A) ¿Qué hora es?
What time is it?
¿Tienes hora?
Do you have the time? (informal)
Perdón, ¿tiene usted hora?
Excuse me, do you have the time? (formal)
B) There are two ways to answer Question A, using two forms of the verb ser.
Es la una. (Used with one o’clock)
Son las dos. (Used with every other hour)
C) Use y (and) to talk about specific times up to the half hour .
Es la una y cinco . (1:05)
Son las tres y veinte . (3:20)
Son las nueve y trece . (9:13)
Two specialized words: media (half past), and cuarto (a quarter past)
** Do not mix cuarto with cuatro (four).
2. Es la una y cuarto. (1:15)
Son las cuatro y cuatro. (4:04)
Son las ocho y media. (8:30)
D) Use menos to talk about time after the half hour .
You simply go to the next hour up and subtract the amount of time from the hour.
Think of it as when we say “till” or “to” an hour in English.
Son las nueve menos diez. (8:50 / 10 till 9)
Es la una menos cuarto. (12:45 / quarter till one)
Son las diez menos cuatro. (9:56 / 4 minutes till 10)
E) To ask when an event will occur:
¿A + qué + hora + verb + event?
To answer: a + la (las) + hour
¿A qué hora es la fiesta de Ismael?
La fiesta de Ismael es a las once.
F) a.m. /p.m.
These expressions are used to refer to a certain time of the day (a.m./p.m.):
de la mañana (in the morning)
Tengo una cita con el dentista a las ocho de la mañana.
de la tarde (in the afternoon)
Voy de la escuela a las cuatro de la tarde.

G) During….
Use these expressions to express a time of day that you do something continually:
por la mañana (during the mornings)
Yo como el desayuno por la mañana.
por la tarde (during the afternoons)
Mis amigos y yo pasamos un rato por la tarde.
por la noche (during nightime)
Yo estudio por la noche.
H) Otras frases útiles:
1) el mediodía (noon) Yo como el almuerzo al mediodía.
2) la medianoche (midnight). Yo estudio hasta la medianoche.
3) el reloj (clock/watch) Miro mi reloj para ver qué hora es.
4) hasta (until) Yo bailo en la fiesta hasta la medianoche.
5) en punto (on the dot/sharp) Yo siempre llego a la clase a las ocho en punto.
6) durante (during) Durante la clase de español, yo aprendo mucho.
