3. Iniciativas integradas y mercadeo social para
construir comunidad y apoyo social

Choices. FNS/USDA, 2010.
14. E. Conclusiones

Today I want to bring up a topic that I hope it is not new for you…
The outline of the presentation is:
What’s tha nature of the problem?
What are the causes?
Are people aware?
What can nutrition education do?
Conclusions
So, let’s begin…
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Overweight and obesity is the fifth worldwide mortality risk factor and was causing more thousands of deaths in middle income countries in 2004. In the graph you can also observe that overweight and obesity is related to the first three mortality risk factors.
And this is because the increase in body weight, specifically the accumulation of body fat, is categorize as an intermediate factor of Non Communicable Diseases (NCD’s), as myocardial and cerebral strokes, diabetes, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, and others. These type of diseases are causing approximately 38 millions of death worldwide and disability in millions of people.
And let’s take a look of the prevalence of overweight and obesity in women of reproductive age in Central America and Dominican Republic from 1988 through 2011. We can observe that obesity has increased in the low, middle and upper socioeconomic level.
And it is not just a condition seen in high income level countries, as once thought… Evidence has demonstrated that poverty is interconnected with NCD’s in a vicious cycle. In the red boxes you can observe the causes and consequences of poverty and NCD’s and how they interrelate.
And a good example is the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Guatemala by ethnic group as shown in this figure.
So you may we wandering… What are the causes?
Please take a look to this figure simplifying the main and direct causes of overweight and obesity.
In this diagram you can find another explanation on how poverty can cause both undernutrition, and overnutrition leading to obesity, all of them in the context of the demographic, nutritional and epidemiological transition that all countries are going through, each one in a different phase of the transition.
The WHO has created and promoted global voluntary targets to be attained by 2025, in which halting obesity appears as one of the targets proposed. It has also been approved the “Action plan for the prevention of childhood and adolescence obesity” by the majority of the State Members.
Is people aware of the problem in Guatemala?
The Zero Hunger Pact proposed by the former government included only the reduction of poverty and undernutrition as its main goal. This Pact included Food and Nutrition Education as one of its seven strategies.
Also as part of the responses given to the “Nutrition awareness questionnaire” by to Guatemalan men, we found that one out of two knew that modifying diet could prevent NCD’s, which was not the case for the other interviewee who thought that NCD’s were present only in people who inherit them.
In the report of the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity these options were proposed, in which Nutrition Education has a determinant role in each one of them.
So what components must nutrition education include to become effective in reducing overweight and obesity?
As a wrap-up I want to share these four main conclusions:
And I want to end with a question, which I hope it will promote action.
Thank you for your attention!
