The Heart of the Data Mesh Beats in Real-Time with Apache KafkaKai Wähner
If there were a buzzword of the hour, it would certainly be "data mesh"! This new architectural paradigm unlocks analytic data at scale and enables rapid access to an ever-growing number of distributed domain datasets for various usage scenarios.
As such, the data mesh addresses the most common weaknesses of the traditional centralized data lake or data platform architecture. And the heart of a data mesh infrastructure must be real-time, decoupled, reliable, and scalable.
This presentation explores how Apache Kafka, as an open and scalable decentralized real-time platform, can be the basis of a data mesh infrastructure and - complemented by many other data platforms like a data warehouse, data lake, and lakehouse - solve real business problems.
There is no silver bullet or single technology/product/cloud service for implementing a data mesh. The key outcome of a data mesh architecture is the ability to build data products; with the right tool for the job.
A good data mesh combines data streaming technology like Apache Kafka or Confluent Cloud with cloud-native data warehouse and data lake architectures from Snowflake, Databricks, Google BigQuery, et al.

A Look at How Riot Games Implemented Non-Invasive Data Governance
Riot Games created and runs “League of Legends,” the world’s most-played PC game and most viewed eSport — and is now transforming to become a multi-title publisher. To keep pace with this transformation and support a growing player base of millions, Riot Games is taking a page from Bob Seiner’s book, “Non-Invasive Data Governance: The Path of Least Resistance and Greatest Success” and leveraging the Alation Data Catalog to help guide accurate, well-governed analysis.
Bob Seiner will join Riot Games’ Chris Kudelka, Technical Product Manager, and Michael Leslie, Senior Data Governance Architect, and Alation’s John Wills, VP of Professional Service, for an inside look at Data Governance at one of the world’s leading gaming companies.
Join this webinar to learn:
• How Riot Games is implementing Non-Invasive Data Governance
• How this new approach to Data Governance helps to drive the business
• How the Alation Data Catalog helps Riot Games create the foundation for guiding accurate, well-governed data use
How Graph Algorithms Answer your Business Questions in Banking and BeyondNeo4j
Graph algorithms are powerful tools, and there’s a lot of excitement about their applications for data science. It can sometimes be difficult, however - especially for those of us who aren’t data scientists - to know how they might be applied to a particular data set or a specific business problem. There are graph algorithms for centrality and importance measurement, community detection, similarity comparison, pathfinding, and link prediction. Which ones should you use on your data, and which ones might be most useful in answering your business questions?
In this presentation, we’ll look at a few examples of Neo4j graph algorithms, and see how they can be applied to data and business problems from the banking industry. We’ll discuss what kinds of data are appropriate for different types of algorithms, show how to model and structure data to work with graph algorithms, and run through some real-world scenarios demonstrating the use of graph algorithms on a sample banking data set.

Metadata is hotter than ever, according to a number of recent DATAVERSITY surveys. More and more organizations are realizing that in order to drive business value from data, robust metadata is needed to gain the necessary context and lineage around key data assets. At the same time, industry regulations are driving the need for better transparency and understanding of information.
While metadata has been managed for decades, new strategies & approaches have been developed to support the ever-evolving data landscape, and provide more innovative ways to drive business value from metadata. This webinar will provide an overview of metadata strategies & technologies available to today’s organization, and provide insights into building successful business strategies for metadata adoption & use.

Outrageous ideas for Graph Databases
Almost every graph database vendor raised money in 2021. I am glad they did, because they are going to need the money. Our current Graph Databases are terrible and need a lot of work. There I said it. It's the ugly truth in our little niche industry. That's why despite waiting for over a decade for the "Year of the Graph" to come we still haven't set the world on fire. Graph databases can be painfully slow, they can't handle non-graph workloads, their APIs are clunky, their query languages are either hard to learn or hard to scale. Most graph projects require expert shepherding to succeed. 80% of the work takes 20% of the time, but that last 20% takes forever. The graph database vendors optimize for new users, not grizzly veterans. They optimize for sales not solutions. Come listen to a Rant by an industry OG on where we could go from here if we took the time to listen to the users that haven't given up on us yet.

What Finance can learn from Dating SitesMax De Marzi
Dating, as is often said, is a numbers game. And organizations such as Match.com, and Zoosk rely on very sophisticated technology as they sift through vast customer bases to create the most compatible couples. Specially, they rely on data to build the most nuanced portraits of their members that they can, so they can find the best matches. This is a business-critical activity for dating sites — the more successful the matching, the better revenues will be. One of the ways they do this is through graph databases. These differ from relational databases as they specialize in identifying the relationships between multiple data points. This means they can query and display connections between people, preferences and interests very quickly.
In this session you will see how in many ways dating sites are getting better performance and more value out of their data than financial institutions by using Neo4j.
