Built to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Saint Quentin, it was both Philip II’s residence,
monastery and royal pantheon (most of the kings of the Hispanic Monarchy and later Spain are buried
there). It also hosts a library.

Olivares, he moved to the court and
started painting for the royal family
-He met Rubens and could observe the
royal collections (paintings bought by

-He travelled twice to Italy, where he
drew inspiration from the Renaissance
masters and Caravaggio.
-During his whole life, he fought to be
recognized as an artist and not as a
simple craftsman.
