Hegel’s Reading of Rosenzweig
Lucía Pizarro
13
I
analyse in the present essay the thought of a Jewish thinker who, taking
Hegelian idealism as his basis, manages to successfully accord a main
place in the system both to philosophy and religion without sublating
one into the other. Here I present Franz Rosenzweig at once as heir to
Hegelian idealism and as a critic who announces a turn from the totalising
systems of Hegel and German idealism.
In the first part of the present essay, I begin by introducing Rosenzweig’s
confrontation with Hegel and German idealism regarding the way to conceive
human experience. In the second part I give an account of Rosenzweig’s
conception of the relationship between philosophy and theology, where
both are seen as necessitating one another in order to retain their status as
sciences.
Reading Rosenzweig as a critic of Hegel throws light on the
presuppositions of Rosenzweig’s system. At the same time however, in order
to understand Rosenzweig’s system we must also take into consideration
that his critique of Idealism does not mean that he wants to stop using pure
thought (reason). On the contrary; Rosenzweig’s system is intent on securing
both pure thought and belief by asserting their interdependence.
The Confrontation
Rosenzweig’s strongest criticism against Hegel seems to be at first the whole
of the first part of The Star, in which the three elements God, world and man
are portrayed in such a way that it seems impossible for them to relate to one
another through thinking. Here it becomes evident that if we use rigorous
logic and pure philosophical thought we end up only with abstract elements
that are enclosed within themselves.
For Hegel however, there are two kinds of thought. The first is
immediately directed to and dependent on the senses, and may be best
described as pictorial thinking. In other words, as the interaction of sense and
understanding, it finds expression in images which convey the truth through
representative symbols. The form of spirit in religion is representational;
therefore religious awareness is limited. Hegel thus differentiates ‘the
concept’, which is the form of spirit in philosophy, from the pictorial thinking;
the idea ‘in and for itself’ from the mere mental picture, or ideas which still

The argument between the two thinkers, Hegel
and Rosenzweig, can be constructed as follows: Hegel’s The function of the ‘and’ in Rosenzweig’s ‘new
