THE MIDDLE AGES
2. The Romanesque Era is an artistic period that
corresponds to the High Middle Ages (476 – c.
1000).
In Architecture they used the semicircular arch;
there were small churches with thick walls;
these ones had small windows (“vanos” in
Spanish) that let very little light to come in. All
these features helped people to get an intimate
prayer.
In Music they developed a kind of chant that
was also intimate. It was called Gregorian Chant.
THE ROMANESQUE ERA
14. a) They are monophonic pieces (only one voice or
melody) and a capella chants (without any
instrumental accompaniment).
b) They were sung in Latin.
c) Their rhythm is free; the phrasing is respectful with
the structure of the text and their phrases are
separated by pauses.
d) The melody is wave-like and fluent; it is generally
built by second and third intervals. It is sung in a
natural way, paying attention to the phrasing and the
pauses to take breath.
Characteristics of Gregorian chant
16. a) Monophonic chants with instrumental
accompaniment, frequently a viella (bowed string)
or a lute (plucked string).
b) Different rhythmic patterns are used, associated to
the accented or unaccented syllables of the text.
c) They were sung in vernacular languages (Galician-
Portuguese, Occitan or langue d´oc, langue d´oil,
German).
d) They deal with varied topics: heroic, love, satyric,
etc.
e) Only the vocal melody is written.
Characteristicsof troubadoursongs
17. Trobadours in Europe
a) Galician-Portuguese
b) Troubadours - Southern
France: written in langue
d´oc (provenzal)
c) Troveros – Northern
France: written in langue
d´oil
d) Minnesänger - Germany:

20. MARTÍN CÓDAX: Mia irmana fremosa
Mia irmana fremosa, treydes comigo
a la igreja de Vig´u é o mar salido,
e miraremos las ondas!
Mia irmana fremosa, treydes comigo
a la igreja de Vig´u é o mar levado:
e miraremos las ondas!
A la igreja de Vig´u é o mar salido,
e verrá i mia madre o meu amigo:
e miraremos las ondas!
A la igreja de Vig´u é o mar levado,
e verrá i mia madre o meu amado:
dama verdadera,
y que el celoso caerá herido
antes de que yo llegue.

22. The Gothic Era is an artistic period that corresponds to the
Late Middle Ages (11th - 15th centuries).
In Architecture the pointed arch was used and large
cathedrals were built with beautiful stained glass windows
through which the light passed; the purpose was to direct
the prayer to heaven, in a very expressive way.
These ideas have their parallel in Music with the
development of polyphony or superposition of vocal lines.
In a geometrical way, we can imagine that Romanesque
music (Gregorian chant) means horizontality and Gothic
music (polyphony) means verticality.
THE GOTHIC ERA
28. a) Birth: 9th century
Two genres: Organum and Discantus
b) Ars Antiqua: 12th and 13th centuries
Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris: Léonin and Pérotin
Santiago de Compostela Cathedral: Codex Callixtinus
c) Ars Nova: 14 th century
Guillaume de Machaut: Notre Dame Mass
EVOLUTION OF MEDIEVAL POLYPHONY
35. ARS NOVA: S. XIV
G. de Machaut: “Agnus Dei” from Notre Dame Mass
36. The “Ars Nova” period (14th
century), in fact, established the
basis for a new era, which we name
the Renaissance Era.
