2. Objetivos del estudio / Goals of the study
1. To map peatland ecosystems in an area of the
Peruvian Amazon where M. flexuosa dominated
palm swamps are likely to have undergone
degradation over the last three decades
2. To quantify peatland C stocks in this area
according to the extent of peat-forming
ecosystems
3. To assess degradation (and deforestation) of palm
swamp peatlands in this area during the last three
decades (1990-2018) and to quantify resulting
carbon emissions
3. Objetivos / Goals
• Explicar los métodos
• Mostrar los mapas producidos
• Explicar los resultados del studio
• Resumir los principales hallazgos
• Explain the methods
• Show the produced maps
• Explain the results of the study
• Summarize the main findings
4. Métodos / Methods
• Cortar la imagen a seis zonas
• Dibujar polígonos en las zonas
• Clasificar las zonas, y unirlas
• Aplicar un filtro temporal para corregir
transiciones incorrectas
• Crop the image into six zones
• Draw training polygons in the zones
• Classify the zones, and merge them
• Apply a temporal filter to correct for incorrect
transitions
• Apply the peat map as a mask to filter out areas
that do not have peat
• Quantify the area of transitions of degradation
and estimate the carbon emissions
5. Clasificación / Classification
• 6 zonas fueron usadas para clasificar la imagen
• Las áreas fueron fusionadas en orden de
mayor acierto e importancia

Estimating Carbon Emissions from Palm Swamp Degradation
Nivel de degradación/Degradation level Carbono aéreo/Above ground carbon
Low 100.9 ± 7.7 Mg C ha-1
Medium 89.9 ± 6.9 Mg C ha-1
High 83.7 ± 6.4 Mg C ha-1

Estimated above ground Carbon Emissions from Degradation
• The largest area of degradation corresponds with
a drop in density of palm followed by a change in
land cover from palm to woody vegetation
• The degraded area between 2007 and 2018 (11
years) was greater than between 1990 and 2007
(17 years). This suggests that degradation is
accelerating
• Most C emissions correspond with low-density
palm deforestation
• There is high uncertainty about C emissions
