fue un físico,ingeniero,inventor,astrónomoymatemáticogriego.Aunque se conocenpocos
detallesde suvida,esconsideradounode loscientíficosmásimportantesde laAntigüedad
clásica.Entre sus avancesenfísica se encuentransusfundamentosenhidrostática,estáticayla
explicacióndelprincipiode lapalanca.Esreconocidoporhaber diseñadoinnovadorasmáquinas,
incluyendoarmasde asedioyel tornillode Arquímedes,que llevasunombre.Experimentos
modernoshanprobadolasafirmacionesde que Arquímedesllegóadiseñarmáquinascapacesde
sacar barcos enemigosdel aguaoprenderlesfuegoutilizandounaserie de espejos.1
Se consideraque Arquímedesfue unode losmatemáticosmásgrandesde laantigüedady,en
general,de todalahistoria.23 Usó el métodoexhaustivoparacalcularel áreabajo el arco de una
parábolacon el sumatoriode unaserie infinita,ydiounaaproximaciónextremadamente precisa

Arquímedesmuriódurante el sitiode Siracusa(214-212 a. C.),cuando fue asesinadoporun

antiquity.Amonghisadvancesinphysicsare the foundationsonhydrostatics,staticsandthe
explanationof the principleof the lever.Itisrecognizedfordesigninginnovativemachines,
includingsiegeweaponsandthe Archimedesscrew,whichbearshisname.Modernexperiments
have testedclaimsthatArchimedesdesignedmachinescapable reachedenemyboatstotake
wateror set onfire usinga seriesof espejos.1

antiquity.MathematiciansfromAlexandriareadandquotedhim, butthe firstcomprehensive
compilationof hisworkwasnotmade until c.530 d.C. by Isidore of Miletus.The commentsof the
worksof ArchimedeswrittenbyEutociusinthe sixthcenturyfirstopenedtoawideraudience.The
relativelyfewcopiesof writtenworksof Archimedesthatsurvivedthroughthe Middle Ageswere
an importantsource of ideasduringthe Renaissance,inMaywhile the discoveryin1906 of
unknownworksbyArchimedesinthe ArchimedesPalimpsesthashelpedunderstandhow he
obtainedresultsmatemáticos.6
