2. Clever Coyote
Once upon a time, a long ago, a monster stole all the buffalo
from the plains and put them in his mountain hideout. “All for
me!” roared the monster.
Coyote, a wild dog, called all the people and all the
animals together in a great meeting to figure out what
they could do.

3. Clever Coyote
Hace mucho tiempo, un monstruo se llevó a todos los
búfalos de las grandes praderas americanas y los encerró
en la cima de una montaña fuera del alcance de todo el
mundo. “¡TODOS PARA MÍ!”, rugió el terrible
monstruo.
Coyote, un perro salvaje, reunió a todos
los animales y personas para tratar de
buscar una solución entre todos.

4. No one had an idea. They were too afraid of the
monster to think at all.
"I scouted the monster," Coyote spoke up. "He
lives with a very small boy."
"We cannot hurt a child," said one of the
people. "Not even to get back our buffalo."
Nadie sabía qué hacer. Tenían demasiado miedo para pensar.
“Yo espié al monstruo,” dijo Coyote en voz alta. “Y vive con
un niño muy pequeño”.
“Pero no podemos hacer daño a un niño”, dijo una persona.
“Ni siquiera para traer a nuestros búfalos de vuelta”.

5. "That is understood," Coyote nodded. "But I was thinking …
a small boy must be very lonely with no one
to love except a horrible
monster. I think we should
give him a pet to love.
When the chance arises,
the pet we send can set the
buffalo free."
All the people and all the
animals thought that was a
marvelous idea.

6. “Eso es comprensible," afirmó Coyote. "Pero yo estaba
pensando… que un niño pequeño no debería crecer con nadie
a quien amar excepto a un horrible monstruo.
Creo que deberíamos
enviar a alguno de nosotros
para que sea su mascota.
Cuanto tenga la
oportunidad, la mascota
podría liberar a los
búfalos”.
Y a todos les pareció una
maravillosa idea.

7. First, they sent Mouse to win the heart of the small boy. The
boy liked Mouse and took him home. But the monster told the
boy to send Mouse away. Next, the people sent Killdeer, a
bird. But the bird fared no better.
Coyote called another meeting. "I think," Coyote told all the
people and all the animals, "that I must go myself."
Primero, ellos enviaron al ratón para ganarse el cariño del
pequeño. Al niño le encantó el ratón y se lo llevó a casa, pero el
monstruo lo obligó a echarlo de allí. Después, la gente envió a
Killdeer, el pájaro. Pero no escapó mejor.
Coyote propuso otra reunión. “Creo que debería ir yo mismo”,
dijo a los demás animales y personas.

8. That very day, Coyote set out for the
monster's lair. When the boy saw Coyote,
his eyes brightened. The boy loved
Coyote immediately and took him home.
The monster was angry. "Get that mangy
dog out of here before I eat you both!"
The boy and Coyote ran out of the lair. The
boy sat down. He tried not to cry, but a tear
ran down one cheek. Coyote licked it
away.

9. Aquel día muy temprano, Coyote
emprendió el camino hacia la guarida del
monstruo. Cuando el chico lo vió, sus
ojos brillaron. Al chico le encantó su
nueva mascota y enseguida lo llevó con él
a casa.
El monstruo enfureció. "¡Coge a ese perro
sarnoso y llévatelo de aquí antes de que os
coma a los dos!"
Ambos huyeron. El chico se sentó en el
suelo e intentó no llorar, pero las lágrimas
cayeron por sus mejillas. El coyote trató de
consolarlo.

10. "Poor dog," sniffed the boy. "I bet you're hungry."
Coyote put back his head and howled. That is the sound Coyote
makes to comfort you.
The buffalo heard Coyote's cry. It frightened them. They began
shuffling and stamping their feet the way buffalo do when they
are nervous.

11. "Pobre perro", sollozó el niño. “Apuesto a que estás hambriento”.
Coyote echó la cabeza hacia atrás y aulló. Ese es el sonido que
los Coyotes hacen para que te sientas mejor.
Los búfalos oyeron el lamento del Coyote, y se asustaron.
Empezaron a arrastar y estampar sus patas como hacen ellos
cuando están nerviosos.

12. The more the boy cried, and the more
Coyote howled to make him feel
better, the more frightened the
buffalo became. One buffalo began
to run. The other buffalo ran after
him. They ran until they had
scattered all over the Plains.
Howling angrily, the monster ran
after the buffalo.
While the monster was gone,
Coyote took the small boy to live
with the people.

13. Cuanto más lloraba el chico, y más y más aullaba el
coyote para hacerle sentir mejor, más y más se
asustaban también los búfalos. Uno de ellos empezó
a correr. Otro le siguió. Y otro más. Así, hasta que
se habían dispersado por toda la pradera. Rugiendo
como un energúmeno, el monstruo corrió detrás de
los búfalos.
Una vez el monstruo se había ido, el coyote aprovechó para
llevarse al niño a vivir con otras personas de las praderas.

14. The monster grew more and more angry, but he could not
find a single buffalo. The buffalo had scattered without a
trace.
Late that night, when the monster stomped home to his lair,
young warriors were waiting. They killed the monster,
much to the relief of one small boy and all of the people and
all of the animals.
El monstruo se enfadó más y más, pero no pudo encontrar
ni a un sólo búfalo: se habían dispersado sin dejar rastro.
Aquella noche, cuando el monstruo llegó a su cueva, había
unos jóvenes guerreros esperando. Mataron al monstruo
para alivio de todos.

15. That is why the elders say it is Coyote
to whom we owe the buffalo. Even
today, the people still give thanks to
clever Coyote.
If it had not been for the smart head
and warm heart of one little dog, that
horrible monster would have kept all
the buffalo for himself forever.
Por eso se dice que gracias a los coyotes tenemos a los
búfalos. Incluso hoy, la gente sigue agradeciéndoselo a
aquel listo coyote.
Si no hubiera sido por la brillante mente y el gran corazón
de aquel pequeño perro, el horrible monstruo se habría
llevado a los búfalos para siempre.
