En Costa Rica, contamos con la única planta de manufactura
metalmecánica de luminarias fluorescentes y tecnología LED, la
cual se encuentra certificada UL y bajo el sistema de calidad
ISO 9001:2008.
Nuestro personal altamente calificado cuenta con más de 50 años de
experiencia en el negocio, por lo que cabe destacar el gran compromiso
en cuanto a la calidad de nuestros productos, así como el servicio al

In Costa Rica, we have the only metalworking manufacturing plant of
fluorescent fixtures and LED technology, which is certified under the UL
and ISO 9001:2008 quality system. Our highly qualified staff has over 50
years experience in the business, so it stands out the great commitment

Our commitment to quality is born from the relationship with our raw
material suppliers, with whom we maintain constant communication to

A partir de agosto de 2012, en Costa Rica se oficializó como
“Código Eléctrico de Costa Rica para la Seguridad de la Vida y de
la Propiedad”, la norma NFPA-70 en su última versión en español
denominada NEC 2008.
El propósito de este Código es la salvaguardia de las personas y de los
bienes, de los riesgos que se derivan de una inadecuada instalación
eléctrica o del uso de materiales y equipos para el uso de electricidad.
De manera básica, UL es un sello de seguridad que le garantiza
tranquilidad, protección y confianza a la hora de utilizar nuestros
productos. UL se refiere a Underwriters Laboratories Inc., como una
entidad global independiente, que se encarga de regular y educar al
mercado, cuyo propósito es concientizar a la población para que utilice
productos seguros. Como institución, UL da seguimiento y controla a la
empresa que fabrica, en este caso a Sylvania, para asegurar la calidad y
buen desempeño del producto.
Cuando se habla de seguridad, se refiere a evitar fallas por un manejo
inadecuado del producto; por ejemplo, en el caso de las luminarias, evitar
incendios a causa de algún desajuste eléctrico, o que un
instalador o usuario se vean en peligro por no tener protección a posibles
cortos circuitos.
Las especificaciones de la norma UL controlan la manufactura de los
diversos productos, dependiendo de la categoría a la que pertenezca
cada uno de ellos, ya sea este eléctrico o no.
UL le da a Sylvania la garantía y el respaldo que el mercado requiere y que
usted, como cliente, espera y exige. Iniciamos por la fabricación del
producto, asegurándonos que los materiales que utilizamos, así como la
forma de hacerlo, vayan acorde con las normas eléctricas establecidas y
también que la producción esté alineada a los estándares de la norma.
La “Norma 1598 Luminarias” es la que corresponde al producto que en
Havells Sylvania Costa Rica diseñamos, fabricamos y distribuimos en la
región. Esta norma es una guía que involucra cuáles son los materiales que
se pueden utilizar, los espesores del material de diferentes piezas, la
configuración del troquelado, la distribución de los componentes, ubicación
de balastros, la continuidad, aterrizaje y otros factores sobre la
construcción mecánica y eléctrica. También regula las condiciones del
ensamble del producto, las instrucciones que debe llevar y las limitaciones
de ubicación, voltaje, tipo de lámpara, etc.
“UL Listed” es la marca específica que utilizamos en Sylvania. Esto implica
que se realiza el envío de una luminaria modelo a los laboratorios UL en
Estados Unidos, y que después de obtener su aprobación, se pueden
diseñar otras luminarias bajo la marca -en tanto se mantengan dentro de
esta categoría-. Un inspector en sitio verifica que el diseño y producción
vaya conforme a la norma, para poder ofrecerle al cliente un producto
seguro con los más altos estándares de calidad ya comprobados.
El uso de UL actualmente no es obligatorio en muchos países, sin embargo
hay una tendencia en el incremento de su implementación, liderada por
ingenieros eléctricos, arquitectos, constructoras y asociaciones de
profesionales como el Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y Arquitectos de

Costa Rica; Código que le da sin duda alguna un valor agregado al
producto por asegurar las bajas probabilidades de fallar, y si falla, será de
manera controlada.
Para validar que el producto realmente sea UL, las luminarias tienen una
etiqueta holográfica donde se identifica la marca del ente que certifica y la
información del producto. Para asegurarse aún más, puede verificar en la
página oficial www.ul.com, donde se encuentra el directorio de
certificaciones por país, para comprobar que la empresa fabricante está
registrada.
La instalación y el mantenimiento son dos prácticas que también son de
gran responsabilidad. Es importante leer las instrucciones detenidamente y
seguir cada uno de los pasos que se encuentran en el instructivo de
montaje y etiquetas, además de no asumir ningún detalle ya que el sentido
común no es universal.
En Havells-Sylvania Costa Rica hemos implementado en nuestros
procesos empresariales la normativa ISO 9001:2008, teniendo como
alcance la “Producción y comercialización de luminarias y afines”. Lo
anterior abarca los sistemas de iluminación HID, incandescentes,
fluorescentes, LED y demás productos que en la empresa fabriquemos y/o
comercialicemos para suplir las necesidades de nuestros clientes en
cuanto a iluminación se refiera.
La certificación del sistema de gestión de la calidad de Sylvania fue
obtenida en el año 2013 a través del cumplimiento de los requisitos
exigidos y su debida comprobación del mismo por parte de un ente
certificador acreditado.
Nuestro sistema de calidad ISO 9001:2008 se centra en todos los
elementos de administración de calidad con los que se debe contar para
tener un sistema efectivo que permita administrar y mejorar la calidad de
nuestros productos, además de satisfacer las necesidades de nuestros

Since August 2012, in Costa Rica was formalized as "Electrical Code of
Costa Rica for the Safety of Life and Property", the NFPA-70 standard in
its latest Spanish version called NEC 2008.
The purpose of this Code is to safeguard people and property from risks
arising from inadequate wiring or from the use of materials and
equipment for electricity usage.
Basic way, UL is a security seal that guarantees tranquility, security and
confidence when using our products. It refers to UL Underwriters
Laboratories Inc., as an independent global entity that is responsible for
regulating and educating the market, whose purpose is to raise public
awareness to use safe products. As an institution, UL monitors and
controls the manufacturing company, in this case Sylvania, to ensure the
quality and good performance of the product.
When discussing security, it concerns to prevent failure due to improper
handling of the product; for example, in matters of lighting, avoid fire due
to an electrical mismatch, or prevent that an installer or user could be
compromised by not having protection for possible short circuits.
UL specifications control the manufacture of different products, depen-
ding on the category to which each belongs, whether it is electric or not.
This standard gives Sylvania the warranty and support required by the
market; the same that you as a customer, expect and demand. We begin
with the product manufacture, ensuring that the materials we use in
addition to the way we do it, go according to the electrical standards, but
also, that the production gets aligned to the standards of the norm.
The "1598 Fixtures Standard" is the one that corresponds to the design,
manufacture and distribution of our product in Havells Sylvania Costa
Rica, for the region. This standard is a guide that involves which materials
can be used, the thickness of the material of different pieces, die-cut
configuration, distribution of components, ballast location, continuity,
landing and other factors on the mechanical and electrical construction. It
also regulates the conditions of the product assembly, instructions that
should be lead, location constraints, voltage, lamp type, etc.
"UL Listed" is the specific brand we use at Sylvania. This implies that
sending a fixture model to UL labs in the U.S. is performed, and after
obtaining approval, other fixtures can be designed under the brand (as
remain within this category). An on-site inspector verifies that the design
and production go according to the standard, to offer customers a safe
product with the highest standards of quality already proven.
Using UL is currently not mandatory in many countries, however there is a
trend in the increase of its implementation, led by electrical engineers,
architects, construction companies and professional associations such as
the Association of Engineers and Architects of Costa Rica; Standard that
certainly gives added value to the product, in order to ensure low
probability of failure, and if it fails, it will be in a controlled way.
In order to validate that the product is UL certified, fixtures have a
holographic label where the certifying brand entity and the product
information are identified. To ensure that even more, you can check on
the official website www.ul.com, where you will find the certifications
directory by country, to verify that the manufacturer is registered.
Installation and maintenance are two practices that are also of great
responsibility. It is important to read the instructions carefully and follow
each of the steps that are in the assembly instructions and labels, in
addition to not assume any details, as common sense is not universal.

At Havells-Sylvania Costa Rica, we have implemented in our business
processes the ISO 9001:2008 standard, with the scope of "Production
& Marketing of Lighting Fixtures and related". This includes HID lighting
systems, incandescent, fluorescent, LED and other products that are
manufactured and distributed in our company, in order to meet the
needs of our customers in terms of lighting concerns.
The system certification of quality management of Sylvania was acquired
in 2013 through the implementation of the requirements duly proven by
an accredited certification body.

management that must exist, to achieve an effective system that can

El departamento de Investigación y Desarrollo de
Luminarias (R&D) de Havells Sylvania Costa Rica, cuenta con
un equipo de ingenieros en Diseño Industrial, quienes al vincular
los conocimientos óptimos con herramientas de software de

Sus instalaciones al lado de la planta de manufactura de
luminarias permite el contacto directo con la fabricación del
producto, lo que agiliza consecuentemente los tiempos de
producción, llevando ideas a conceptos, pasando por
modelados y simulaciones tridimensionales hasta el
prototipado, seguido de pruebas físicas de desempeño que
aseguran la confiabilidad de los nuevos modelos.
Cada nuevo planteamiento surge de la necesidad de nuevos
diseños o rediseños de luminarias que deban alcanzar una
máxima optimización y constante mejora de los modelos de
catálogos. La finalidad es contar siempre con productos de la
completa satisfacción para nuestros clientes, que cumplan con
todos los requerimientos solicitados.
El departamento pone a disposición diferentes áreas o
aspectos en los que se especializa. La investigación es uno de
ellos, en donde se analizan los intereses de nuestros clientes
para alinearnos a las necesidades de iluminación de sus
proyectos. Asimismo, se estudia para estar al tanto de las
nuevas tendencias en materia de construcción y tecnologías
vanguardistas.
Otro factor importante es la capacidad de realizar evaluaciones
estimadas de las eficiencias de cada uno de los modelos de
luminarias, gracias a un software especializado que permite
realizar un estudio probabilístico, a través del cuál se obtiene
una simulación del comportamiento de la luminaria en la
realidad. Dicho estudio da soporte al departamento de
ingeniería de proyectos para ofrecer el servicio a los clientes
que requieran una simulación de la aplicación del producto en la
realidad.
Investigación & Desarrollo
Aunado a esto, existe otro tipo de pruebas, como las de temperatura,
simulación de lluvia y planos de conexiones eléctricas, las cuales represen-
tan otro tipo de soporte técnico que el departamento brinda a nuestros
clientes para que puedan estar plenamente seguros de la calidad de los
productos desarrollados.
Toda información de material técnico como planos de conexiones
eléctricas, material informativo, instructivos de ensamble y montaje, fichas
técnicas, empaques y demás, es recopilada en el departamento, con el fin
de que el cliente tenga una perspectiva más clara respecto al producto
que está adquiriendo.
Finalmente, la experiencia y conocimientos acumulados en el departamen-
to de R&D se convierten en una fuente de soporte técnico y entrenamien-
to, donde nuestro personal capacitado puede dar respuesta a inquietudes
técnicas de iluminación, balastros y componentes, además de cualquier
necesidad de iluminación.

The department of fixtures Research and Development (R&D)
of Havells Sylvania Costa Rica, has a team of engineers in Industrial
Design; people who combine their knowledge with the last generation
software tools, achieving an ideal execution of modern designs.
Subsequently, the fixtures are flawlessly produced, thanks to the
collaboration of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and specialists
within the manufacturing plant.
Its installations next to the fixtures manufacturing plant, allow direct
contact with the product manufacture, which consequently speeds up
production times, bringing ideas into concepts, passing through
modeling and three-dimensional simulation to prototyping, followed by
performance physical tests to ensure the reliability of new models.
Each new approach arises from the need of new fixtures designs or
redesigns that must attain maximum optimization and continuous
improvement from the catalogs models. The aim is always to have
products of complete satisfaction for our customers, who meet all the
requirements requested.
The department offers different aspects in which it specializes.
Research is one of them, where the interests of our customers are
analyzed in order to get aligned to the project’s lighting needs. It is
also studied to be aware of new trends in construction matters and
cutting-edge technologies.
Another important factor is the ability to develop estimated evaluations
of the efficiencies of each fixture model, thanks to a specialized
software that allows a probabilistic study, through which a simulation
of the behavior of the light is obtained in real evaluations. This study
supports the project engineering department to provide service to
customers who require a simulation of the product application in
reality.
Added to this, there are other tests, such as temperature, rainfall
simulation and circuit diagrams, which represent another type of
support that the department provides to our customers, so they can
be fully confident about the quality of the developed products.
All the information of technical equipment such as circuit diagrams,
instructions for assembly and installation, technical specifications,
packaging and so on, is collected in the department, so that the client
has a clearer perspective on the product that is acquiring.
Finally, the experience and knowledge accumulated in the R&D
department become a source of technical support and training, where
our knowledgeable staff can answer technical concerns of lighting,
ballasts and components, in addition to any lighting need.

Ingeniería de Valores
En Sylvania entendemos que Ingeniería de Valores no implica reducir los
precios de los equipos a costa de la calidad, sino, analizar los
requerimientos luminotécnicos de los proyectos buscando no exceder la
normativa y reduciendo el consumo.
Esto se logra utilizando luminarias con ópticas más eficientes que las
planteadas en el diseño, reduciendo así el total de unidades y la densidad
de carga, generando para el cliente un menor consumo de materiales de
iluminación y eléctricos, sin sacrificar la calidad de los espacios de trabajo.
Asesorías Técnicas
Sylvania ofrece a través del departamento de Proyectos, una evaluación de
las situaciones de trabajo en términos de iluminación existente versus la
normativa (salud ocupacional).
A partir de los resultados de esta evaluación, se presentan propuestas de
luminotecnia y económicas tendentes al ahorro eléctrico, que colaboren
con el incremento de la producción de los colaboradores y la maximización
de la calidad de luz en los espacios de trabajo.
Reconversiones
El trabajo que realizamos en Sylvania respecto a las reconversiones, se
define como el proceso mediante el cual se optimiza una situación de
iluminación, cambiando la tecnología de la fuente y reduciendo por ende el
consumo eléctrico.
Los entregables los detallamos a continuación:

• Propuesta luminotécnica de mejora o mantenimiento
• Propuesta económica del retorno sobre inversión (ROI / Return Over

Value Engineering
At Sylvania, we understand that Value Engineering does not imply to
reduce equipment prices at expense of quality, but, analyzing the lighting
requirements of projects, looking not to exceed the regulations and
reducing consumption.
This is accomplished using fixtures with more efficient optics than those
raised in the original design, thus reducing the total number of units and the
charge density, generating for the customer a lower consumption of
materials and electrical lighting, without sacrificing the quality of the
working spaces.
Technical Consultancy
Sylvania offers through the Projects Department, an assessment of the
work situations in terms of existing lighting versus the regulations
(occupational health).
From the results of this evaluation, lighting studies and economic
proposals aimed to electrical savings are submitted, in order to collaborate
with the increased production of the employees and the maximized quality
of light of the workspaces.
Reconversions
The work we do at Sylvania regarding conversions, is defined as the
process by which a lighting situation is optimized by changing the source
technology and thereby reducing power consumption.
The deliverables are detailed below:

Cuerpo de la Luminaria
Todas nuestras luminarias fluorescentes cuentan con los mejores
componentes que garantizan que su funcionamiento sea el más óptimo,
eficiente y seguro, con el fin de que la experiencia del usuario con nuestros
productos sea excepcional.
Los cuerpos de las luminarias Sylvania son fabricados en hierro negro
según la norma JIS G3141 SPCC-SD. Son tratados químicamente contra la
oxidación, soldados por punto eléctrico de alto voltaje, y además cuentan
con protección térmica y contra transientes de voltaje.
Pintura de Alta Reflectividad
Nuestras luminarias están recubiertas con pintura poliéster en polvo de alta
reflectividad (93%), larga durabilidad y cero decoloración, bajo un proceso
de post-pintado. Gracias a las características de esta pintura, se garantiza
un acabado homogéneo y altamente estético. Además, cuenta con
propiedades mecánicas y químicas muy superiores a la pintura líquida
convencional, lo que asegura un alto desempeño y le brinda al producto
final una alta protección. La pintura no contiene solventes, por lo que da
como resultado una luminaria amigable con el ambiente que no produce
contaminantes.

Fixture body
All our fluorescent fixtures have the best components to ensure that its
operation will be the most optimal, efficient and safe; guaranteeing to our
customers an outstanding experience.
The bodies of Sylvania’s fixtures are manufactured in black iron according
to JIS G3141 SPCC-SD standard. They are chemically treated against
oxidation and welded by high voltage electric point. In addition to that, they
have thermal protection against voltage transients.
High Reflectivity Paint
Our fixtures are coated with polyester powder paint of high reflectivity (93%),
durability and non-discoloration under a post-painted process. Thanks to
the paint features, a uniform and highly aesthetic finish is ensured. It also
has mechanical and chemical properties far superior to conventional liquid
paint, which ensures high performance and protection to the final product.
The paint contains no solvents, resulting in an environmentally friendly fixture
that produces no pollutants.
