Prólogo
Si realizar la Marcha Mundial por la Paz y la No-violencia fue un trabajo gigantes-
co, hacer un libro que dejara testimonio de lo ocurrido se convirtió en una tarea prác-
ticamente imposible, dada la impresionante cantidad de actividades que se desplega-
ron, tanto antes de que la Marcha comenzara como después, durante los 94 días del
recorrido desde el 2 de octubre en Wellington (Nueva Zelanda) hasta su conclusión
en el Parque Punta de Vacas (Argentina) el 2 de enero 2010.
La MM da para escribir varios libros. En este caso elegimos hacer una recopilación
donde principalmente se mostrara la Marcha de forma visual, con poco texto, el nece-
sario para contextualizar las imágenes, de manera que el lector pudiera captar con los
documentos gráficos el “más allá” de lo que se puede transmitir de forma escrita. Para
los interesados en los contenidos hemos incluido una sección de Documentos con los
textos que hemos estimado más significativos de la MM.
Esta elección supuso asumir varias limitaciones. La primera es que una gran cantidad
de actividades de la MM no fueron fotografiadas y por tanto no han podido ser refle-
jadas en la recopilación. Pedimos a Ud., lector, que tenga copresente que hubo nu-
merosas ciudades, barrios, pueblos y aldeas donde también estuvo la MM y no están
en este libro.
Una segunda limitación fue la del espacio. Resumir en dos o cuatro páginas todo lo
realizado en un país durante un año es una reducción importante. Haber dado la
extensión adecuada a lo hecho nos habría llevado a una obra de varios miles de pági-
nas, trabajo a todas luces inviable.
Podría seguir enumerando otras limitaciones, pero no lo voy a hacer por consider-
ación a su paciencia, pero sí quiero dejar constancia de una más que me parece nec-
esaria. Esta recopilación resulta ser una “mirada”, una forma de “ver” la Marcha Mun-
dial, y si otros fueran los recopiladores usted tendría entre sus manos un libro muy
distinto. De esta edición me hago responsable junto al gran equipo que he tenido el
privilegio de coordinar. A modo de ejemplo doy estos datos: el número de fotografías
que se incluyen en esta obra es de aproximadamente 2500. Pues bien, sólo en el
Equipo Base de la MM recopilamos un fondo de 97000 fotografías del recorrido. Es
decir, podríamos hacer casi 40 libros sin repetir ninguna fotografía. Este es uno de esos
40 posibles libros diferentes. Esta es una selección que, por fuerza, ha dejado fuera
muchas cosas importantes.
Por otro lado la obra tiene cierto toque formal, porque el ojo de la cámara en general
se va hacia lo más vistoso y lo más institucional, y porque la mayoría de los recopila-
dores de contenidos han elegido reconocer, como uno de sus contenidos relevantes,
la contribución de aquellos que los apoyaron.
Se pidió a los equipos organizadores nacionales que enviaran su resumen de lo ocur-
rido en sus países, convencidos de que darían una visión más global de su trabajo de
un año que la que el Equipo Base pudo apreciar en su paso de apenas uno o dos
días. Hemos tratado de respetar al máximo sus contenidos e incluso su redacción,
con la imprescindible revisión impuesta por el espacio con el que contamos y por la
mínima uniformidad del tono general del texto. Esta es la razón de la aparente dis-
paridad de criterios en el acento de los diferentes contenidos. Cuando no recibimos
información de un país rastreamos las webs y los emails que circularon en su día y,
recurriendo a la memoria de los miembros del equipo base que los visitaron, hemos
tratado de mostrar una semblanza lo más amplia posible de lo ocurrido. La web oficial
de la MM ha sido una la fuente importante de referencia documental.
Resumiendo, estamos ante una mirada subjetiva y particular sobre el fenómeno que
se desató con la MM que a todos nos sobrepasó ampliamente. Por otro lado, como el
trabajo de documentación era una tarea que nunca se cerraba, nos dimos varias fe-
chas para concluir esta obra que se fueron posponiendo hasta que finalmente decidi-
mos poner cierre a sabiendas y asumiendo que iba a resultar una muestra incompleta
de lo que sucedió. Fue la única manera en la que pudimos llegar a cerrar este trabajo.

donadas a la MM.
Seguro que a futuro sal-
drán otras producciones
que complementarán y
mejorarán este trabajo,
pero desde el equipo real-
izador de éste libro-docu-
mento creímos que era
necesario llevarlo adelante.
A medida que pasaba el
tiempo y llegaba más infor-
mación y más actividades
de nuevos países, si bien
el trabajo se hacía más
complejo, cobraba mucho
más sentido continuarlo,
pues esta recopilación
puede mostrar el resultado
de una suma de pequeños
y grandes esfuerzos que
podrían acabar perdidos en
el olvido.
Este libro es también para
las generaciones futuras.

Prologue
If the World March for Peace and Nonviolence was a gigantic undertaking, pro-
ducing a book as testament to what happened became almost impossible given the
tremendous amount of activities that unfolded both before the March began and
later during the 94 days of travel from the 2nd
of October, 2009 in Wellington, New
Zealand to its conclusion in Punta de Vacas Park of Study and Reflection, Ar-
gentina on the 2nd
of January, 2010.
It would be possible to write several books about the WM. In this case we have chosen
principally to show the March in a visual way, with little text, except where necessary
to give context to the images, so that the reader can glean “beyond” what can be
transmitted in words. For those interested in the words we have provided a section of
documents with the texts that we consider the most significant.
This decision imposed several limitations. The first is that a lot of activities of the WM
were not photographed and therefore could not be reflected in the collection. We ask
you, the reader, to keep in mind the numerous cities, neighbourhoods, towns and vil-
lages where there were also activities of the WM which are not included in this book.
A second limitation has been that of space. To summarise in two or four pages every-
thing done in a country over the course of one year is another significant restriction.
To have given the appropriate space to all that was done would have taken a work of
several thousand pages, something that was clearly not feasible.
It is possible to list the many limitations, but I will not do so for the sake of your pa-
tience, except to record one more that I think is very necessary.
This collection ends up being a “view”, a way of “seeing” the World March, and if
there were other compilers you would have in your hands a very different book. In this
edition I am responsible together with the large team that I have had the privilege to
coordinate. To illustrate the point: the total number of pictures included in this work is
approximately 2 500. And just as well, because within the Base Team alone we com-
piled a database of 97 000 photographs along the route. That is, enough to publish
approximately 40 books without repeating any photographs. This is one of the 40
possible different books. It is a selection that, by necessity, leaves out many important
things.
Furthermore the work has a certain formal touch, because the eye of the camera in
general goes towards the more colourful and more institutional and because most of
the content collectors have chosen to acknowledge the contributions of those who
supported them when deciding relevant content.
We asked the coordinators of the national organising committees to send a summary
of what happened in their countries, believing that they would give a broader picture
of their year’s work than that which the Base Team saw in its passage of just one or
two days. We have tried to respect most of the content and even its wording, within
the necessary revision enforced by the available space and the minimum requirement
of uniformity of style in the text. This is the reason for apparent differences of criteria
regarding the emphasis given to the different contents. When we didn’t receive infor-
mation from a country we scoured the websites and emails that circulated at the time
and, using the memory of team members who visited, we have tried to show as broad
a picture as possible of what happened. The official website of the WM has been an
important reference source.
In short, this is a subjective and particular view of the phenomena triggered by the
WM and which generally overwhelmed us all. Moreover, as the work of documenta-
tion was a never-ending task, there were several dates set for the completion of this
work which were postponed until finally we had to decide on a deadline knowing that
we would have an incomplete selection of what happened. But it was the only way in
which we were able to complete this work.

The book has been organised
into two large sections: the
Graphic section and the
Documentary section.
In the Graphic section there
are several sub-sections.
The opening, in which are
chronologically recounted the
steps of preparation, launch
and development of the Pre-
March.
Following this is the chrono-
logical-geographical develop-
ment of the World March
for Peace and Nonviolence
which breaks down the dif-
ferent routes of the different
Base Teams from the 2nd of
October, 2009 to January the
2nd, 2010: International, the
Middle East, the Balkans,
East and Southern Africa,
Galicia and Portugal, and
organising them into five ma-
jor continental zones Ocea-
nia-Asia, Europe, Africa,
North and Central America
and South America.
The Graphic section ends
with another large block,
covering various subjects: the
Base Teams, Institutional
recognition and receptions,
concerts, festivals and mu-
sic, materials and objects,
mass media-Pressenza,
documentary-videos,
newsletters, the environ-
ment, the Nuclear Abolition
Flame, the internet, web-
sites, blog’s and Facebook
and a final part where the
relationships with personali-
ties, institutions and organisa-
tions that supported the WM
are recorded.

to what the World March

the copyright to which have
been given to the WM.
Surely in the future other
productions will appear that
complement and enhance
this work, but this production
team thought it was neces-
sary to produce this book.
As time went by we received
more and more information
about activities from new
countries, and although the
work became more complex
the more it made sense to
include it as this collection
demonstrates the result of
the sum of small and large
efforts which would only end
up being forgotten.
This book is also for future
generations.

Ha resultado imposible rastrear la
totalidad de actividades dada la
cantidad enorme de eventos que
se realizaron en los distintos países
desde noviembre de 2007 hasta el
2 de octubre de 2009, fecha del co-
mienzo de la MM en Wellington.
Estas dificultades han sido de di-
verso tipo. La primera, conseguir la
información de la actividad, después,
contar con algún tipo de descripción
o relato de lo que ocurrió y, por
último, la dificultad, en muchos
casos imposible de salvar, de rescatar
algún documento grafico, fotografía,
vídeo de mínima calidad o bien una
reseña de prensa que diera constan-
cia de lo sucedido.
Por todo ello aquí hemos podido
reseñar algunos eventos que
quizás son los más relevantes
por su carácter de hitos sociales
o institucionales, pero que no
transmiten la realidad de lo su-
cedido. En los dos años previos
a la Marcha hubo una cantidad
enorme de manifestaciones en la
base, espontáneas, diversas, mul-
tiplicativas, que no contaron con
alguien que tomara la “foto” para
documentarlas. Cada vez más gru-
pos, asociaciones, personalidades
y entidades de todo tipo manifes-
taban su intención de participar en
el proyecto de la MM y trataban de
incluirse en una marea “in crescen-
do” que escapaba a todo control y
que, sin embargo, mantenía cierta
organizacion y coodinacion por la
fuerza del objetivo común.
Esta es, por tanto, una relación in-
completa de los eventos públicos
institucionales de la MM que, en
general, tienen cierto significado
que puede ayudar a entender
la génesis de este fenómeno
inédito.
Given the enormous number of
events that took place it has been
impossible to track all the activities
in the various countries since Nov-
ember 2007 until the 2nd
of October
2009, the date the March kicked off
in Wellington.
These difficulties have been of
various sorts. The first, to find out
about the activity, then to get some
kind of description or report about
what happened and finally the, in
many cases, impossible-to-resolve
difficulty of getting something gra-
phic, photos, video of even a mini-
mum quality or even a press article
to document what took place.
Nevertheless here we have been
able to review some events that
maybe have been the most rele-
vant because of their character as
a social or institutional milestone,
but that don’t transmit the reality
of what happened. In the two
years prior to the March there
was an enormous quantity of
spontaneous, diverse and mul-
tiplying events at the grassroots
that just lacked someone to
take the photo to document it.
Increasing numbers of groups,
associations, personalities and
bodies of all kinds expressed
their intention to participate in
the project and tried to organise
themselves to do so in a growing
tide that escaped all control and
that however, was achieved by
the sole strength of the common
objective.
This is, therefore, an incomplete
report of the institutional public
events of the WM that, generally
speaking, had a certain impor-
tance and can help to unders-
tand the genesis of this extraor-
dinary phenomenon.

de Educación y No-violencia en la
UNED y el Foro por el Desarme Nu-
clear Mundial realizado en la UNED
en Madrid, España organizado por
Mundo Sin Guerras, el Foro Huma-
nista de Educación y la UNED.
Entre otras conclusiones del Foro se
recogía esta: “Se ve la necesidad de
realizar acciones a nivel mundial.
Un equipo está trabajando en la
dirección de realizar una Marcha
Mundial por la Paz y la No-violen-
cia que recorra los 5 continentes”.

More than 70 creative
people from Europe,
America and Africa met
in Barcelona over the last
week of July 2008 to work
on designs for of the World
March campaign, through
the initiative of World with-
out Wars. The week ended
with a small scale test of the
WM through the streets of
Barcelona.
Graphic designers, musi-
cians, video experts, IT and
communication specialists,
translators and activists from
various points of Spain,
France, Belgium, Greece,
Italy, Morocco, Chile and
Hungary were together for
a whole week working on
the first materials, designs, TV
spots, music, maps and route
designs. In short, the first
productions that would start
to shape the World March.
To culminate this week of
work, a test march took
place on Sunday the 20th
of July through the streets
of Barcelona, turning it
into the first pioneer city to
support the passage of the
Great March that would
return once more to these
streets in November 2009.
The starting point was Co-
lumbus Square in front of
the monument to the explor-
er from where they headed
to the Liceo metro exit. The
next section was by Metro to
Catalonia Square where
taxis and motorbikes were
taken to the Arco de Triun-
fo. Next the March reached
Parque de la Ciudadela on
foot and by boat and in the
Estacion de Francia buses
were taken to Playa de la
Barceloneta where the
marchers went for a swim.
The whole journey was ac-
companied by humorous
and informative activities.
This March tried to be a min-
iature representation of what
would be, on a large scale,
the great World March for
Peace and Nonviolence.

Más de 70 creativos pro-
cedentes de Europa,
América y África se
dieron cita en Barcelona
durante la última sema-
na de julio de 2008 para
trabajar en el diseño de
la campaña de la Marcha
Mundial, por iniciativa de
Mundo sin Guerras. La
semana terminó con un
ensayo a pequeña escala
de la MM por las calles de
Barcelona.
Diseñadores gráficos, mú-
sicos, expertos en vídeo,
informática y comunicacio-
nes, traductores y activistas
procedentes de varios
puntos de España, Francia,
Bélgica, Grecia, Italia, Ma-
rruecos, Chile y Hungría,
estuvieron reunidos durante
toda la semana trabajando
en los primeros materiales,
diseños, spots, músicas,
mapas y diseños de rutas. En
síntesis los primeros produci-
dos que comenzaban a plas-
mar la Marcha Mundial.
Para culminar esta sema-
na de trabajo se realizó la
primera marcha conme-
morativa, el domingo 20
de julio, por las calles de
Barcelona, convirtiendo
así a esta ciudad en pio-
nera en el apoyo al paso
de la gran marcha, que
llegaría de nuevo a sus
calles en noviembre de
2009.
El punto de partida fue la
Plaza de Colón, frente
al monumento al descu-
bridor, desde donde se
caminó hasta la salida de
metro Liceo. El siguiente
tramo se hizo en Metro
hasta Plaza Catalunya,
donde se tomaron taxis y
motocicletas hasta Arco de
Triunfo. Después, la mar-
cha atravesó caminando
y en barca el Parque de
la Ciudadela y en la Esta-
ción de Francia se tomó el
autobús hasta la Playa de
La Barceloneta, donde los
caminantes se adentraron
en el mar. Todo el trayecto
estuvo acompañado de
actividades lúdicas y divul-
gativas.
Esta marcha trató de ser una
representación en miniatura
de lo que iba a ser a gran
escala la gran Marcha Mun-
dial por la Paz y la No-vio-
lencia.

At the end of the sympo-
sium “Ethics in Knowl-
edge” in the Park of Study
and Reflection, Punta
de Vacas and in the pres-
ence of almost one thou-
sand people, the World
March for Peace and
Nonviolence was officially
launched eleven months
before it set off.
On a magical evening,
in an impressive setting
where the valleys of the
three guardians of the
Andes converge: Tupun-
gato, Cordon de Plata,
and Aconcagua, at a time
when dusk was falling and
the air had an autumnal
feel, fireworks signalled
the start of the act. Those
present from different parts
of Argentina and Chile
alongside the international
delegations present at
the symposium were mill-
ing around in front of the
Hall of the Park where
a microphone had been
set up on a small wooden
platform. An atmosphere
of important history-mak-
ing events was in the air.
In front of an enthusiastic
and committed crowd,
Rafael de la Rubia
– whose brain child the
World March was – gave
a short address to present,
the motivations behind the
World March, the axes on
which this unusual action
- which had been worked
on for more than one year
- had been built and what
steps would have to be
taken to make it happen.
The proposal was that just
about one year later the
WM would arrive at that
same spot, having com-
pleted a world tour.
This public launch was the
point of no return. Until
this moment everything
had been a study and
investigation about the
viability of such an action.
From this moment on the
World March started to
be a reality in the hearts of
many people.
Among other things Rafael
said, “… From this highly
inspirational place, sur-
rounded by tall mountains,
from where the keys of ‘ac-
tive nonviolence’ and ‘uni-
versalist humanism’ were
given, we are launching the
World March for Peace
and Nonviolence.
… Times of renewal are
coming, in which human be-
ings will once more circle the
planet Earth. Not in order
to satisfy their hunger, or to
enslave or steal from others,
but rather to extend a hand
in recognition of their broth-
ers and sisters, to reconcile,
to collaborate, to build the
foundations of a new cul-
ture, a new civilisation as
has never before existed on
Earth. To decisively build a
Universal Human Nation...”

En el Parque de Estudio
y Reflexión de Punta de
Vacas, ante un millar de
asistentes, clausurado el sim-
posio sobre “La Ética en el
Conocimiento”, se realizo
el lanzamiento oficial de la
Marcha Mundial por la Paz
y la No-violencia once me-
ses antes de su comienzo.
En una tarde mágica, en el es-
cenario impresionante donde
convergen los valles de los
tres guardianes de los Andes,
el Tupungato, el Cordón
de Plata y el Aconcagua,
en el momento donde cae
la tarde y la luz iba tomando
consistencia otoñal, unos
fuegos artificiales dieron la
señal del comienzo del acto.
Los asistentes llegados de
distintos lugares de Argen-
tina y Chile, además de las
delegaciones internacionales
presentes en el Simposio, se
fueron arremolinando frente
a la Sala del Parque donde
se había instalado un pie de
micrófono sobre una peque-
ña plataforma de madera. En
el aire se respiraba la atmós-
fera de los eventos importan-
tes, esos que hacen historia.
Ante un auditorio entusiasta
y entregado, el impulsor de la
MM, Rafael de la Rubia ex-
puso en una breve alocución
cuáles eran las motivaciones
y los ejes sobre los que se
proyectaba esa acción inédi-
ta de una Marcha Mundial
en la que se venía trabajando
desde hacía más de un año,
y qué pasos habría que llevar
adelante para poder reali-
zarla. La propuesta era que
prácticamente un año des-
pués, habiendo completado
la vuelta al mundo, la MM
llegara a ese mismo lugar.
Este lanzamiento público
significó el punto de no
retorno. Hasta ese momen-
to todo había sido estudio
e investigación sobre la
viabilidad de tal acción. A
partir de ese momento
la MM comenzó a ser una
realidad en el corazón de
mucha gente.
Entre otras cosas Rafael dijo
“… Desde este lugar de alta
inspiración, rodeados de
grandes montañas, desde
donde se dieron las claves
de la “no-violencia activa” y
del “humanismo universalis-
ta”, estamos haciendo este
lanzamiento de la Marcha
Mundial por la Paz y la
No-violencia.
… hoy llegan tiempos de
renovación, en los que
el ser humano vuelva a
recorrer el planeta tierra.
No para saciar su hambre,
ni para esclavizar o robar
al otro. Sino para tender
la mano reconociendo al
hermano, para reconciliar-
se, para colaborar, para
construir las bases de una
nueva cultura, de una nue-
va civilización como jamás
antes hubo en la tierra. Para
decididamente construir la
nación humana universal...”
