5. Every cell in the human body needs a continuous
supply of oxygen. The oxygen is used in a process that
captures the energy locked in the foods we eat. Carbon
dioxide is one of the waste products of this process, and the
body needs to get rid of carbon dioxide.
6. When we exercise, our cells are working harder, and they
need more oxygen. They also produce more carbon dioxide. That's why you
breathe faster when you exercise! You have probably noticed that when
you're exercising, your heart beats more quickly so that the blood can
transport oxygen to your cells faster. Your body needs the oxygen faster to
capture the energy locked in the food we eat! Your heart and lungs
work together to make sure every cell in your body receives enough oxygen.
7. What do you think happens to the speed of our breathing when
we're resting? When you rest, your cells aren't working very hard because
less energy is required to be locked out if the foods we eat, so your cells
need less oxygen. They also produce less carbon dioxide. This means that
you don't need to breathe as often as when you're moving around.
Remember that because the heart and lungs work as a team, when your
lungs are not functioning at a high speed, your heart is not functioning at a
high level either.
