2. The hare and the turtle
In the world of the animals, there was a very arrogant hare because she said to everyone she was the fastest.
That’s why she was always laughing at the slow turtle.
-Look at the turtle! Hey turtle, don’t run so much that you’re going to get tired of going so fast!- The hare used to
say laughing at the turtle.
One day, they were talking and it occurred to the turtle to make a strange bet with the hare.
-I’m sure I can win you a race- she said.
- To me?- asked the hare astonished.
-Yes, to you. Let’s put our bet on that stone and let’s see who wins the race.
The hare, very amused, accepted. All the animals met to watch the race. The road and the finishing line were
marked. Once it was ready, the race started among big applauses.
Relying on her speed, the hare left the turtle go and she remained lazing about. She had time enough to win such
a slow creature!
Then she start running, she run fast as the wind while the turtle went slow but without stopping. At once she went
ahead. She stopped next to the road and she sat to rest.
When the turtle passed by her side, the hare made fun of her once more. She left her advantage and set out her
quick walk. She did the same several times but, in spite of her mocks, the turtle kept her way until she arrived to
the finishing line. When the hare woke up, she ran with all her might but it was too late, the turtle had won the
race.
That day was very sad for the hare and she learnt a lesson she would never forget: you must never mock of the
others.

LA LIEBRE Y LA TORTUGA
En el mundo de los animales había una liebre muy arrogante porque les decía a todos que era la más rápida.
Por eso siempre se reía de la tortuga lenta.
-¡Mira la tortuga! ¡Oye tortuga, no corras tanto que te vas a cansar de ir tan rápido! - Decía la liebre riéndose de
la tortuga.
Un día, estaban hablando y a la tortuga se le ocurrió hacer una extraña apuesta con la liebre.
-Seguro que puedo ganarte una carrera- dijo ella.
- ¿A mí? - preguntó la liebre asombrada.
-Si a ti. Apostemos por esa piedra y veamos quién gana la carrera.
La liebre, muy divertida, aceptó. Todos los animales se reunieron para ver la carrera. El camino y la meta
estaban señalizados. Una vez estuvo lista, la carrera comenzó entre grandes aplausos.
Confiada en su velocidad, la liebre dejó ir a la tortuga y ella se quedó holgazaneando. ¡Tuvo tiempo suficiente
para ganar a una criatura tan lenta!
Entonces ella echó a correr, corrió rápido como el viento mientras la tortuga iba lenta, pero sin detenerse. De
inmediato ella se adelantó. Se detuvo junto a la carretera y se sentó a descansar.
Cuando la tortuga pasó a su lado, la liebre volvió a burlarse de ella. Dejó su ventaja y emprendió su paso rápido.
Hizo lo mismo varias veces, pero, a pesar de sus burlas, la tortuga siguió su camino hasta llegar a la meta.
Cuando la liebre se despertó, corrió con todas sus fuerzas, pero ya era demasiado tarde, la tortuga había
ganado la carrera.
Ese día fue muy triste para la liebre y aprendió una lección que nunca olvidaría: nunca debes burlarte de los
demás.

8. This story is about a hare that was very fast and at the same time, was very vain
with the other animals. On the other hand, there was a tortoise that was very slow
when walking.
(Esta historia es de una liebre que era muy veloz y a la vez, se mostraba muy
vanidosa con los otros animales. Por otra parte, se encontraba una tortuga
que era muy lenta al caminar).

9. This aspect provoked the mockery of the hare, which sometimes laughed at
her and told her with irony that she hoped she would not have to rush to where
she was going.
(Este aspecto provocó la burla de la liebre, la cual en ocasiones se reía
de ella y le decía con ironía que esperaba que no tuviera que llegar de
prisa hacia donde se dirigía).

10. The tortle, already annoyed, told him, "You are very fast when you walk, however,
I challenge you to a race and I am sure that I am going to beat you." Of course,
the hare laughed and accepted the challenge.
(La tortuga ya molesta, le dijo, «tú eres muy rápido al andar, sin embargo,
te reto a una carrera y estoy segura que te voy a ganar». Por supuesto que,
la liebre se echó a reír y aceptó el desafío).

11. In one of those stops, the already bored hare decided to take a nap. Upon
waking up, he realized that the tortoise was reaching the finish line, however it
was too late, since the tortoise had won the race. She could not believe it.
(En una de esas paradas, la liebre ya aburrida, decidió tomar una siesta.
Al despertar se percató que la tortuga estaba llegando a la meta, sin
embargo, era demasiado tarde, ya que la tortuga había ganado la carrera.
No lo podía creer).

12. For her part, the tortoise was applauded by the other animals and from then
on, the hare never messed with her again.
(Por su parte, la tortuga fue ovacionada por los demás animales y a
partir de ese entonces, la liebre jamás volvió a meterse con ella).
