IntroductionIntroduction
Classrooms are rapidly moving beyond traditional notions of text. For
years, teachers relied almost completely on books and other print texts—
especially in terms of the texts that students were asked to compose.
Because of the changes in technologies available to us today however,
texts in the classroom frequently include a much wider range of modalities
—systems that people use to make meaning. In fact, a single text often
engages more than one way of making meaning (National Council of
Teachers of English, 2005).

• Digital literacies are the essential skills for managing information and
communication in our rapidly changing and increasingly digital world.
• They are adaptable in order to accommodate constantly changing
technologies, whereas traditional technical skill sets are static and
quickly become outdated.

• Literacy includes not only reading and writing but truly the ability to
engage in all types of communication—whether textual, graphical,
auditory, or otherwise. Furthermore, literacy involves not just
communication but also managing the information that is transmitted
by any communication medium (Summey, 2013, p. 3).
• Digital literacies represent in whole the essential skills for managing
information and communication in the rapidly changing and
increasingly digital world that is the 21st century (Summey, 2013, p.
4).

Digital literaciesDigital literacies
• Educators often teach with technology as they use document
cameras, interactive whiteboards, and web-enhanced project-based
learning to facilitate instruction. This, however, does little to equip
students with the skills they need beyond the classroom (Summey,
2013, p. 21).
• Infusing digital literacies within the very fabric of content-area instruction
will result in authentic learning experiences that not only teach the
relevant subject-matter and incorporate 21st-century technology but
also address the vital literacy skills that are emphasized in [educational
technology standards] (Summey, 2013, p. 21)

For years, teachers relied almost completely on books and other print texts— especially in terms of the texts that students were asked to compose. Because of the changes in technologies available to us today however, texts in the classroom frequently include a much wider range of modalities —systems that people use to make meaning.
