MAIN USES
1. We use the passive voice when we do not know who has realized the action. Example: A man has been killed.
(Usamos la voz pasiva cuando no sabemos quien ha realizado la acción). Ejemplo: Un hombre ha sido asesinado.
2. We use the passive voice when we want to give more importance to what it went on, that to the one who realized the action or
when we do not want to say who realized it. Example: The letter was delivered yesterday.
(Usamos la voz pasiva cuando queremos dar más importancia a lo que pasó, que a quién realizó la acción o cuando no queremos decir quien la realizó).
Ejemplo: La carta fue entregada ayer.

3. THE PASSIVE VOICE: TRANSFORMATION OF A ACTIVE SENTENCE TO PASSIVE SENTENCE
1. The object of the active prayer happens to be the subject of the passive one.
(El objeto de la oración activa pasa a ser el sujeto de la pasiva).
2. The principal verb is replaced by the auxiliary one ' to be ', in the same time, along with the principal verb in participle.
(El verbo principal se sustituye por el auxiliar "to be", en su mismo tiempo, junto al verbo principal en participio).
3. The subject of the principal prayer happens to be a complement agent of the passive one.
(El sujeto de la oración principal pasa a ser complemento agente de la pasiva).
4. If we mention in the prayer of the subject that realizes the action (fastened agent), this one will be normally preceded by the preposition 'by'.
(Si hacemos mención en la oración del sujeto que realiza la acción (sujeto agente), este irá normalmente precedido por la preposición "by“).
Examples:
Marcel Twain wrote the book.
The book was written by Marcel Twain. (Marcel Twain escribió el libro.
El libro fue escrito por Marcel Twain.)
The housekeeper will clean the room.
The room will be cleaned by the housekeeper. (La ama de casa limpiará la habitación.
La habitación será limpiada por la ama de casa.)
THE PASSIVE VOICE: STRUCTURE IN DIFFERENTS TENSES
- Present Simple: Subject + AM / IS / ARE + Past Participle + Complements.
Animals are sold in this shop. (Se venden animales en esta tienda).
- Past Simple: Suject + WAS / WERE + Past Participle + Complements.
My car was stolen last night. (Mi coche fue robado anoche).
- Present Perfect: Subject + HAVE / HAS + BEEN + Past Participle + Complements.
A mistake has been made by Tom. (Un error ha sido cometido por Tomás).
- Past Perfect Simple: Subject + HAD + BEEN + Past Participle + Complements.
The man had been injured (by someone). (El hombre había sido herido (por alguien)).
- Past Perfect Continuous: Subject + WAS / WERE + BEING + Past Participle + Complements.
I felt I was being watched. (Sentí que yo estaba siendo mirado).
- Future with “will”: Subject + WILL + BE + Past Participle + Complements.
You will be told soon. (Le diran pronto).
- Future with “going to”: Subjet + AM / IS / ARE + GOING TO + BEEN + Past Participle + Complements.
The car is going to have been washed. (El coche va a tener que estar lavado).
- Modal verb (must, can, should): Subject + MUST / CAN / SHOULD + BE + Past Participle.
Nothing can be done to solve this mystery. (Nada puede ser hecho para solucionar este misterio).
Questions can be asked during the conference. (Pueden hacerse preguntas durante la conferencia).
The carpenter should be asked to repair the fence. (Al carpintero deberían pedirle que repare la cerca).

Active: I wrote a letter last night.

Passive: The letter was written by me.
(La carta fue escrita por mí).
Active: Your words that you said were like honey to my mind.
(Las palabras que usted dijo parecieron miel a mi parecer).
Passive: The words that was told by you were like honey to my mind.
(Las palabras que fueron dichas por usted parecieron miel a mi parecer).
Active: The gifts you offered for Christmas were my favorites.
(Los regalos que usted ofreció durante la Navidad eran mis favoritos).
Passive: The gifts that was offered by you for Christmas were my favorites.
(Los regalos que fueron ofrecidos por usted durante la Navidad eran mis favoritos).
Active: He's cooking the chicken in the oven.
(Él cocina al pollo en el horno).
Passive: The chicken is being cooked in the oven.
(El pollo está siendo cocinado en el horno).
Active: I painted the walls in my house.
(Pinté las paredes en mi casa).
Passive: The walls in my house were painted by me.
