Common Greetings Many ways to greet someone: Or to a group of people: During a certain time of day: ¡Hola! Hello! Aló Hello (on the phone) ¡Saludos! Salutations! ¿Qué tal? What's up? ¿Qué onda? What's up? ¿Cómo te va? How's it going? (informal) ¿Cómo le va? How's it going? (formal) ¿Cómo estás? How are you? (informal) ¿Cómo está? How are you? (formal) ¿Cómo están? How are you? Using “Tú” or “Usted” There are 2 different ways of saying You—one is familiar and the other is formal. In English, we do this when we use either first or last names. Tú is used for people with who you are familiar. For example, close friends and acquaintances are referred to as tú. So are children and pets. Usted is more formal. You use it for people older than you, strangers, authority figures, and people that you meet for the first time. In some countries, including some parts of Colombia, usted is used, even among close friends. INFORMAL FORMAL ¿ Cómo estás (tú) ? (How are you?) ¿ Cómo está usted ? (How are you?) ¿ Cómo te va ? Masculine and Feminine How do I know if it's “bueno” or “buena”? “Malo” or “mala”? If the speaker responding to the question is a male , then he would use a masculine description. If the speaker responding to the question is a female , then she would use a feminine description. Be advised! If the adjective doesn't end with a vowel, you just leave it as it is, and it will be the same for both feminine and masculine. Common Responses Many ways to respond appropriately to a greeting: Cheery: Not so cheery: In the middle: Or just plain badly: Bien. Good. / Well. Bien, gracias. (Doing) Well, thanks. Va bien.
