«Metropolis. The image of city through the Fritz Lang’s camera». This paper tries to explain the Fritz Lang’s architecture and town-planning designs influences that were used in the sets of Metropolis. All over the film there so many references to the Expressionism, the Futurism and the Rationalism (Bruno Taut, Antonio Sant’Elia, Mies van Der Rohe, Le Corbursier and Ludwing Hilberseimer). This is a movie in which we can find out so many confrontations between the outer city (the privileged class) and the underground city (the working class), between the money and the worker, between the past (Babylonia) and the future (the Megalopolis in 2026) and between opened and lightened areas (stadium, the Garden of Eden) and dark places (factories and catacombs). Metropolis alludes to the biblical past (Tower of Babel) but, at the same time, it’s a reference to other movies about the future with stratified cities, different traffic heights, airways, pedestrian and covered streets, high and slender skyscrapers, and finally, outside lifts and illuminated signs.

The bibliography on modern reworkings of mythical narratives is immense: Greco-Latin myths in novels and adventure films, adaptations of Celtic, Norse, or Slavic myths in cinema, TV series and comics, the relationships between Eastern and Western myths… The list is endless and somehow overabundant compared to the smaller (though still huge) bibliography of theories of myth. The reason for this disproportion is due, in part, to the difficulty involved in abstracting general criteria. When critics seek to define myth, they must first strip it of spatial, temporal or circumstantial conditioning; only later will they be able to apply the label “myth” to this or that story.
Different key factors of our contemporary society (the phenomenon of globalisation, the dogmas of relativism, the logics of immanence) make the definition of myth even more difficult for the non-specialized public and for academic researchers alike. Indeed, academic reflection has not been immune to contemporary confusion about myth: in the wake of great psychoanalysts, sociologists or political experts, many researchers apply to their work certain conceptions of myth that identify it with individual sublimations, social deformations, or tendentious ideologies. For this reason, later on, the non-specialized public ―cheered on by the sensationalism of the press― likes to label any fallacy as “mythical”: apparently, the term “myth” cloaks the user of non-mythical discourses with a golden aura.
The volume has been coordinated by José Manuel Losada and Antonella Lipscomb. Both have traced an extensive trajectory in publishing books focused on myths: six volumes published in Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Myth: Theories of a Controversial Concept comprises nine studies on myth written by university researchers from Portugal, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom: all of them shed light on a coherent definition of myth.
On the 28th of February 2024, the volume was awarded the 2023 International "Aristotle of Thought and Essay" Prize, bestowed by the Sial Pigmalión Editorial Group in the Boardroom of the Faculty of Philology at the Complutense University.

dictio in terminis: ninguna de ellas (escultura, pintura, dibujo, grabado, fotografía,
tersen, 2004), medievales (Excalibur, John Boorman, 1981) o modernos (Nosferatu,

[en] Myth and Cinema in the 21st Century
The representation of myth in the static arts constitutes, in part, a contradictio in
terminis. None of them (sculpture, painting, drawing, engraving, photography, archi-
tecture, body art, installation art…) reflects the dynamism of a mythic tale. However,
with the possible exception of music, moving arts (theatre, dancing, opera, perfor-
mances…) combine space and time and thus allow for the mythical phenomenon to
occur and flow.
With its narrative structure, cinema seems to be the ideal form of art to represent
myth: it includes the advantages of visual, scenic and musical arts. Many contempo-
rary movies adapt ancient (Troy, Wolfgang Petersen, 2004), medieval myths (Excal-
ibur, John Boorman, 1981) or modern myths (Nosferatu, F.W. Murnau, 1922, Fran-
kenstein, James Whale, 1931, Don Juan en los infiernos, G. Suárez, 1991, Faust,
Alexander Sokurov, 2011). Other films, since the early stages of the medium, have
chosen science fiction as a genre (Voyage dans la lune, Georges Méliès, 1902), pav-
ing the way for works in which sci-fi and myth seem to compete (Metropolis, Fritz
Lang, 1927, Her, Spike Jonze, 2013).
Audience response has varied the cases, and the profusion of myths in the big
screen has learned to coexist with mythical representations in other arts, proving that
cinema does not extinguish the possibilities of myth. Thus, it becomes necessary to
conduct an in-depth study, both theoretical and practical, of the spaces that mythol-
ogy occupies in films, the contributions of cinematic technologies to mythical tales,
and how men and women’s perceptions of myth have changed today through the
relationship between myths and movies.
The articles of this volume, thoroughly selected among those received, fit conve-
niently to this problematic issue. The volume also contains an interview with Júlio
Bressane (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%BAlio_Bressane), Brazilian director
of more than thirty films, who offers us very interesting reflections on our subject.
As usual, several reviews on books about mythcriticism are offered to our readers.
Good reading!

Bonne lecture !
