Good Morning (Afternoon)I am delighted to be here in Miami and have the opportunity to address such an important and diverse audience, mainly from our sister countries of Latin America, but also important participants, from the US and all over the world, of this fascinating industry of Private Equity. Thanks to the organizers for the invitation, which allows me to share with you some ideas and the developments in Private Equity in Mexico, and particularly what our institution, Nafinsa, has been doing in support of this important industry for Mexico.Let me start telling you which is the role of our Institution:
As we can see in this chart, the investment made in PE and VC worldwide during 2004 was close to 115 billion US.If we look at economies such as the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and Canada, we will find that they concentrate around 90% of the global private equity commitments, being the United States the main receptor of these resources with more than 50 % worldwide. Whereas Latin America appears with only 1%.It is surprising that smaller economies than the Mexican, receive a significant amount of these investment resources, leaving Mexico behind in a minority position. While Brazil concentrates 45% of the private equity investment commitments, and Argentina 28%, Mexico only doubles Chiles’ position, regardless of the fact that the Mexican economy is almost six times larger than the Chilean.
