Madrid has recently become a top destination for the LGBT community from all
over the world, and the reasons are obvious. Not only is it a first-class tourist
and cultural destination, it is also a fun, friendly and tolerant city, renowned for
its diversity.
Madrid always welcomes visitors with open arms: making everyone feel right at
home. It is one of the most vibrant cities in Europe, a pioneer of the LGBT movement, and an example which many countries have chosen to follow. Wherever
you come from and whatever your sexual orientation, in Madrid you’re bound to
feel at ease.

resulta imparable.
EL BARRIO DE LA DIVERSIDAD
THE DISTRICT OF DIVERSITY
Hace algunas décadas comenzaron a

cocina internacional y animadas terrazas
inundan sus calles y también las zonas
aledañas, como Fuencarral –protagonista
indiscutible del shopping en Madrid-,
Malasaña y Triball –donde tienen su sitio
los creadores más emergentes- y Salesas,
con un espíritu entre chic y bohemio.
Its name alone evokes freedom, respect
and tolerance. In recent years, Chueca has
become more than just another district
in the city – it is now a benchmark for
the LGBT movement worldwide. And this
comes as no surprise, since it marks the
starting point of the LGBT community’s
fight for visibility, a movement that has
now become unstoppable.
A few decades ago, LGBT bars, restaurants
and other businesses, such as bookshops
and clothes shops, sprung up in the
district. Although these establishments
caused quite a stir among the more
conservative neighbours, over time the
locals have had the privilege of seeing their
neighbourhood transformed into the heart
of modernity. A place with a lifestyle free
from prejudices and exclusion.
Chueca is one of Madrid’s most cosmopolitan and colourful neighbourhoods.
Plaza de Chueca is the area’ s nerve centre,
around which all of its bustling life revolves, by day and by night. Avant-garde art
galleries, shops selling the latest fashion,
international restaurants and bustling
pavement cafés line the streets and also
the neighbouring areas, such as Fuencarral – a shopper’s paradise –, Malasaña and
Triball – a showcase for up-and-coming
designers –, and Salesas, which has a chic
and bohemian atmosphere.
These two adjacent districts are a melting
pot of cultures. Here, locals born and bred
share benches in the sun with new neighbours from South America, Africa and
Asia. Whilst still retaining their authentic,
traditional flavour, the rich ethnic diversity
of these streets is a wonderful example of
integration and coexistence.
Many new gay-friendly establishments
have opened in La Latina, especially ones
for women. Lavapiés also has interesting
and alternative gay and lesbian options,
adding to the wide range of tolerant spaces
in the city.
4. LAS FIESTAS
DEL ORGULLO
PRIDE FESTIVAL
Finales de junio-principios de julio
End of June-beginning of July
La Semana del Orgullo se ha convertido
en una de las citas imprescindibles de
Madrid.

Gay Pride Week has become one of the
events not to be missed in Madrid, a festival in which the whole city gets involved
and everyone takes to the streets to enjoy
a few days of fun. It is a way of welcoming
the summer, and all kinds of people take
part, regardless of their sexual orientation.
If there’s one thing that stands out in this
festival it’s diversity: people of all ages,
trends, cultures, nationalities and tastes
gather in the same place for a celebration
that marks the acceptance of the Gay/
LGBT community in Spain.

EL GRAN DESFILE
THE PARADE
5. Gay Pride is celebrated on 28 June all
around the world. That date marks the
anniversary of the riots that took place in
New York against the harassment suffered
by Stonewall, an LGBT bar. In Madrid, the
parade, which is a festival and a way of
demanding rights at the same time, takes
place on the first Saturday after 28 June.
Hundreds of thousands of people march
on foot or riding on dozens of floats. It
is very easy to join one of the floats and
watch the festival from a completely
different angle.
