Summer is here and everything around is about water and sun , but we have to be careful and take
special care of our children when they are exposed to the sun.
SAFETY TIPS when exposed to the SUN!
* Avoid exposure to the sun between hours from 10am to 4pm.
At this time of the day the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) strength is at its peak
and can cause serious skin burns, even a high risk of cancer.
* Protect your children skin by using a sunblock with an SPF rating of 50.
The sunblock needs to be applied a half hour before exposure to sun.
It takes that time for the skin to absorbe the sunblock to start working.
* When using sunblock or sunscreen DON’T FORGET TO COVER all the areas exposed to the
sun. One very important thing that people forget is that the scalp can get seriously burned
also, cover your child’s head with a hat, if not, apply sunscreen on his scalp to protect it.
* If you are going to the beach DON’T FORGET THE UMBRELLA
It’s always a good idea to take a break from the sun and let the kids play under the shade.
* EVERY TWO HOURS re-apply sunblock and be sure to do it more frequently
if they are going in and out from the water.
* REMEMBER THAT CHILDREN UNDER 1 YEAR OLD SHOULD NOT BE EXPOSED DIRECTLY
TO THE SUN !They can be easily dehydrated or suffer from overheating.
El verano ya esta aquí y todo alrededor es sol y agua, pero debemos ser cuidadosos y poner especial aten-
ción en nuestro hijos cuando están expuestos al sol.
CONSEJOS DE SEGURIDAD bajo el sol!
 Evite las horas entre las 10 am y 4 pm porque los rayos ultravioletas están al máximo y pueden
causar serias quemaduras, e incluso incrementar el riesgo de cancer.
 Proteja a su hijo con un bloqueador solar de SPF 50. Debe ponerle el bloqueador media hora antes
para que la piel tenga tiempo de abosorverlo.
 No se olvide de proteger todas las áreas del cuerpo, incluso el cuero cabelludo si su hijo no está utilizando un sombrero.
 No se olvide de la SOMBRILLA DE PLAYA, siempre es bueno tomarse un descanso del sol y jugar en la sombra.
 Cada dos horas re-aplique el bloqueador, mas aún si los niños están entrando y saliendo del agua.
 Y recuerde que LOS NIÑOS MENORES DE 1 AÑO no deben ser expuestos al sol directo, ya que pueden fácilmente
deshidratarse e incluso sufrir un sobre calentamiento en sus cuerpos.

2. If you have a pool at home “Water Safety rules” are very important :
In Florida, homeowners are not required to install a fence for the pool. However, the law states
that any doors and windows that open out to the pool must be equipped with an exit alarm to
warn residents if the door has been opened. All doors that provide direct access to the pool
must be fitted with a self-closing and self-latching device.
Removable mesh safety barriers are a good option when you have a young child at home.
These safety fences are manufactured in heights of 48 inches and 60 inches and consist of latching panels and are placed
at least 20 inches from the pool. The maximum opening between the bottom of the pool deck and the fence is one inch.
Installation requires that holes be drilled into the patio deck and the vertical posts slide into the holes. These fences can be
removed when the pool is in use and replaced later.
American Red Cross reminds parents of young children about the importance of teaching them to swim:
- Drowning is the # 1 cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in Florida.
- 75% of victims are ages 12 to 25 month old.
- 65% drown in the family pool
- 33% drown in a neighbor’s or relative’s pool
- 77% were missing for less than 5 minutes
Even the most caring and vigilant parent can be affected by a drowning or near drowning. To prepare yourself for an
emergency, learn resuscitation and first aid techniques. Performing first aid at the scene may increase the child's chance
of recovery or even save a life.

3. WE HAD A GREAT TIME AT FAMILY CAFÉ 2011
We provided 8 scholarships for families for attending the Family Café
Event this year, the most important event for families of people with
disabilities in Florida.
Our families from all around Florida, had a great time at the
“ E arly Steps, Early Wishes event ”
and enjoyed several educational workshops and presentations.
We also collected some nice stories, from parents who are happy and excited
about everything they and their kids are learning through the Early Steps Services.
The Family Café is a yearly event that ’ s worthy to participate, it ’ s not only wonderful information and education,
but the opportunity to meet other families that are crossing your same situation and can give advise and become friends while
helping you along the way, overcoming challenges, and enjoying the blessing of having a child with special needs.

LA PASAMOS MUY BIEN EN EL FAMILY CAFÉ
Este año enviamos 8 familias al Family Café, el evento más importante
para familias de personas con discapacidades en la Florida.
Nuestras familias alrededor de Florida se divirtieron y aprendieron mucho
en nuestro taller “ Early Steps, Early Wishes ” además de haber disfrutado varias
presentaciones y talleres.
También recolectamos lindas historias de nuestras familias para compartir,
acerca de todo lo que sus hijos están aprendiendo en Early Steps.
El Family Café es un evento en el cual vale la pena participar,
no sólo hay excelente información y educación, también la
oportunidad de conocer otras familias que estan cruzando su misma
situación y pueden darle consejos además de volverse amigos con
quienes compartir el largo camino colmado de retos, alegrías
y bendición de tener un hijo con necesidades especiales.

Dear Friends,
It’s time for me to confess. I get summer fever…and quite a severe case! Yes, I’m very aware that spring
fever is more common but there is just something about the beauty of our state that makes it so difficult
sometimes to resist the water, sun, sand, picnics, and all the other things that define summer in Florida.
Now please don’t get me wrong. I am more committed than ever in my passion for families in Florida’s Early
Steps system, but I am making more of an effort to prioritize the weekends to allow more time for play and a
little less time for dusting and cleaning bathrooms.
If you are not sure of fun family activities in your community this summer, your Early Steps Service
Coordinator or Family Resource Specialist can give you several options planned throughout the summer.
Whether you are interested in story telling at your public library, events at your community pool, or flying kites
at a local park, I am confident there will be activities that your family will love.
So…here’s my challenge. The next time household chores are piling up and laundry is on the agenda all day,
consider putting it off, just for a day. Those are the memories our children will remember! Just be careful.
Summer fever might be contagious! Happy summer!

Queridos Amigos, Verano 2011
Es hora de que me confiese. ¡Tengo la fiebre de verano...y un caso bastante grave! Sí, estoy muy consciente
de que la fiebre de primavera es más común, pero hay algo en la belleza de nuestro estado que hace tan
difícil a veces resistir el agua, el sol, la playa, las excursiones, y todas las otras cosas que definen el verano
en Florida. Ahora por favor, no me malinterpreten. Estoy más comprometida que nunca con las familias en el
sistema de Early Steps de la Florida, pero estoy haciendo un mayor esfuerzo para dar prioridad a los fines de
semana, para permitirme más tiempo para jugar y menos tiempo para quitar el polvo y limpiar los baños.
Si usted no está seguro de las actividades de diversión familiar en su comunidad disponibles durante este
verano, su coordinador de servicio de Early Steps o su especialista en Recursos para la Familia pueden
darle varias opciones. Si usted está interesado en lecturas de cuentos en la biblioteca pública, o en los
eventos en la piscina de la comunidad, o en volar cometas en un parque local, estoy seguro de que habrá
actividades que su familia le encantará.
Así que aquí está mi reto. La próxima vez que las tareas del hogar se están acumulando y lavandería se
encuentra en su agenda del día, considere posponer la limpieza al menos por un día. ¡Esos son los momen-

LA IMPORTANCIA DE ENSEÑARLES A LOS NIÑOS A “NADAR”
La “Cruz Roja Americana” le recuerda a los padres de niños pequeños acerca de la importancia de enseñarles a nadar:
- El Ahogamiento es la causa No. # 1 de muerte en los niños de 1 a 4 años en Florida.
- 75% de la víctimas tiene entre 12 a 25 meses de edad.
- 65% se ahogan en la piscina de la familia
- Por cada niño que se ahoga, 4 son hospitalizados por un nuevo ahogamiento.
- 33% de los ahogos sucede en la piscina del vecino o de un familiar
- 77% de los ahogados se perdieron de la vista de sus padres por menos de 5 minutos
En Florida los dueños de casa no están obligados a instalar una cerca para la piscina. De cualquier modo, la ley del
Estado requiere que cualquier puerta o ventana que abra hacia la piscina esté equipada con una alarma que advierta a los
residentes que la puerta se ha abierto. Todas las puertas que proveen acceso directo a la piscina deben estar equipadas
con un equipo de cerrado automático.
Las barreras removibles son una buena opción cuando hay niños pequeños en casa. Estas barreras se elaboran con una
altura de entre 48 a 60 inches y consisten en paneles conectados que se colocan a 20 inches de la piscina. La apertura
máxima entre la piscina y la barrera debe de ser de 1 inch. Para la instalación se requiere la perforación de huecos para
que los postes verticales de las barreras puedan ser insertados . Son removibles y pueden ser reemplazados luego.
