4. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO USE “A” IN FRONT OF A PERSON’S
NAME OR ÉL, ELLA, UD., ELLOS, ELLAS, UDS.?
The reason is really quite simple.
You have to use the “A” because there are 3 pronouns that go with “LE” (él,
ella, Ud.) and there are 3 pronouns that go with “LES” (ellos, ellas,
Uds.) Therefore in order to distinguish which of these 3 people are being
talked about, you use the “A” to clarify it.
EXAMPLE:
Le gusta el fútbol.
This can mean: He likes soccer.
She likes soccer.
You (polite form) like soccer.
SO:
You have to clarify with an “A” and either the person’s name or a
pronoun that refers to it.
A él, le gusta el fútbol.
A Luis le gusta el fútbol.
A ella le gusta el fútbol.
A Luisa le gusta el fútbol.
A Ud. Le gusta el fútbol.
