1. Dido y Eneas
Henry Purcell (Westminster 1659 - 1695) estrenó su ópera "Dido and Aeneas" en 1689 ,
no en un teatro comercial de Londres, sino en el internado para señoritas de la alta
sociedad Josias Priest, Chelsea, si bien parece que no todos los personajes fueron
interpretados por chicas. El estreno comercial tuvo lugar en Londres a principios de 1700.
La versión moderna para coro y solistas de ambos sexos es obra de Benjamin Britten
(1913 - 1976) y fue estrenada el 8 de junio de 1951 en el festival de Aldeburgh.
El libreto es obra del dramaturgo y poeta Nahum Tate (1652 - 1715) basado en el libro IV
de la Eneida de Virgilio; y entre sus pasajes destaca la famosa aria "When I am laid in
earth" (Cuando descanse bajo la tierra)
La duración apenas llega a una hora y está dividida en tres actos, donde se nos narra la
desventurada historia de amor entre la reina de Cartago Dido y el príncipe troyano Eneas
fundador de Roma.
