Adverbs
Adverbs often tell when, where, why, or under what conditions something happens or happened.
Adverbs frequently end in –ly, however, many words and phrases, not ending in –ly serve an
adverbial function and a –ly is not a guarantee that a words is an adverb.
The words lovely, lonely, motherly, friendly and neighbourly are examples of adverbs.
Types of adverbs
1. Adverbs of manner:
Sebastian moves slowly and speaks quietly.
2. Adverbs of place:
Gary has lived on the island all of his life; he still lives there now.
3. Adverbs of frequency:
Francisca takes the boat to the mainland every day, so she often goes by herself.
4. Adverbs of time:
Chris should be back before dark, it’s starting to get dark now.
Jackie finished her tea first.
Bárbara left the party early.

5. Adverbs of degree:
Jimbo speaks really quickly.
Constantine is a very handsome man.
Prepositions
A preposition usually indicates the temporal, spatial or logical relationship of its object to the rest of
the sentence.
Examples:
1. I am good at English and maths.
2. I’m interested in music.
3. We have basketball training on Tuesdays and Fridays at 15:00 pm.
4. Tom gets up at 6:30 am.
5. Isabel Allende is famous for her writings.
6. What time is it? I have to be at School at 6:50 am.
7. The cat hid under the sofa.
8. Look! They are flying in a hot air balloon.
9. The bank is between the supermarket and the Mc Donald’s.
10.He gets excited about good films.
11.Are you keen on computer games?
12.Are all students in the classroom?

Solved exercises of adverbs and prepositions
A. Identify the adverbs in each sentence as well as the words they modify.
1. Marcela, deposit the money safely in the most powerful vault.
2. The recently found journal said Wallace was so lost that he just wandered aimlessly in circles
3. Running quickly for the end zone, the widely recruited fullback tripped.
4. Lynne pushed the most talented students, so they would finish the assignment quickly.
5. The author was quite annoyed when she determined that the publisher was very dishonest.
6. Wendy threw the garbage out, but the flies would not leave. (There are no adverbs)
7. After she looked carefully in both directions, Bárbara sprinted across.
8. Now that Roy has arrived safely, the group can settle down.
9. Their most talented competitor still will not defeat our top contender.
10.Always think positively when you’re presented an opportunity to succeed.
