You might respond by telling

7. When the location is feminine,
it is preceded by the article “la.”
In this case, there is no need
for a contraction.
You simply say: a la
Voy a la universidad.
8. However, when the location is
masculine, it is preceded by the
article “el.” This is one of the rare
cases when you need to use a
contraction in Spanish.
