ESTE ES UN PUENTE
Un puente que va desde el cielo hasta el fondo del mar. Y desde el mar hasta la punta del cielo.
Y que desde allí nos lleva a todos los lugares posibles y no posibles.
Un puente que comunica a los que tienen, con los que necesitan. A los que necesitan, con sus
propias ganas de ayudarse. A las ganas de ayudarse, con las ganas de ayudar a otros.
Un puente que va desde Arica hasta Punta Arenas. Desde una mediagua hasta una
gran transnacional... De ida y de vuelta.
Un puente que va desde la razón hasta el corazón. Desde el corazón hasta los bolsillos. Y
desde los bolsillos hacia pequeños y grandes sueños.
Un puente inmenso, lleno de colores y voluntad que nos lleva desde la adversidad hasta la
esperanza de lograr un Chile mucho mejor.
Pero lo importante no es quiénes somos, sino lo que juntos estamos haciendo…
This is a bridge. A bridge that stretches from the sky to the ocean floor. And from the ocean to the tip of the sky.
From there it takes us to all places possible and impossible.
A bridge that communicates those who have with those who need. And those who need with their own will to help
themselves. It connects the desire to help oneself to the desire to help others.
A bridge from Arica to Punta Arenas. From a temporary home to a huge multinational company. There and back.
A bridge from the head to the heart. From the heart to the pocket. And from many pockets to many dreams,
big and small. A massive bridge, filled with color and perseverance that takes us from adversity to the
hope of making Chile a much better place.
The important thing, however, is not who we are, but what we can do together...

Con gran alegría y orgullo presentamos nuestro segundo libro. Este
resume las actividades realizadas por el equipo de Desafío Levantemos
Chile en estos dos últimos años, desde la perspectiva de muchos de los
actores involucrados. Tanto beneficiados como benefactores. Y cuando
comienzas a recordar todo el trabajo realizado, te emocionas al ver que
el legado de nuestros fundadores y amigos, Felipe, Sebastián, Joaquín,
Cata, Jorge y Joel está cada día más vigente. Sin duda alguna, ellos son
los guardianes de nuestra estrella, dándonos la energía necesaria para
que esta fundación siga ayudando a miles de chilenos a cumplir sus
sueños e impulsar una cultura emprendedora en todo el país.
Descubrimos en este tiempo que el terremoto de la pobreza no se puede
apoyar desde una sola área, sino que debe ser multifocal. Sería mucho
más fácil dedicarse a una sola actividad, pero creemos que debemos
contribuir a que Chile sea un país más justo e inclusivo.
Entendemos la solidaridad como eficiencia, apuntamos a un trabajo
bien hecho y con excelencia; generando un impacto social de calidad y
sustentable en el tiempo, usando modelos replicables.
Por esta razón, Desafío hoy capacita y asesora a los emprendedores a
través de las escuelas Felipe Cubillos Sigall; el área de Salud desarrolla
un modelo de gestión colaborativo e innovador público-privado que lleva
especialistas a regiones; acercamos el mundo de la Cultura y el Deporte
It is with great joy and pride that we present our second book, a
compendium of the activities carried out by Desafío Levantemos Chile
over the past two years. This volume includes the perspectives of
many of the people involved in our projects, those who have given and
those who have received. As I begin to look back on all that has been
achieved, it is wonderfully moving to realize that the legacy of our
founders and friends, Felipe, Sebastián, Joaquín, Cata, Jorge and Joel
is growing stronger every day. Without a doubt, they are the guardians
and protectors looking after our star, giving the foundation the energy
it needs to continue helping thousands of Chileans fulfill their dreams
and cultivate a culture of entrepreneurship all over the country.
During this time we learned that the earthquake of poverty cannot be
tackled from one single area; any effort must be multifocal. It would
be easier to focus on one area but we believe that we must help
make Chile a fairer, more inclusive country. We understand solidarity
to mean efficiency, our goal is to do our job well, with excellence; to
generate true social impact and use replicable models that will stand
the test of time.
For this reason, Desafío trains and advises entrepreneurs through
the schools that bear Felipe Cubillos Sigall’s name. The Health area

a jóvenes de sectores vulnerables; en Educación construimos jardines
infantiles en lugares apartados y en comunidades altamente vulnera-
bles y ejecutamos a la vez el programa “Desafío Aprender” y, por último,
a través de Emergencia Solidaria y su campaña permanente, A Mí Sí Me
Importa, apoyamos a quienes lo necesitan en diversas circunstancias.
DE ARICA A PUERTO WILLIAMS
Tras terminar nuestro trabajo de reconstrucción en las zonas afectadas
por el terremoto y tsunami de febrero de 2010, apreciamos que aún
había millones de chilenos a lo largo de todo el país que necesitaban un
impulso para salir adelante. Nos propusimos entonces la nueva meta de
realizar proyectos en las 15 regiones del país, especialmente en aque-
llos lugares de más difícil acceso y, por lo tanto, más postergados.
Con el objetivo de continuar concretando aquellos sueños que parecen
imposibles, en marzo de 2012 desafiamos al Banco de Chile, generando
una alianza que nos permite trabajar comprometidos y de forma colabo-
rativa por un país más inclusivo y equitativo.
Ese mismo año, iniciamos juntos la campaña “50 Desafíos para Chile”
que recibió la postulación de más de 1.000 proyectos que querían
apoyo para mejorar la calidad de vida y el desarrollo de comunidades
en todo Chile.

sports to young people in disadvantaged areas. In Education we have
built preschools in remote areas and in at-risk communities, and
we have successfully executed the “Desafío de Aprender” program.
Through the Emergency Solidarity program and its permanent
campaign, A Mí Sí Me Importa, we support people in a variety of
circumstances who are in need of help.
FROM ARICA TO PUERTO WILLIAMS
After concluding our reconstruction efforts in areas affected by the
earthquake and tsunami of February 2010, we realized that there
were still millions of Chileans who needed a boost to move forward in
their lives. And so we challenged ourselves to a new goal of carrying
out projects in all 15 regions in Chile, particularly in the most remote
places that were also often the most overlooked.
With the aim of continuing to make a reality of those dreams that
seem impossible, in 2012 we challenged Banco de Chile to join us
in an alliance which would allow us to work engaged together in a
struggle for a more inclusive and fairer country. That year, with Banco
de Chile we initiated the “50 Desafíos para Chile” (50 Challenges for
Chile) campaign, which received over 1,000 applications representing
“Queremos que 17.000.000 de chilenos se desafíen y se involucren en ayudar a su comunidad, que seamos
un motor de cambio y puente. Créanme que es la labor más gratificante que les puede tocar vivir”.

Una vez seleccionados los 50 proyectos –11 de educación, 8 de depor-
tes, 11 de emprendimiento, 4 de salud, 9 sociales, 4 de energía y 3 de
medio ambiente–, Desafío invitó a numerosas personas y empresas a
contribuir con el financiamiento y desarrollo de estos. Muchos de esos
proyecto los podrán conocer a través de este libro.
Por otra parte, juntos también realizamos la primera campaña de cap-
tación de socios, donde nos entregaron un gran apoyo para movilizar a
millones de chilenos a ser parte de la solución.
Tras esta gran travesía, en abril de este año el norte de nuestro país
fue afectado por un terremoto grado 8,3 y luego, Valparaíso, por un
incendio que afectó a ocho cerros de la ciudad. Y para ir en ayuda de
aquellos compatriotas que estaban pasando por un mal momento y
que necesitaban de nuestro apoyo, junto al Banco de Chile realizamos
la campaña “Levantemos Chile” que nos permitió entregar en tan sólo
seis días 36 motores fuera de borda a pescadores de las caletas en
Iquique, además de 350 herramientas de trabajo a emprendedores que
perdieron su fuente laboral tras el terremoto del norte y el incendio de
la quinta región.
NUESTROS LOGROS
Desafío dedica el 100% de su trabajo y su energía a ayudar a quienes
projects aimed at improving the quality of life of communities all over
Chile.
After selecting the 50 projects –11 in education, 8 in sports, 11 in
entrepreneurship, 4 in health, 9 socially-oriented programs, and 3
environmental initiatives– Desafío invited many people and companies
to help finance and develop them. This book contains the stories behind
many of these projects.
Another aspect of our collaboration has been to develop and launch
the first campaign for recruiting partners with whose support we are
able to mobilize millions of chileans to become part of the solution.
As we were undertaking this journey together, the north of our
country was shaken by an 8,3 Richter scale earthquake. Shortly
afterwards a devastating forest fire destroyed more than eight of the
inhabited hills of the port of Valparaíso. In order to help our fellow
Chileans badly affected by the disasters and who needed our help,
we developed, with Banco de Chile, a campaign “Levantemos Chile”
through which we are able to get -in less than six days- 36 much-
needed outboard motors to the small-business fishermen in Iquique,
as well as 350 work tools to those who had lost their source of work
either through the earthquake in the north of the country or because
of the fire in the fifth region.

en todo el país. Nuestra labor se orienta hacia un estilo que busca servir
de puente entre quienes tienen las carencias con quienes tienen la
posibilidad de ayudar, sean personas o empresas. Y los beneficiados con
este trabajo han sido más de 200.000 personas, cifra que representa
llegar al 10% de la población más vulnerable de nuestro país.
Quisiera agradecer a mi amigo Felipe Cubillos, quien nos tocó el corazón
y nos involucró en este maravilloso proyecto. A nuestros tremendos vo-
luntarios, porque sin su pasión y efectividad esta Fundación no existiría
y a tantas personas y empresas solidarias que confían en nosotros, en
especial a nuestros dos amigos permanentes, Banco de Chile e Easy,
quien este año se sumó a esta gran travesía para continuar apoyando a
más personas. Sin ellos difícilmente esto sería posible.
Por último, quiero enviarle un mensaje a todos los beneficiados: Desafío
Levantemos Chile trabaja y gestiona para entregarte una herramienta
de trabajo. Úsala con pasión, alegría y persigue tus sueños sin límites,
por más imposibles que estos parezcan.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS
Desafío has dedicated 100% of its efforts and energy to help those in
need. All donations received are used to finance projects that directly
assist people all over the country. Our work seeks to act as a bridge
between those in need with those who are able to help, whether they
are people or companies. Over 200,000 people have benefitted from our
work; that means we have reached 10% of the most at-risk sector of our
population.
I would like to thank Felipe Cubillos, who touched our hearts and got
us involved in this spectacular project; our extraordinary volunteers,
without whose passion and effectiveness this Foundation would not
exist; and all the people and companies who have shown their solidarity
by trusting us and helping us to continue supporting as many people as

Desafío es una catalizador por Chile y los chilenos. Creemos, y lo
hemos comprobado en estos años, que con las habilidades y recursos
que disponemos como personas y como sociedad, podemos transformar
nuestro país en uno más inclusivo y con reales oportunidades para los
que no las tienen.
A partir de esta experiencia queremos seguir invirtiendo esos recursos
en atender más de esos terremotos que se viven día a día y que hacen
necesario seguir reconstruyendo la sociedad, la política y a las perso-
nas. Esta reconstrucción es amplia y queremos hacerla con una visión
integradora, con todos los actores involucrados sumando fuerzas y
capacidades; haciendo que el desafío sea de todos.
Trabajamos con una mirada multifocal y es por ello que contamos hoy
con 5 áreas de intervención: Emprendimiento, Educación, Cultura y de-
porte, Emergencia solidaria y Salud. Lo hacemos convocando a las per-
sonas civiles, las instituciones, empresas y también al Estado a aportar
recursos materiales y humanos. Contamos con un extraordinario equipo
humano de entrega total por la causa que alentamos y una platafor-
ma abierta, transversal e incluyente, que usa todas las herramientas
disponibles para lograr cambios que hoy parecen imposibles. En Desafío
Levantemos Chile trabajamos desde la alegría y la pasión, con valentía y
disfrutando el camino recorrido más que la meta propiamente tal.
Desafío is a cause for Chile and Chileans. We believe –and we have
proven this over the past few years– that with the abilities and resources
we possess as people and as a society, we can transform Chile into a
country that is more inclusive, a country that offers real opportunities to
those who don’t have them.
We hope to continue investing our resources in people, to help them
through more of those everyday earthquakes that reveal how imperative
it is to continue rebuilding our society, and our people. This is a broad
definition of reconstruction, and we want to carry it out with everyone
involved with their own individual strengths and abilities, so that the
challenge belongs to all of us.
Today we operate through five areas of intervention: entrepreneurship,
education, culture and sports, emergency solidarity and health. We do
this by appealing to members of civil society, institutions, companies
and the government, and asking them to contribute both human and
material resources. We are fortunate to have an extraordinary team who
give the very best of themselves to our cause, and we have established
an open, inclusive platform that uses every available tool to achieve the
changes that, today, may seem impossible. At Desafío Levantemos Chile
we work with joy, passion, and courage. We value not only the goals we
set for ourselves, but the path we take to reach those goals.

El programa A Mí Sí Me Importa (AMSMI) nació después del terre-
moto de 2010, cuando se abrió una ventana y pudimos ver que miles
de chilenos viven un terremoto diario en sus vidas como resultado de
diversas necesidades. Y ya que estamos en un mundo que gira en torno
a las redes sociales, la idea, entonces, fue llevar esas necesidades que
íbamos descubriendo a una plataforma web, www.amisimeimporta.cl,
para que se generara un puente de ayuda directa.
Principalmente nos preocupamos de pequeñas y grandes emergencias,
como las llamamos. Por una parte, aquellas emergencias del día a
día, las de personas que se ven enfrentadas a una situación que no les
permite salir adelante. Nosotros buscamos suplir esas necesidades con-
cretas a través de los donantes que se conectan en nuestra web. Casos,
por ejemplo, de niños que tienen alergia alimentaria y necesitan un tarro
de leche cada tres días que cuesta 25 mil pesos y cuyos papás ganan el
sueldo mínimo, o emprendedores sumamente esforzados que pierden
su maquinaria de trabajo o, más simple aún, conseguir un colchón nue-
vo para algún abuelito que vive postrado…
Las grandes emergencias, en tanto, son aquellas en las que se produce
un número importante de damnificados que necesita ayuda urgente, ya
sea por aluviones, incendios o terremotos. A ellos también los ayudamos
The area called A Mí Sí Me Importa (AMSMI), which means “I do care,”
came about after the 2010 earthquake, when a window opened up and
allowed us to see how many thousands of Chileans live with some kind
of everyday earthquake in their lives, resulting from a broad range of
unmet needs. Given that we live in an age that revolves around social
networks, we came up with the idea of bringing those needs that we were
learning about to a web-based platform, www.amisimeimporta.cl, to
create a bridge for direct aid. Primarily we are concerned with what we
call emergency situations, large and small. Those kinds of emergencies
that people must confront on a daily basis, situations that keep them
from moving forward in their lives. We seek to fill those very specific
needs through the donors that connect via our web site. The cases are
varied in nature: parents earning the minimum wage whose children
have food allergies that require a new can of formula every three days
at 25,000 pesos per can; hardworking entrepreneurs whose machines
suddenly stop functioning; and even simpler requests, like the need for a
proper mattress for an infirm grandparent who can’t get out of bed...
The great emergencies are those that produce a significant number of
victims who need urgent assistance, whether because of floods, fires, or
earthquakes. We also help people in those situations get back on their

aluvión en Punta Arenas, el incendio de Quellón, el de Rodelillo y muchos
otros incendios pequeños como el del Campamento Juan Pablo II. Lo
más grande, sí, han sido el terremoto del Norte y el incendio en Valpa-
raíso en abril de 2014. Reaccionamos rápido y partimos de inmediato a
validar las necesidades. Hubo mucha gente que se nos acercó porque
quería ayudar y en muy poco tiempo recibimos miles de donaciones
para las personas damnificadas. Logramos grandes cosas con los
emprendedores, nos conseguimos camiones y retiramos de manera efi-
ciente los escombros, lo que nos hizo darnos cuenta de que cada día A
Mí Sí Me Importa está más fuerte. Fue un gran estímulo el que en estas
emergencias la gente haya acudido espontáneamente a nosotros para
ayudar y para recibir ayuda, saber que confían en Desafío.
El programa es muy bonito porque se manifiesta la ayuda entre la co-
munidad. Es la sociedad civil la que se conecta a través de este puente
que somos nosotros: el que tiene y quiere ayudar con el que necesita
ayuda y quiere salir adelante. En estos dos años llevamos 642 casos
resueltos con 26.487 beneficiados directos en todo Chile, ya que gracias
al convenio con TNT Express hemos podido llegar a todas las regiones
del país.
Por otra parte, ya llevamos más de mil personas que han donado al me-
nos una vez para solucionar un caso. Y el llamado a quienes no lo han
hecho todavía es que prueben: con un click le pueden cambiar la vida a
una persona.
feet. In recent years we have witnessed a number of these catastrophic
events: the flood in Punta Arenas, the fires in Quellón and Rodelillo, and
many other small fires like the one that broke out in the Juan Pablo
II shantytown. The most serious of these were the earthquake in the
north and the fire in Valparaíso in April 2014. We reacted quickly and
were on the scene immediately to address people’s needs. Many people
approached us wanting to help and in very little time we received
thousands of donations for those affected. We achieved great things with
businesspeople, we secured trucks to cart away the rubble, which made
us realize that A Mí Sí Me Importa is growing stronger every day. It is
hugely motivating to see how people spontaneously approach us to give
and receive help during these kinds of emergencies, to see how they
trust and believe in Desafío.
This program is particularly special because it is a community-wide
phenomenon and effort. It is civil society that makes its own connections
through this bridge that we have created: on one hand, the person who
has something to give and wants to reach out, and on the other hand, the
person who needs help and wants to move forward. Over the course of
two years we are proud to have resolved 642 cases with 26,487 direct
beneficiaries all over the country, now that our alliance with TNT Express
allows us to reach every corner of Chile.
Over one thousand people have donated at least once to resolve an
emergency. And we make the same invitation to those who haven’t done
so yet, to give it a try. With a click you can change someone’s life.

El Área Emprendimiento tiene sus orígenes en el año 2003, cuando
Felipe Cubillos era decano de la Facultad de Economía de la Universi-
dad Diego Portales y con mucha sensibilidad inició cursos enfocados a
fomentar la cultura emprendedora en las personas, para luego, en 2006,
crear la “Fundación Imagina, pequeños negocios, grandes emprendedo-
res” junto a Goran Ahumada, actual director del área Emprendimiento.
Tras el terremoto de 2010 dicha fundación dio inicio a Desafío Levante-
mos Chile bajo la filosofía de no regalar las cosas, sino ayudar a quien
quiere salir adelante y esté dispuesto a trabajar para conseguirlo.
Bajo esa premisa, en el área de Emprendimiento trabajamos de una ma-
nera anti asistencialista, buscando fomentar el emprendimiento en los
sectores populares para contribuir a la superación de brechas sociales.
Esto, mediante la entrega de distintas herramientas y conocimientos
para que ellos mismos puedan salir adelante a través de su esfuerzo.
Con este objetivo, en el área desarrollamos muchos proyectos, donde el
más ambicioso hasta ahora son las Escuelas de Emprendimiento, de las
cuales ya hemos construido dos. Una en la comuna de Estación Central

The Entrepreneurship area came about in 2003, when Felipe
Cubillos was Dean of the Economics Department at Universidad Diego
Portales. With his keen insight he began introducing courses aimed at
encouraging people to adopt the culture of the entrepreneur. In 2006
he formed Fundación Imagina, with the motto “small businesses,
great entrepreneurs,” with Goran Ahumada, the director of the
Entrepreneurship area. Following the 2010 earthquake the foundation
established Desafío Levantemos Chile, with the philosophy of never
giving things away, but helping people who want to move forward and
are prepared to work to get what they need.
With this premise in mind, in the Entrepreneurship area we are anti-
handout; we seek to encourage enterprise among less advantaged sectors
as a way of breaking down social barriers. We do this by offering tools and
knowledge so that people can help themselves through their own efforts.
To this end, we develop a variety of different projects, the most
ambitious of which are the Entrepreneurship Academies. We have
built two so far, one in the Santiago district of Estación Central, and
the other in Valdivia. Anyone who wants to move forward in life is
welcome: from people who already operate a business to those who
want to start one. At the academy, we run a lot of workshops to help
people devise business plans, and we have a course called “Ideas and

rubro. En paralelo ofrecemos cursos de comunicación efectiva, clínicas
jurídicas, apoyo psicológico y asesorías de diseño, junto a tutorías y
seguimiento para lograr que los emprendedores puedan sostener su ne-
gocio en el tiempo. Además, apoyamos a nuestros alumnos en la comer-
cialización de sus productos a través del sitio web de ventas directas
www.mercadoemprendedor.cl y también con créditos especiales gracias
a un convenio con CrediChile. Por otro lado, Desafío desarrolló su propia
OTEC (Organismo Técnico de Capacitación) lo que permite tener cursos
en otras áreas como la sustentabilidad o la cultura de servicio, con lo
que podemos apoyar a los emprendedores de manera más integral.
Actualmente estamos desarrollando nuevos proyectos. Destaca uno que
se enfoca en las “empresas B”, para resolver problemáticas sociales o
medioambientales, involucrando al emprendedor como un agente de
cambio en su comunidad. También queremos continuar trabajando en
zonas rurales alejadas –como ya lo hicimos con el proyecto El Romeral,
en La Serena–, a través del programa “Emprende Sostenible”.
Si tuviera que destacar un logro en estos dos últimos años, ha sido
la generación de una comunidad de emprendedores que colaboran
entre ellos, que han logrado ver en el otro una oportunidad de negocio.
¿Nuestra próxima meta? Seguir desarrollando proyectos innovadores
y de vanguardia. Si podemos plantear a las personas la oportunidad de
descubrir sus sueños, qué les hace mover su corazón y trabajar desde
ahí, tenemos una oportunidad gigante de cambiar Chile; el desafío es
hacer soñar a las personas y aterrizar sus sueños.
Businesses” for those people who want to start something but don’t
quite know what to do. We offer courses on effective communication,
legal clinics, psychological support and design-related consultancy, as
well as seminars and follow-up support to help our entrepreneurs keep
their businesses up and running over time. We also assist our students
in the commercialization of their products through the direct-sale web
site www.mercadoemprendedor.cl, and also have a special loan program
thanks to an alliance with CrediChile. Desafío also developed its own OTEC
(Technical Training Organization), which allows us to run courses in other
areas, such as sustainability or service culture, which help us to support
our entrepreneurs more completely.
We continue to generate new projects. For example, we have one
focused on “B companies,” aimed at solving social or environmental
issues and involving the entrepreneur as an agent of change in his or
her community. We also want to continue working in remote rural areas
–as we already did in places like El Romeral, in La Serena– through the
sustainable entrepreneurship program Emprende Sostenible.
If I were to draw attention to one achievement over these past two years
it would have to be the cultivation of a community of entrepreneurs who
help one another, who have been able to see the business opportunities
in themselves and their peers. Our next goal? To continue developing
innovative projects. If we can give people the opportunity to discover their
dreams, to figure out what makes their hearts beat, and work from there,
we have a real chance at changing Chile. The challenge is to get people to
dream, and then to help them bring those dreams down to Earth.

Desde siempre Desafío ha estado muy ligado a la educación. Tras el te-
rremoto de 2010, uno de los primeros objetivos fue recuperar escuelas
y jardines infantiles que habían sido dañados o destruidos y lograr que
los niños volvieran a estudiar lo más pronto posible. Nos enfocamos en
recuperar infraestructura, y a la fecha ya llevamos 19 jardines infantiles
construidos gracias al aporte de muchas empresas y particulares.
Hasta entonces, todo nuestro trabajo estaba basado en la rapidez pero,
a medida que íbamos construyendo, nos fuimos involucrando con ese
gran mundo que es la educación en los sectores más vulnerables de
nuestro país y no pudimos quedarnos indiferentes a lo que pasaba den-
tro de esas salas de clases.
Superada la emergencia, comenzamos a tomarnos más tiempo para
desarrollar los proyectos. Así hemos realizado construcciones donde la
arquitectura se adapta a la cultura donde están emplazados, como en
Quellón, Chiloé, donde hicimos el primer jardín infantil inspirado en la
arquitectura mapuche, trabajando con la interculturalidad.
Así fue también como nació el programa “Desafío de Aprender”, una
propuesta para intervenir la realidad de aquellos jardines infantiles que
veíamos con más necesidades. Si lográbamos mejorar las dos cosas,
infraestructura y calidad de educación, el aporte a la sociedad sería
mucho mejor; estaríamos nivelando hacia arriba.
Desafío has always had a strong connection to Education. After the
2010 earthquake, one of our first goals was to rebuild those schools
and preschools that had been damaged or destroyed so that children
could get back to their classrooms as soon as possible. We focused on
recovering infrastructure, and to date we have rebuilt 19 preschools all
over Chile thanks to the support of many people and companies.
Until that point, all our work was based on speed, but in the process
of building these schools we got more and more involved with that
immense world of education in the more vulnerable parts of our country,
and we simply could not remain indifferent to what was happening in
the classroom.
Once we had gotten through the post-earthquake emergency, we began
to take more time to develop different projects. We started to build
schools that adapted to the cultures in which they were located, like in
Quellón, Chiloé, where we built the first preschool inspired by Mapuche
architecture, taking cues from the rucas and working interculturally.
That was also the genesis of the Desafío de Aprender (The Challenge
to Learn) project, which would get us involved in the reality of those
preschools that we felt had more pressing needs to be met. If we could
achieve infrastructure and education quality, our contribution to society
would be that much greater, as we would be leveling the playing field

Con “Desafío de Aprender”, financiados principalmente por la señora
Evelyn Ergas, apoyamos a jardines alternativos de la Junji (Junta Nacio-
nal de Jardines Infantiles); aquellos que no cuentan con mucho apoyo y
tienen educadores con una preparación más básica, si bien lo hacen con
mucho cariño. ¿Cuál es nuestro aporte? Llevar a los mejores profesiona-
les en el área para capacitar a estos equipos, sea donde sea que estén
ubicados los jardines. Les entregamos las herramientas para que sean
jardines infantiles que preparen a los niños para los desafíos que van a
tener posteriormente en el colegio.
El ‘Desafío de Aprender’ es una intervención total a la educación en
cuanto a contenidos y motivación y se trabaja con los educadores, los
niños y sus familias. El programa consiste en 19 actividades, las que in-
cluyen clínicas deportivas, un operativo dental y trece capacitaciones en
distintas materias. Todo con el objetivo de motivar a la comunidad en el
desafío de aprender y especialmente elevar la autoestima de los educa-
dores para que comprendan lo importante que es la labor que realizan.
Ya vamos a cumplir dos años con el programa, y lo mejor es ver lo fe-
lices que están todos los que se han capacitado y lo reencantados que
están con sus trabajos. Esos son los cambios que queremos ver. Tam-
bién queremos seguir creciendo en Chile con el “Desafio de Aprender”,
así que hacemos un llamado a los empresarios que quieran generar
un impacto en la educación de su comunidad a que se nos sumen.
Pensar que uno está trabajando y contribuyendo por el futuro de esos
niños es lo más motivante.

Through Desafío de Aprender, whose main benefactor is Evelyn Ergas,
we support alternative preschools pertaining to JUNJI, the National
Agency for Preschool Education. These preschools have little support,
and their educators have limited training, which means they enter
school at a disadvantage.
What’s our contribution, then? Take the best professionals in the field to
train these teams, no matter where the preschools are located, and give
them tools to turn them into true preschools that prepare kids for the
challenges they will face in primary school.
Desafío de Aprender is a full-scale educational intervention that
encompasses both content and motivation, working with educators,
children and families. The program consists of nineteen activities,
including sports clinics, a dental clinic, and thirteen training sessions
in different topics. The global aim is to motivate the community to take
on the challenge to learn, and especially to raise the self-esteem of the
educators, so that they realize how important their job is.
The program will soon complete its two-year anniversary. People have
come out of this training program content, with new purpose in what
they do. We want to continue growing Desafío de Aprender in Chile, and
so we ask all business people who want to make an impact in education
in their communities to join us, to help create equal opportunities for all
children in their regions from the start. Being able to help build a future
for these kids is what most motivates us.

Cuando Felipe Cubillos escuchó “Arriba los sueños”, la canción que es-
cribí a raíz del terremoto de 2010, me llamó inmediatamente para invi-
tarme a ser parte de Desafío Levantemos Chile y para que la cantara en
las inauguraciones que venían por delante. Acepté sumarme y, cuando
íbamos camino a la Isla Juan Fernández, nos dimos cuenta que, además
de reconstruir, había que desarrollar un área enfocada a levantar el
espíritu a la gente. Así nació otra punta de la estrella de Desafío, el área
de Deporte y Cultura.
Desde entonces comenzamos a organizar varias cosas. Lo primero, un
concierto en Santiago y otro en Juan Fernández para sensibilizar al país
sobre la situación de la isla, porque de verdad no estaban recibiendo
mucha ayuda. Fue muy bueno, resultó muy mediático y empezó para
nosotros, una etapa bastante potente. Ya había terminado la etapa de la
reconstrucción y el objetivo de Desafío era ayudar a la gente con herra-
mientas para levantarse buscando proyectos a largo plazo que cambia-
ran el país. Desde mi perspectiva la música era una pieza fundamental.
Las orquestas juveniles venían cumpliendo un rol clave en muchos
sectores, por lo que nos enfocamos en algo más novedoso, más popular:
en alianza con Yamaha creamos la campaña Do Re Mi, que consiste en
entregar kits musicales a escuelas normales y de educación diferencial
para que se formen bandas, consistentes en una batería, un kit de guita-
When Felipe Cubillos heard the song “Arriba los sueños,” the song I
wrote in the wake of the 2010 earthquake, he called me to invite me
to join Desafío Levantemos Chile, and to sing the song at upcoming
opening events. I accepted the invitation; the first performance was held
on Juan Fernández Island. That was when we realized that in addition to
rebuilding, we had to develop an area within Desafío that was focused
on raising people’s spirits. That was how another point of the star was
born, Desafío’s area for Sports and Culture.
After that moment we made a number of commitments. The first was
to organize one concert in Santiago and another in Juan Fernández to
raise awareness throughout Chile regarding the situation on the island,
because not a lot of aid was getting there. The event made a huge splash
in the media and signaled the start of a very fruitful period for us. The
reconstruction work had come to an end, and as Desafío’s objective was
to give people tools to get them back on their feet, we were looking for
long-term projects that would change the country. For me, music was
the key. Youth orchestras had been playing an important role all over
Chile for some time, so we tried something newer, more popular. We
teamed up with Yamaha to create the Do Re Mi campaign, which reaches
out to special education and teacher preparation schools and distributes
music kits consisting of an acoustic guitar, an electro acoustic guitar, a

Una vez que el modelo ya estaba funcionando organizamos el “Primer
Encuentro Nacional Do Re Mi” en Talca. Otro éxito. Había más de veinte
bandas, con una gran variedad de música, incluido folclore, rock, jazz o
balada. Fueron cinco horas donde los jóvenes tocaron como verdaderos
artistas arriba de un escenario. Un sueño cumplido para todos ellos y
que repetimos el año pasado en un segundo encuentro.
El objetivo ha sido cumplido con creces. Hemos logrado sacar a los
niños del ocio y darles una herramienta, como la música que, está pro-
bada, desarrolla múltiples habilidades además del trabajo en equipo y la
disciplina. Misma oportunidad para niños y jóvenes que hemos visto con
el fomento del deporte.
Por esto también ha sido un éxito otro de nuestros programas, ‘Desafío
Olímpico’, el que desarrollamos con el presidente del Comité Olímpico
de Chile, Neven Ilic, que da la oportunidad, a niños de sectores vulne-
rables, de entrenar en las mejores instalaciones de nuestro país, con
los mejores profesores, lo que a lo mejor les va a dar la posibilidad de
convertirse en seleccionados chilenos, en entrenadores o profesores de
educación física y, con eso, cambiar su vida.
Ya han pasado 300 niños por el programa y tenemos dos llamados por
las selecciones infantiles en sus disciplinas. ¿Qué más queremos? Que
estos y otros programas tengan una continuidad en el tiempo y que cada
vez podamos sumar a más niños y jóvenes. Son nuestro futuro.

idea is for the kit to stay in a room where kids can play with their bands,
which is how all pop groups get started. Once it was up and running, we
held the “First National Do Re Mi event in Talca. Another success. Over
twenty bands performed, a huge range of music –folk, rock, jazz, ballads.
For five hours the kids played like professional on the stage. A dream
came true for them. We repeated the event last year.
We went far beyond the goal we had set for ourselves. We got kids out of
their boredom and gave them a tool, music, which develops qualities like
teamwork and discipline, and improves self-esteem. It’s the same thing
we’ve seen with kids and sports –that’s the key behind the success of
another Desafío program called Desafío Olímpico, which we developed
with the president of Chile’s Olympic Committee, Neven Ilic. It’s a
ten-year program that gives kids from disadvantaged backgrounds the
chance to train at the country’s best facilities, with the best pros, which
might lead to a spot on the national team, or to careers as trainers or
Physical Education teachers. That could change their lives.
Three hundred kids have already come through the program and of
those participants, two have made it to nationals in their respective
sports. What more could we ask? That these and other similar programs
stand the test of time and that more and more kids join.
They are, after all, our future.

El área de salud surge desde la necesidad de dar respuesta a las
personas que sufren por la falta de atención médica oportuna y de
calidad, sobre todo en los sectores más vulnerables de nuestro país. Nos
preocupamos de ser un aporte para disminuir los índices de desigual-
dad en este ámbito, para que las personas no se queden sin atención
por no contar con los recursos económicos necesarios o las mismas
oportunidades de acceso.
Durante los últimos dos años en Desafío Levantemos Chile hemos tenido
la bendición de contar con gente muy comprometida a cargo del área,
entre ellos, médicos voluntarios que dieron origen a este gran desafío.
Así, nos hemos preocupado del proceso de levantar diagnósticos y foca-
lizar necesidades en distintos territorios para luego definir y establecer
la gestión más rápida y efectiva que se pueda coordinar entre quienes
necesitan la ayuda y quienes se interesen en ser parte de la solución
al problema. Con esto buscamos establecer modelos de gestión que
resulten efectivos y que logren ser altamente replicables, coordinando a
los colaboradores públicos y privados.
Entre nuestros principales logros se cuentan la realización de 37 opera-
The part of our organization devoted to health issues came about as
an effort to offer some kind of response to those people who suffer
from a lack of feasible quality medical care, particularly in Chile’s more
disadvantaged communities. Our goal is to help lower the level of
inequality that exists in this area, so that people are not left unattended
either because they lack the economic means or the opportunities for
accessing proper medical attention. Over the past two years, Desafío
Levantemos Chile has been blessed with a team of extremely dedicated
individuals in this area, among them the volunteer doctors who took
the first step in embarking on this huge challenge. We have focused our
efforts on diagnosing and pinpointing the different needs experienced
by different regions so as to define the most efficient and effective ways
to coordinate operations between those who need help and those who
want to be part of the solution to the problem. Our approach aims to
establish management models that are effective and highly replicable,
by coordinating with public and private partners.
One of our most important achievements to date has been the
implementation of 37 medical and dental operatives in different

han permitido, por ejemplo, construir e implementar el primer policlí-
nico multisectorial de Chile, al lado del campamento San Francisco en
San Bernardo. Gracias a este trabajo en equipo se brinda, de manera
gratuita, atención médica de especialidad en las distintas áreas de la
salud, sumando tecnologías de avanzada como la implementación de
redes de telemedicina.
De la misma forma este convenio permitió sentar las bases para res-
ponder de manera extraordinariamente rápida y efectiva a la tragedia
del incendio en Valparaíso. En menos de 60 días la unión de voluntades
logró levantar un centro de salud transitorio de más de 300 metros cua-
drados, emplazado en el cerro Las Cañas, lo que mejorará la atención en
salud de 9 mil personas.
Continuamos trabajando con mucha fuerza, porque sabemos que po-
demos hacer grandes cosas. Especialmente con esta alianza de salud
público-privada, a través de la cual se siguen realizando operativos
médicos de especialidad en distintas regiones del país con consultas,
exámenes e intervenciones quirúrgicas en hospitales públicos. Además,
equipos de médicos especialistas voluntarios de Clínica Las Condes,
liderados por el Dr. Alfredo Misraji, se sumaron al desafío de apoyar a
disminuir las “listas de espera de patologías No Auge” de los servicios
de salud pública. Como experiencia piloto lo estamos desarrollando en
la Región de La Araucanía y ha resultado un verdadero éxito.
parts of Chile. We have also established important collaborative work
alliances that have allowed us, for example, to build and launch the
first multisectorial clinic in Chile, next to the San Francisco shantytown
in the San Bernardo district of Santiago. Thanks to the teamwork that
made this initiative a reality, we are able to offer, free of cost, specialized
medical attention in different health service areas, incorporating cutting-
edge technologies such as the implementation of telemedicine networks.
Similarly, with these alliances we were able to establish the foundations
that allowed us to respond with extraordinary speed and efficiency
to the tragic fire in Valparaíso. In under 60 days, we summoned our
collective determination and know-how, and set up a temporary health
center in an area of over 300 square meters on Valparaíso’s Las Cañas
hill, which will help to improve the medical attention received by some
9,000 people.
We continue working at full speed, because we know we are capable of
great things. Especially with this public-private health alliance, through
which we continue to carry out specialized health operatives in different
parts of the country with checkups, exams and surgical procedures
carried out in a variety of public hospitals. In addition, volunteer medical
teams from Clínica Las Condes, led by Dr. Alfredo Misraji, joined us in
the challenge to reduce the waiting lists for diseases and conditions not
covered by the government’s Plan Auge program. At present, we are
developing a pilot experience of this program in the Araucanía region
and so far it has been a total success.

El voluntariado es un espíritu transversal dentro de Desafío. Un grupo
de gente soñadora y proactiva que está presente desde los inicios de
la fundación: desde el día uno, Felipe Cubillos, nuestro fundador, fue un
voluntario.
Como todos saben, con el tiempo esta fundación fue creciendo mucho,
abarcando diversos campos de acción y con esto también se fue incre-
mentando el número de voluntarios. Para rendir frutos debíamos profe-
sionalizar el Voluntariado. Así comenzamos a enseñar a los jóvenes que
se nos iban uniendo los conceptos que como fundación promovemos
–el emprendimiento y la sociedad civil– a través de un trabajo forma-
tivo vinculado completamente con el trabajo en terreno con los grupos
vulnerables. Despertar en ellos la vocación de servicio y el sentimiento
de pertenencia a nuestro país.
Hoy en día, uno de nuestros objetivos es tener equipos de trabajo por
cada lugar vulnerable que detectamos en las regiones que trabajamos,
impartiendo un calendario anual de actividades. En abril hacemos la
campaña de Huevitos de Pascua, luego la Campaña del Frío, en julio lle-
vamos a jóvenes a la Vivencia de Invierno (trabajos en terreno en algún
lugar apartado de Chile), preparamos el Día del Niño, el “Árbol de los
Sueños” en Navidad y cerramos con la Vivencia de Verano. Además, du-
rante todo el año tenemos “Noche Digna”, un trabajo de acompañamien-
Volunteerism is a spirit present throughout Desafío. A group of
proactive dreamers that have been part of the foundation from the start.
From day one, our founder Felipe Cubillos, was a volunteer.
As we all know, this foundation has grown considerably over time,
and has entered various fields of action. This, naturally, means our
volunteer network has also grown. To be truly productive, we had
to professionalize our volunteer efforts, and we began to impart to
Desafío’s newer, younger volunteers those concepts that we as a
foundation promote: entrepreneurship and civil society. We did this via a
training program in the field with our disadvantaged groups, to awaken a
vocation to serve and a sense of belonging here in Chile.
Today, one of our aims is to have teams at work in each and every of the
underprivileged places we discover in the regions we are involved in,
to implement an annual calendar of activities. In April we do an Easter
egg campaign; in May the Cold Campaign; in June we take the young
people on the Winter Experience (on-site work in a remote part of Chile);
and then we get ready for Children’s Day; at Christmas time we hold
our Tree of Dreams campaign and we close the year with the Summer
Experience. At another point in the year we hold a very important on-site
activity called Dignity Night, when we accompany people living on the
street, in Santiago and other cities. With all these projects this year we

año hemos activado más de 600 voluntarios en todo el país, quienes se
han puesto la camiseta de Desafío para salir a trabajar.
El segundo objetivo de Voluntariado tiene que ver con fomentar el
liderazgo en los jóvenes. Para esto impartimos el curso “Albatros”, donde
enseñamos sobre liderazgo y emprendimiento social, transmitiendo
las ideas de nuestros líderes, Felipe Cubillos y Joaquín Arnolds. Cree-
mos que la sociedad civil tiene la oportunidad de generar los cambios
que queremos ver reflejados en nuestro país. Buscamos fomentar el
emprendimiento en los grupos vulnerables, porque si nosotros entrega-
mos las herramientas que les faltan, ellos pueden construir su propia
historia y salir adelante, volviendo a ser protagonistas de sus vidas.
Por último, y nuestro tercer objetivo, es que los voluntarios sean per-
sonas comprometidas y sirvan de apoyo para la fundación en todas
sus áreas. Si alguna necesita gente para remover escombros, distribuir
alimentos, lo que sea, ahí están los voluntarios, listos para ayudar.
Nuestro mayor logro es ver cómo hoy la generación que empezó a volun-
tariar a fines del año 2010 y durante 2011, tiene un mensaje muy claro.
Todo lo que han aprendido sobre pobreza o la falta de oportunidades, ha
sido porque lo vieron en primera persona. Y el mejor fruto es que esos
voluntarios, ya sea desde nuestra fundación o desde sus trabajos o uni-
versidades, están ocupando el modelo que vieron en Desafío para cambiar
Chile. Queremos que esa cadena no se rompa nunca. Tenemos voluntarios
muy fuertes en regiones, pero nuestro desafío es que ellos salgan a con-
quistar a más personas para lograr que el cambio sea en todo el país.

The Volunteer division’s second goal is to encourage leadership among
young people, and we do this through a course called Albatross, which
teaches leadership and social entrepreneurship, ideas espoused by
our leaders, Felipe Cubillos and Joaquín Arnolds. We believe that
civil society has an opportunity to generate the changes we’d like to
see reflected in our country. We seek to promote enterprise among
more disadvantaged sectors, because if we can give them the tools
they need, just a little boost, they can build their own futures and
move forward on their own, and be protagonists of their own lives.
Finally, our third goal is to cultivate volunteers who are committed and
flexible enough to support the foundation in all its areas. If one area
needs people to build, remove rubble, distribute food, anything, our
volunteers should be ready to help.
Our greatest achievement is seeing the very clear message of the
generation that began as volunteers in late 2010 and during 2011.
Everything they learned about poverty or the lack of opportunity, they
learned by witnessing it firsthand. And our greatest satisfaction is
seeing that these volunteers, whether at our foundation or at their own
jobs or universities, are using the model they saw at Desafío to change
Chile. We don’t ever want to see that chain broken. We have volunteers
in regions that are very strong, but our challenge is to continue getting
out there and bringing more people in, so that change can happen all
over Chile.

El trabajo de operaciones parte desde el minuto de la validación de
un proyecto y termina con su entrega final e inauguración. Todo lo que
hay entremedio, desde conseguir fondos, estructurar el proyecto, sumar
profesionales, coordinar con las autoridades, supervisar construcciones
e implementarlas, es una tarea que cumplimos nosotros. En resumen,
hacer posible que los distintos actores conversen armónicamente para
concretar los desafíos que nos proponemos. Y para esto, en estos dos
años, conformamos un gran equipo de voluntarios desde Arica a Cabo
de Hornos, coordinados en las distintas etapas por Cristián O’Ryan, Mar-
tín Carvajal, Valentina Ortiz, Ignacia Arroyo y yo.
Si bien no es una punta de la estrella de Desafío Levantemos Chile, el
área de Operaciones es parte fundamental y se creó principalmente
para sortear el tremendo Desafío que fue concretar los 50 proyectos
del Banco de Chile. Esta fue una campaña en la cual la gente de todo
Chile podía soñar y concursar porque su sueño se hiciera realidad. De
todos los que se recibieron, un comité eligió 50 para realizarlos con el
apoyo del Banco de Chile. Cuando se lanzó el comercial en televisión, la
postulación fue explosiva, en pocos días teníamos cientos de proyectos
postulados. Llegaron más de mil, de los cuales elegimos 50 bajo pará-
metros bien claros en cuanto a impacto y grado de participación de la
comunidad. Ya el hecho de haber hecho soñar a la gente fue muy bueno,
The work we do in Operations begins from the minute a project gets
the green light and ends with its final delivery and inauguration.
Everything in between, which might include procuring funds, structuring
the project, bringing in professionals, coordinating with authorities,
supervising construction and overseeing implementation, is our
job. In short, we make it possible for the different actors involved to
work together harmoniously in order to meet the challenges of each
particular project. To make this possible, over the past two years we
have established a tremendous group of volunteers from Arica to Cabo
de Hornos, coordinated in different phases by Cristián O’Ryan, Martín
Carvajal, Valentina Ortiz, Ignacia Arroyo and me.
While it isn’t one of the points on the Desafío star, the Operations area
is essential and was initially started to handle the huge undertaking of
the 50 Desafíos para Chile, a campaign for which people all over Chile
were asked to dream and participate in the contest to see if their dream
might come true. Of all the applications we received a committee selected
fifty to support, with the aid of Banco de Chile. After we launched the
commercial on TV, the applications poured in. Within just a few days
we had hundreds of projects to assess. All told, we received over one
thousand applications, of which we selected fifty on the basis of very clear
parameters regarding impact and community participation. I think it was

La experiencia fue maravillosa. Creo que todo el equipo conoció lugares
y gente que jamás habría conocido si no hubiese sido por estos pro-
yectos. El altiplano, islas alejadas, Cabo de Hornos, poblados que ni nos
imaginábamos que existían en nuestro país. Y fue increíble sentir el
cariño y el apoyo hacia Desafío presente en todo Chile. En cada lugar en
donde estuvimos nacieron nuevos voluntarios, hasta hubo gente que a
partir del proyecto creó sus propios emprendimientos. ¡Fue notable!
Creo que dejamos sembrada la semilla de que todo es posible, que los
sueños se pueden lograr. La gente en general necesita un empujón, por
pequeño que sea, para salir adelante por sus propios medios. La rapidez
de Desafío, la tenacidad para tocar puertas de empresas, la irreverencia
de la mano con el empuje de la gente, fue una fórmula perfecta. Fue una
maravilla descubrir la calidad de personas trabajadoras y soñadoras
que hay en Chile. Conocimos a genios, inventores, a personas que han
dedicado toda su vida a ayudar a los demás en un total anonimato. Eso
nos da fuerza.
Hoy, el equipo de Operaciones se renueva. Queda Cristián O’Ryan a
cargo para seguir con más proyectos. Estamos en muchas cosas y hay
muchos voluntarios que sin meter nada de ruido están haciendo gran-
des cambios. Aunar toda esa energía e información para llegar a más
chilenos es ahora nuestro desafío.
an amazing start just to have given so many people something to dream
about, and I don’t doubt that in addition to the people whose projects were
chosen, many others moved forward just because we invited them to
participate. People realized that they could make things happen.
The experience was amazing. I think the entire team saw places and met
people they never would have were it not for these projects. The high
plains, distant islands, Cabo de Hornos, little hamlets that we didn’t even
know existed. And it was incredible to feel the affection and support for
Desafío all over Chile. Everywhere we went, new volunteers appeared.
There were even people who, thanks to the project, embarked on
initiatives of their own. It was remarkable.
I think we left the seed planted, the message that anything is possible,
that dreams can become reality. People often need a push, no matter
how small, to move ahead with their own means. Desafío’s speed,
the tenacity to reach out to businesses for support, our own boldness
combined with people’s perseverance was a perfect formula. It was
incredible to see the mettle of so many hardworking Chileans with
dreams. We met geniuses, inventors, people who have spent their entire
lives helping others in total anonymity. That gave and gives us strength.
At present, the Operations area is going through a renewal phase.
Cristián O’Ryan remains in charge of continuing with more projects. We
are involved in a lot of things and there are countless volunteers who
are making big changes with little noise. Summoning all that energy and
information to reach more Chileans is our challenge now.

Recuerdo claramente aquel domingo que, navegando por Internet, me
encontré con la campaña “50 Desafíos para Chile” del Desafío Levante-
mos Chile. Eran las 7 de la mañana y el proceso de postulación cerra-
ba a las 24 horas de ese día. Era la oportunidad perfecta para poder
cumplir el sueño que teníamos de crear un pequeño taller de lavandería
para nuestros alumnos, todos con discapacidad intelectual especial en
distintos grados. Yo sabía que si nos resultaba, iba a ser una gran noti-
cia para ellos, porque estos niños y jóvenes necesitan que los estimulen
y es urgente que dejen de ser una carga para sus familias, todas muy
pobres y vulnerables. De hecho, el 87 por ciento de nuestros 186 alum-
nos proviene de hogares pobres o de extrema pobreza. Sin pensarlo dos
veces, llené el formulario, me encomendé y lo mandé.
A las pocas semanas un grupo de Desafío, encabezado por Cristián
O’Ryan, tocó nuestra puerta y nos contó que habíamos sido selecciona-
dos, lo que implicaba financiamiento y apoyo para llevar a cabo nuestro
propósito. ¡No lo podíamos creer! Luego de un par de reuniones donde
acordamos lo que íbamos a hacer y cómo lo implementaríamos, nos
pusimos manos a la obra.
Lo primero fue arreglar lo que había, reparar la infraestructura, pintar
y luego habilitarlo con los nuevos equipos: tres lavadoras semiindus-
I can still recall quite vividly that Sunday when, while surfing the
Internet, I came across Desafío Levantemos Chile’s “50 Desafíos” (50
Challenges) campaign. It was 7 in the morning and the application
deadline was that evening at midnight. It was the perfect opportunity to
make our dream come true: to establish a small laundromat workshop
for our students, all of whom live with some degree of mental disability.
I knew that if this came through, it would be incredible news for them,
because these children and young people need to be stimulated and
motivated. It would also, I knew, be pivotal for their families, all of which
live with the precariousness of poverty. For them, it was of pressing
importance that their children achieve some level of self-sufficiency. To
be precise, 87% of our 186 students come from poor or extremely poor
households. Without giving it a second thought, I filled out the application
form, said a prayer or two, and sent it off. A few weeks later a group from
Desafío, headed up by Cristián O’Ryan, knocked on our door and told
us that we had been selected, which meant financing and support for
carrying out our proposal. We couldn’t believe it! After a few meetings to
decide exactly what we would do and how, we rolled up our sleeves and
got to work.
The first thing we did was repair the infrastructure, and then we painted

triales y una secadora, además de un sector de lavado manual. También
nos capacitaron en la organización y nos asesoraron financieramente
para poder echarlo a andar. Así, con un cóctel preparado por los niños
del taller de cocina, inauguramos la lavandería Sariri, que en aimara
significa, el viajero.
Hoy, esta lavandería se hace cargo de la ropa de los operarios de una
empresa eléctrica vecina, además de cobertores, sábanas y manteles
que nos mandan a lavar. Es poco, pero es un gran desafío para nuestros
alumnos quienes, siempre supervisados por un adulto, se pelean por
apretar los botones de las máquinas y desmanchar a mano las prendas.
Son niños muy entusiastas y les encanta participar, así que debemos
ir rotándolos, de manera que todos puedan hacerlo. Además, aquí se
limpia todo lo del taller de alimentación e incluso algunos pueden lavar
su propia ropa y de esta manera, colaborar con sus hogares.
Gracias a las ganancias de este emprendimiento hemos podido au-
toabastecernos de detergente, quitamanchas y todo lo necesario para
que funcione y, además, hemos mejorado un poquito la escuela. Com-
pramos plantas y algo de pintura para arreglar el patio que estaba muy
feo, compramos un barre hojas y un gran trapero. Cosas sencillas pero
que hasta ahora no habíamos podido tener. Esta lavandería llegó no
sólo a limpiar ropa, sino que también a remover la desesperanza. Trajo
consigo ilusión y oportunidades a toda una comunidad.
and outfitted it with new machines: three semi-industrial washing
machines and a dryer, as well as an area for hand washing. They also
gave us training and financial assessment so that we could get the
project off the ground. And so, with a cocktail party prepared by the
students at the cooking school, we inaugurated our laundromat and
christened it Sariri, which means “traveler” in Aimara.
At present, this laundromat handles washing the uniforms of the workers
at a nearby electrical company, as well as all the blankets and tablecloths
that come our way. It isn’t a lot, but it represents a great challenge for our
students who, always under the supervision, fight to press the buttons on
the machines and take the stains out of the garments. They are terribly
enthusiastic and adore participating, so we have to rotate them in order
to give everyone a chance to pitch in. We also wash everything that comes
from the food service workshop, and some students even wash their own
clothes here, which allows them to make a contribution at home.
Thanks to the earnings, we have become self-sufficient enough to buy
everything we need to be operational. We have also been able to make
small improvements to the school. We bought plants and a bit of paint
to spruce up the patio. We bought a rake and a huge mop simple things
that we hadn’t been able to buy before. This laundromat came into being
not just to clean clothes but to banish hopelessness. It brought optimism
and opportunity to an entire community.

“It was April 1 of this year. Though the experts had been warning for some time that an earthquake was imminent, I don’t
think anyone was prepared. You never are. At Desafío, the catastrophe struck just as we were focusing on important
projects in each of our areas. We never imagined something like this would happen again so soon in Chile: an earthquake
registering over 8.2 on the Richter scale. Owing to the magnitude of the disaster and the alarm it caused, we reacted
rapidly and within 48 hours we had a team traveling up and down the disaster zone, surveying and determining priorities—
urgent needs first, everything else after”.
EMERGENCIA SOLIDARIA / emergency solidarity

Lo primero fue coordinar el envío de artículos de primera necesi-
dad. El equipo de voluntarios de Desafío de Iquique, con ayuda desde
Santiago, repartió agua, alimentos no perecibles y artículos de higiene
a los principales damnificados. Pero luego de recorrer un poco más
a fondo la zona nos dimos cuenta que, al igual que en el terremoto
de 2010, había una pérdida importante entre los pescadores, espe-
cialmente los de Caleta Riquelme, quienes habían perdido muchos de
sus botes y motores. Así, como lo hicimos en 2010 guiados por Felipe
Cubillos, nuestra primera cruzada en el norte fue ir en su ayuda.
Hablamos con nuestro fiel aliado, el Banco de Chile, quienes se suma-
ron inmediatamente para iniciar juntos la campaña “Levantemos el
Norte”. Gracias a su aporte y compromiso, pudimos difundir las nece-
sidades de las zonas afectadas en todos los medios y conseguir más
recursos. Todo esto nos permitió responder rápidamente con motores
fuera de borda para los pescadores. El terremoto fue un martes en
la noche y, cinco días después, pudimos llegar con 36 motores para
entregarlos de forma oficial en un día muy bonito en el muelle de la
caleta. Fue gracias a los recursos económicos levantados entre nues-
tra red de contactos y al apoyo de las empresas, especialmente las de
transporte, quienes por aire y tierra llevaron los motores a destino.
The first thing we did was coordinating the delivery of basic survival
items. With help from Santiago, the Desafío volunteer team in Iquique
distributed water, nonperishable food, and personal hygiene items to
those most directly affected. After surveying the area more carefully,
however, we realized that just like the 2010 earthquake, the fishermen
had sustained serious damages and loss, particularly at the Riquelme
fishing cove in the center of Iquique. Most of the fishermen there lost their
boats and motors. And so, just as we did in 2010, with Felipe Cubillos
leading us, we embarked on our first crusade in the north to aid them.
We spoke with our loyal ally, Banco de Chile, and together we began the
Levantemos el Norte drive. Thanks to their support and engagement
we were able to begin a multi-media publicity campaign publicizing
what the affected areas needed, enabling us to gather more support.
This in turn meant that we were quickly able to respond with outboard
motors. The earthquake occurred on a Tuesday night and five days later
we arrived with 36 motors, which passed hands in an official ceremony
on a beautiful day in the cove. We owed it all to the economic resources
we raised through our network of contacts and to the support of many
companies, particularly those in transportation, who by land and air
brought the motors to their destinations in such a short lapse of time.

No fue todo. Seguimos recorriendo en forma más amplia el área
afectada y descubrimos una segunda caleta como a 40 kilómetros de
Iquique, Caleta Caramucho. La componían 30 familias que se estaban
organizando para salir adelante pues también habían perdido parte
importante de sus botes y, con ello, su fuente de ingresos. También
decidimos apoyarlos, para lo cual desarrollamos junto al Banco de
Chile una intervención urbana afuera de su casa matriz, en el Paseo
Ahumada de Santiago, instalando un bote destrozado por el tsunami
de 2010 con el propósito de acercar el terremoto a las personas de
la capital. Así, a la gente de Caramucho también pudimos entregar-
les motores, aunque lo más bonito surgió cuando los pescadores del
Maule, los mismos pescadores del sur que habíamos ayudado en 2010,
se ofrecieron para ir a enseñarles a reparar sus botes, tal como lo
habían aprendido ellos. El ambiente de solidaridad que se generó fue
maravilloso, y es el mejor ejemplo de que esta cadena es continua: una
persona que recibe ayuda, siempre ayuda a otra.
VOLVER A CLASES
El otro frente que abordamos fue el de los emprendedores. La in-
formación indicaba que había muchos de ellos que también habían
That wasn’t all. We continued to comb the area, looking more broadly,
and discovered a second fishing cove around forty kilometers from
Iquique, called Caramucho. There were about thirty families there,
organizing and pulling things together because they had lost most of
their boats and hence their source of income. We decided to support
them, and in partnership with Banco de Chile we staged a public
intervention outside the bank’s headquarters in the Paseo Ahumada
in Santiago, installing the wreck of a fishing boat which had been
destroyed in the 2010 tsunami, with the aim of impressing on the people
living in the capital what the effect of that earthquake had been. We
also gave them motors but the most wonderful thing was when the
fishermen from the Maule region, the same fishermen from the South
who we had helped in 2010, learned what was going on and offered to
come and show them how to repair their vessels. Just as others had
done with them. The atmosphere of solidarity generated there was
incredible, and it shows that this chain is still going strong: one person
receives help, and then helps the next person who needs it.
Back to school
The other battlefront we took on was with the entrepreneurs. Many of

región, como en los poblados de Huara y Pozo Almonte, donde había

sino también en escuelas que se habían declarado inhabitables: las
clases estaban suspendidas.
Conocimos la Escuela Baquedano y el Liceo de Pozo Almonte y nuestro
siguiente desafío fue que los primeros días de mayo los niños volvieran
a clases. En tiempo récord reparamos pisos, cielos y vigas, con lo que
logramos nuestra meta, nuevamente gracias al trabajo en conjunto con
el Banco de Chile. En ambos establecimientos se levantó la prohibición
de entrar por riesgo de derrumbes y los niños regresaron a estudiar.
Lo interesante y maravilloso de esta gran cadena de solidaridad que
hemos ido formando desde la fundación de Desafío Levantemos Chile,
es que a medida que vamos captando necesidades, la comunidad
se nos va sumando. Y a través de su ayuda y compromiso, vamos
logrando los objetivos que nos proponemos para levantar Chile ante
las adversidades, con soluciones concretas, de calidad y en el menor
tiempo posible.

contributions, we were able to replace the tools of fifty people who
were then able to reopen their small businesses. We also took stock of
the damage done to the interior of the region, in towns like Huara and
Pozo Almonte, where there was far more structural damage, not just
in homes but in schools that had been declared uninhabitable, which
meant classes had been suspended indefinitely.
We visited Escuela Baquedano and the Pozo Almonte public school,
and our next challenge was to get the kids back to school by the first
week of May. In record time, once again, we repaired walls, ceilings and
beams, and reached our goal, thanks to our partnership with Banco de
Chile. At both schools, the entrance ban due to building collapse was
lifted and the kids went back to work. The fascinating thing about this
massive chain of solidarity that we have established since founding
Fundación Desafío Levantemos Chile is that as we become more and
more aware of needs, more and more members of the community join
us. And through their aid and commitment, we’ve been able to fulfill
the goals we have set for ourselves, to pull Chile out of adversity with
solutions that are concrete, well-formulated, and carried out as quickly
as possible.

Cuando llegó Desafío Levantemos Chile después del terremoto, el pa-
norama en la Caleta Riquelme donde yo trabajo era desolador. Estaban
todas las embarcaciones dañadas, unas arriba de otras. Había como 70
botes que no se podían usar y habíamos perdido los motores.
Todos los pescadores y buzos que trabajamos en la caleta estábamos
impactados, tratando de salvar lo que se podía. Ellos llegaron, se reu-
nieron con representantes de los tres sindicatos para conocer bien los
daños y luego nos dieron la gran noticia de que iban a ayudarnos. Que
iban a trabajar en la caleta con nosotros.
Nunca me voy a olvidar su esfuerzo. En cinco días nos entregaron mo-
tores para las embarcaciones porque querían lograr que saliéramos a
trabajar para Semana Santa, días de las mejores ventas. Nos organiza-
mos de manera que todos pudieran hacerlo. Primero salían unos grupos
a pescar, volvían, se bajaban y al mismo mismo bote luego se subía
otro grupo de compañeros. Yo le doy gracias a Dios en nombre mío y de
todos en la caleta, la ayuda y el apoyo que Desafío nos entregó.
Desde el comienzo todo fue muy emotivo. La noche del terremoto, a las
tres de la mañana, yo fui a la caleta para ver cómo estaba el panorama y
no lo podía creer. Me acordé de aquello que los hombres también lloran.
Es verdad. Luego, cuando Desafío llegó con los motores, nuevamente
lloré, pero esa vez de emoción y por la alegría que tenía. Nunca se me va
a olvidar esa imagen de compatriotas ayudándose unos a otros.
When Desafío Levantemos Chile arrived after the earthquake, the
scene at the Riquelme fishing cove, where I work, was devastating. All
the boats had been damaged and were piled up, one atop the other.
There were about seventy that were unusable, having lost their motors.
All the fishermen and divers who work at the cove were shocked; we
just tried to save whatever we could. The people from Desafío arrived,
met with representatives of the three unions here, to get a good idea of
the damage and then they gave us the incredible news that they were
going to help us. They were going to work in the cove with us.
I will never forget what they did. In five days they gave us motors for
our boats because they wanted to get us out on the water by Holy
Week, which is when we do the most business. We organized things
so that everybody could get a chance. First a few groups went out to
fish, then they came back, got out, and let another group of guys in. I
thank God on behalf of everyone in the cove, including myself, for the
help and support that Desafío gave us. From the beginning, it was all
so touching. The night of the earthquake, at three in the morning, I
went out to the cove to see how things looked and I couldn’t believe my
eyes. There’s a saying about how men cry, too, and it’s true. Then, when
Desafío arrived with the motors, I cried again, but from the emotion
and joy I felt. I will never forget that image of compatriots helping one
another, side by side.

Cuando uno vive una experiencia tan dolorosa como la que nosotros
vivimos con el terremoto de febrero de 2010, es difícil levantarse solo.
Quedas nublado, no sabes qué hacer, por dónde empezar... Por eso, tras
el terremoto de este año en el norte, con solo pensar que había gente
que estaba pasando por lo mismo, no me podía quedar tranquilo. Tenía
ganas de ir a ayudar, tal como nos habían ayudado a nosotros.
Estaba en eso cuando la gente de Desafío nos contactó para ver la posi-
bilidad de que fuéramos a trabajar con nuestros colegas del norte en la
reparación de sus botes, como Felipe Cubillos lo había hecho con noso-
tros en 2010. Acepté de inmediato, arreglaron el viaje y fuimos directo a
la Caleta Caramucho. Cuando les contamos que éramos del Maule, ¡no lo
podían creer! Se volvieron locos de felicidad.
Vivimos con ellos ocho días, trabajábamos harto y descansábamos poco.
Fue una experiencia súper bonita, nos volvimos felices. Nos gustaría
regresar porque dejamos muy buenos amigos allá. Hemos seguido en
contacto y les ha ido bien, están trabajando y ya tienen cómo ganarse el
pan de cada día. Incluso entre nosotros, en el sindicato de pescadores,
también juntamos plata y les llevamos equipaje para las embarcaciones
como redes, un tirador y chalecos salvavidas, entre varias cosas. En
total se arreglaron cinco de los ocho botes que había, pero ahora ellos
ya saben cómo reparar el resto.
Nosotros vivimos lo mismo y que llegue alguien a la caleta y te diga
‘venimos a ayudarte’, es lo más hermoso que uno puede recibir.
When one goes through an experience as horrific as what we went
through on 27 February 2010, with the earthquake, it is hard to pick
yourself up. You don’t know what to do, where to start. That’s why after
the earthquake that struck northern Chile this year, just thinking that
other people were going through what we had been through, I couldn’t
sit still. I had to go and help, just as others had helped us.
That was what I was feeling when Desafío contacted us to see if we
might be able to work with the fishermen up north and show them how
to repair their boats, just as Felipe Cubillos had done with us in 2010.
We went directly to Caramucho fishing cove and when we told them that
we were from Maule, they couldn’t believe it! They practically jumped for
joy, and went running to find the other local fishermen.
We stayed with them for eight days, working a lot and resting very little.
It was a really beautiful experience; we went home happy. We’d love to
go back because we left some good friends behind there. We’ve stayed
in touch and they’ve been all right, they’re working and they have what
they need to earn their daily bread. Even amongst ourselves, at our
fishermen’s union, we raised money and brought them supplies for their
boats, like nets and lifejackets, among other things. All told, five of the
eight boats were fixed, but now they know how to repair the rest.
We went through the same thing, and we know that when someone
arrives at the cove and says “we’ve come to help,” those are the most
beautiful words a person can hear.

Tengo un negocio al lado del casino de Iquique, en donde vendo sales
aromáticas que yo misma hago en mi taller. Compro sales, las tiño y le
agrego esencias, para que la gente las compre para sus baños o para
decorar sus casas. Llevo cinco años en el negocio y en el verano me va
muy bien, a la gente le gusta.
Con el terremoto, el negocio literalmente quebró. Nosotros trabajamos
con botellas de vidrio y todas terminaron rotas en el suelo. Lo poco que
había quedado bueno, se mojó después con el agua que entró por el
tsunami y, para rematar, como se cortó la luz, nos quedamos sin alarma
y nos robaron lo que podríamos haber salvado.
Pero yo sabía que mis años de esfuerzo no se podían borrar de un día
para otro. Por suerte tenía guardadas en mi taller las sales que había
comprado un mes antes del terremoto y solo me faltaban las esencias
para volver a empezar. Era lo que yo más quería… volver a empezar.
Ahí apareció Desafío Levantemos Chile en mi vida, quienes con una
pequeña ayuda hicieron que nos paráramos de nuevo. Me consiguie-
ron esencias de aromaterapia con olor a flores, frutas y hierbas, y me
las trajeron especialmente desde Santiago. Gracias a ellos pude salir
adelante y rearmar mi negocio; volver a trabajar en el taller. Empezar de
cero cuesta mucho y afortunadamente Desafío estaba ahí. Les agradez-
co con el alma, porque en un minuto lo pasamos súper mal, pero ahora
mi negocio ya está funcionando de nuevo.
I have a little business next to the Iquique casino where I sell aromatic
salts that I put together in my workshop. I buy salts, dye them and then
add essences. People buy them for their bathrooms or to decorate their
homes. I’ve been doing this for five years, and in summer I do very well,
people like what I sell.
With the earthquake, my business literally fell to pieces. We work with
glass bottles and every last one ended up on the floor, shattered. What
little survived was waterlogged from the tsunami. As if that weren’t
enough, since the electricity went out, our alarm went out, too, and people
came in and stole whatever we might have been able to salvage.
Yet, I knew that all those years of hard work weren’t going to just
disappear into thin air overnight. Luckily, a month before the earthquake
I had bought salts that I had stored in my workshop. They were still there.
All I needed to start over were my essences. That’s what I wanted...to
start over. And that was when Desafío Levantemos Chile arrived in my
life. With a tiny bit of assistance they helped us back on our feet. They
located aromatherapy essences with flower, fruit and herbal scents, and
they brought them to me straight from Santiago. Thanks to them I was
able to push forward and rebuild my business; go back to my workshop.
Starting over is very hard, but fortunately Desafío was there. And I thank
them from the bottom of my heart, because we had a very hard time
there for a while, but now my business is as good as new.

En la escuela atendemos a 274 alumnos de Pozo Almonte. Es una
escuela municipal que está dentro de una villa militar, por lo que tra-
bajamos hijos de funcionarios militares y personas civiles. Hasta antes
del terremoto de abril, los niños asistían a clases en jornada completa,
por lo que, además, recibían el beneficio de la alimentación escolar.
Digo hasta antes del terremoto pues, con éste, nuestra escuela se vio
bastante afectada. Perdimos gran parte de la infraestructura y, por el
peligro de nuevos derrumbes, tuvimos que suspender las clases.
En su recorrido por la zona afectada, los voluntarios de Desafío Levan-
temos Chile llegaron a nuestra escuela y rápidamente coordinaron un
plan de emergencia: habilitar cinco aulas para retomar las clases lo
antes posible.
Además se hicieron diversas reparaciones en los cielos y pusieron dos
baterías de baños modulares. Los niños, después de un mes y medio
sin clases, podían volver a entrar a su colegio.
Como la mayoría de nuestros alumnos proviene de familias donde
ambos padres trabajan el día completo, gracias a la ayuda de Desafío
no solo los niños se vieron beneficiados y retomaron su vida normal,
sino toda la comunidad. Los padres pudieron volver a sus labores con
la tranquilidad de saber que sus hijos nuevamente están en el colegio
y reciben su alimentación. Cuando retomamos las clases, sentí la
esperanza de esos papás. Estaban muy agradecidos.
At Fuerte Baquedano primary school we have 274 students from
Pozo Almonte. This is a local public school inside a military village, and
our students are children of military employees and civilians. Up until
the earthquake in April the children attended a full day of classes and
received the benefit of school meals, as well. I say “before the earthquake”
because our school was quite affected by what happened. We lost a
significant part of our infrastructure and because of this, and the danger
that the building might collapse further, we had to suspend classes.
As they worked their way through the region, the Desafío Levantemos
Chile volunteers arrived at our school and they quickly coordinated
an emergency plan to equip five classrooms, so that we could resume
school as soon as possible. They also made repairs to the parts of the
ceiling that had caved in, removed the roof and installed new beams and
a polycarbonate roof and set up two rows of modular bathrooms. After a
month and a half, the kids were finally able to return to school.
Since most of our students come from families where both parents work
full time, Desafío’s assistance meant that it wasn’t just the kids who
benefitted and got back to normal life—the whole community was able
to get back to normal. Parents were able to go back to work with the
peace of mind brought by knowing that their kids were back in school,
receiving their meals. When we reopened the school, the feeling of hope
among the parents was palpable. They were so grateful.

Colchane es un pueblo ubicado a casi 4.000 metros de altura, muy
cerca de la frontera con Bolivia. El clima es extremo, su población es
principalmente aimara y sus condiciones de vida muy adversas: están
muy lejos de toda civilización, la comunicación es escasa y difícil y la
energía eléctrica, un bien muy escaso. De hecho, el pueblo funciona con
un motor diesel que solo ofrece un par de horas de luz al día. En ese
contexto estudiaban mis 8 alumnos de la Escuela Básica Pisiga Choque
hasta que llegaron voluntarios de Desafío a visitarnos. Fue una enorme
sorpresa verlos aparecer, porque aquí no vienen muchos visitantes y,
menos, ofreciendo ayuda.
Desde entonces todo cambió y de manera muy rápida. Ellos hicieron un
levantamiento de nuestras necesidades y concluyeron que la mejor ma-
nera de colaborar con la comunidad era instalando más paneles solares
para generar energía, porque con el que teníamos sólo nos abastecía-
mos por una hora diaria. Y como si eso fuera poco, además íbamos a
tener agua caliente, un lujo, considerando el frío que hace en el sector.
Colchane is a village located at an altitude of almost 4,000 meters
above sea level, very close to the Bolivian border. The climate is extreme,
and the local population is mostly indigenous Aimará. The everyday
living conditions are adverse, to say the least: the village is far from
what many of us would call civilization, the lines of communication are
few and far between, and electricity is a precious commodity generated
by a diesel engine that gives residents just a couple of hours of light a
day. It was in this context that my eight students at the Pisiga Choque
Elementary School lived and studied until volunteers from Desafío came
to pay us a visit. It was a huge surprise to see them when they turned
up, because we don’t get a lot of visitors here, much less visitors offering
help. From that moment on, everything changed, and quickly. The people
from Desafío assessed what our needs were and concluded that the best
way to collaborate with our community was by installing solar panels
to generate energy. In addition, this new system would also give us hot
water, a luxury when you consider the very cold weather we have here.

La posibilidad de contar con luz eléctrica alumbró nuestra vida y se
tradujo en muchas cosas: seguridad para la comunidad, integración, una
ventana al mundo y muchas oportunidades para los niños. Gracias a ella
pude estudiar, investigar y prepararme mejor para hacer mis clases bajo
el concepto de multigrado, es decir, un solo docente atiende a todos los
niveles, los que en este caso, van de primero a sexto básico.
Lo paradójico es que el colegio contaba con algunas herramientas au-
diovisuales como televisores y proyectores, pero no teníamos la energía
para poder usarlos. Hoy son un instrumento fundamental de trabajo, los
niños tienen acceso a información, están al tanto de lo que pasa en su
país y el mundo. Sin duda, todo esto ayuda a la formación de los alum-
nos, quienes hoy tienen más y mejores contenidos de estudio.
Ellos están más motivados e interesados en aprender, más aún, cuando
el premio que obtienen por su buena conducta, es una buena ducha
de agua caliente. La energía eléctrica llegó a iluminar su entorno, sus
mentes y sus corazones.
The prospect of having electricity lit up our lives, and opened the door to
so many other things: security for the community, integration, a window
onto the world, opportunities for the children. This change allowed me
to do a better job of studying, researching, and preparing for my classes,
which are conducted in a multigrade format-in other words, a single
teacher handles students at all different grade levels. In my case, the
students range from first to sixth graders. Ironically enough, the school
already had some audiovisual tools like televisions and projectors,
but we didn’t have the electricity needed to use them. Now, they are
essential to our everyday work at school the kids now have access to
information, they know what is happening around the world. All of this
is a tremendous boost to the education of our children, who now have
more and better content to study and learn from. Our students are now
more motivated, more engaged –especially now that the reward for good
behavior is a wonderful warm shower. Electricity came and lit up their
environment– and their hearts and minds, too.

Tuvieron que pasar casi 20 años para cumplir el sueño de que el patio
de nuestro jardín infantil pudiera ser un espacio seguro y amigable, que
se sumara a la tarea de educar y verlos crecer en un ambiente sano y
bonito. Este jardín, inserto en el sector norte de Antofagasta y donde la
delincuencia y los vicios son pan de cada día, pertenece a Fundación
Integra, que tiene como misión acoger a pequeños cuyas familias están
en situación de pobreza y vulnerabilidad. Atendemos a 205 menores, y
hasta antes que Desafío viniera a visitarnos, éste era de tierra y piedra,
lo que aumentaba los riesgos de accidentes y era un importante foco de
infecciones y enfermedades. Los niños no podían jugar de forma saluda-
ble y debíamos evitar la actividad física o las rutinas al aire libre.
Todo cambió cuando una apoderada postuló a los “50 Desafíos para
Chile” y al poco tiempo nos vinieron a visitar. Luego de revisar el lugar y
escuchar nuestras inquietudes, se pusieron en contacto con Fundación
Mi Parque, quienes, además de mejorar áreas verdes, se preocupan de
hacerlo de manera inclusiva con los beneficiados. Así, durante varios
meses hicimos reuniones y talleres con ellos, trabajamos en equipo y
cada uno expuso sus ideas. En este proceso participaron tías, auxiliares,
asistentes de administración y miembros de Integra.
Una vez que definimos bien y en conjunto lo que íbamos a hacer, nos
pusimos manos a la obra. Repartimos volantes entre los apoderados y
It took twenty years to make our dream come true: to transform our
nursery school courtyard into a safe, welcoming area that could help
in the task of educating and caring for them in an inviting, healthy
environment. This preschool, located in the northern sector of the city
of Antofagasta, where crime and illicit activities are everyday facts of
life, belongs to the Fundación Integra, whose mission is to attend to
young children from families living with poverty and the vulnerability
that comes with it. We look after 205 young children and until Desafío
came to see us, the space was all dirt and rocks, which made it ripe for
accidents, infections and illnesses of all types. There was no way for the
children to play safely here, and so we had to avoid physical activity as
well as all outdoor activities.
Everything changed when one of our parents applied to the “50 Desafíos
para Chile” (50 Challenges) program. The people from Desafío came,
and after inspecting the school and listening to our concerns, they got
in touch with Fundación Mi Parque, an association focused on improving
green areas that collaborates inclusively with the communities. For
several months we had seminars and meetings with them, working as a
team where individuals could express his or her ideas. A wide range of
people including teachers, teachers’ aides, administrative assistants and
members of Integra participated in this process.
