3. The society was founded in 1819 by former soldiers from Lucerne who, following the collapse of the Mediation Government in
1814, were reassigned to protect the newly constituted authority at the town gates. These lively chaps decided to celebrate the
citizens' revolt with a masked ball. The first ball took place at the old Hotel Rössli on Mühleplatz in the winter of 1815/16.

6. The wearing of masks in Lucerne is a tradition that goes back centuries. The town's Maskenlieb haber-Gesellschaft (MLG –
Society of Mask Devotees) came into being over 180 years ago with the aim of preserving and promoting the custom.

9. Strange characters with fantastic masks and costumes parade along the narrow streets while groups of carnival musicians
(“Guggenmusigen”) blow their instruments in joyful cacophony and thousands of bizarrely clad people dance away the spirits of
winter.
