The origins of the Convent of Saint Marcus lie in the 12th century, when Sancha of Castille, sister of King Alfonso VII, donated money to construct a modest building on the outskirts of the city to shelter pilgrims from the Camino de Santiago. In the 16th century, thanks to a donation from King Ferdinand the Catholic, the great Gothic-Plateresque style building was built. The works lasted until the beginning of the eighteenth century. The monastery became National Parador in 1964.
