Volatility of the financial markets keep calm and carry on the story of mike
1. Volatility of the Financial Markets: “Keep Calm and
Carry On”. The Story of Mike
Volatilidad de los Mercados Financieros: “Mantenga la
Clama y Siga Hacia Adelante”. La Historia de Mike
2. Should I Liquidate my Portfolio and Stay in Cash?
• Absolutely not ! • ¡De ninguna manera !
In the year 1939, the British Government create
the Ministry of Information, in charge of keeping
the population updated on the events of the 2nd
World War. The new Ministry would have the
responsibility of creating a publicity campaign to
boost the moral of the Subjects of then King
George VI. Two iconic posters appeared, the first
read “Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your
Resolution will Bring Us Victory” and the second
one, later very popular, “Keep Calm and Carry
On”.
Both messages apply very well during these
extreme volatility weeks observed in the
Financial Markets. This is not the first time nor
will it be the last that we see this type of swings.
Markets were due for some sort of a selloff after
7 years of high returns, therefore it is very
important that you stay calm and not deviate
from your investment objective.
Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution will Bring
and Carry on)”.

• In 1972 Mike invested $6,000 in the Stock
Market, he bought the S&P 500 Index
• Between 1973 and 1975, the Market fell by
50%, but Mike did not sell
• In 1987 Mike had saved $46,000 and again
used it all to buy the S&P 500 Index. The
market lost 30%, but Mike did not sell
• By end of 1999 Mike had saved $68,000 and
once more bought the S&P 500 Index. The
market fell 50% and Mike did not sell
• On October 2007 Mike had $64,000 in
savings and bought more of the S&P 500
Index. Another crash sent the Market down
by over 50%. Mike did not sell.
• By 2011 Mike’s Portfolio was
worth $1.1 million having
invested $184,000 and Staying
the Course
invertido $184,000 , siendo disciplinado y
Manteniendo su Rumbo
“It strikes me that if you did nothing else you never sell. That is, if you can grit your teeth through and just disregard short-term declines in the market or even
long-term declines in the market, you will come out well. I mean you just stick all your money in stocks and go home and don’t look at your portfolio you’ll do far
better than if you try to trade it.” – Alan Greenspan
cambiarlo” – Alan Greenspan
5. Main Reasons to “Stay the Course”
Razones Principales para “Mantener su Rumbo”
• After seven years of record highs, a
correction is normal
– On average a negative year for the S&P 500 implies a
loss of 13.44%. So far the Index has dropped 6.7%.
Not so bad
• Oil, one’s loss is the other’s gain
– A “zero sum” position. Transportation and energy
costs are down so airlines and trucking will benefit.
However it’s clear that oil producing sectors will be
negatively impacted
• China’s growth is still very good
– So far China’s economy has been doubling every 12
years, but has now slowed down, but still a +6%
growth is very good
• US Financial Sector is much better
capitalized than it was in 2008
– Banks are much more cautious now and less willing
to take crazy risks
• Unemployment is a record lows
– A 5.4% unemployment is not great but much better
that the 10% a few years ago
menos dispuestas a tomar riesgos innecesarios
6. What should you do?
¿Qué se debe hacer?
• Si tiene Dinero Efectivo para
invertir, ahora es un buen
momento para aprovechar las
bajas
• Elimine el factor “Emocional” de
sus inversiones. Recuerde
mantener su objetivo, “Mantenga
la Clama y Siga hacia Adelante”
• Cuídese de consejos de
amateurs, préstele atención a las
opiniones de los profesionales
• Recuerde la Fabula de la Liebre y
la Tortuga, la constancia siempre
triunfa
• If you have cash available
that you do not need, now is
a good time to invest taking
advantage of lower prices
• Remove emotions from your
investments. Remember to
stay your course, “Keep Calm
and Carry On”
• Beware of unsound advise,
listen to professionals, not
amateurs
• Remember the fable of the
Hair and the Tortoise,
consistency always wins.
