bodies have not completed the development of their organs. If you were born at
seven months pregnant, you need two months to reach a maturity comparable to that of a baby of 40 weeks, ie,
term.
The actual age of these children is that they have after birth, this would be the chronological age. If a child was
born at 35 weeks and already has two months in fact age is corrected gestational age, it is calculated by
subtracting the number of missing weeks to term (40 weeks) of chronological age. For example if a child was born
at 35 weeks and already has two months (chronological age), has eight weeks (2 months chronological age) less
than five weeks (which was lacking for a period of 40 weeks) = 3 weeks corrected age, ie weight, size and maturity
of a child we compare three weeks.
These children at birth, it costs more to regulate the temperature, that is why we need to be in incubators. There
sanitariums which allow the baby to be a few hours outside the incubator, Pegaditos the mother's body, skin to skin
(kangaroo).
Being allowed to warm to grow faster and use less energy.
If the baby is less than 35 weeks you may not know or cost you suck, that is why fed by tube, the milk goes directly
from the mouth to the stomach. In this way he will not need to suck and so save energy, since the suction for these
children represents an energy expenditure comparable with a marathon for the adult. When you are offered the
mother's nipple or finger of the mother stimulates the sucking.
When the child reaches an appropriate weight and remains stable with temperature and vital signs are discharged.
Second stage: At home
Probably premature infants require checks before being discharged from hospital.
The first area of the body that grows in these children is the head. This catch-up, rapid growth, is a child's normal
compensation to regain weight quickly.
Then there is a child's weight gain and finally of his stature.
The ideal food for these children is also breast milk, both psychological and immunological benefits.
These children they should be supplemented with iron and vitamin D during their first year of life.
If the child should take any supplementary feeding this should be a milk formula for premature babies up to 6 or 9
months of corrected gestational age.
Cow's milk is recommended after the first year of life.
