The modernisation of services is a central concern and the Lisbon European Council emphasised the importance of an inexpensive and world-class communications infrastructure, including the full use of the digital technologies such as the internet and mobile communications. In this presentation I review the state of affairs according the Services Directive and how further liberalization and implementation of the so called information society may increase the role of competitive european services in the globalised economy.
