2. The passive voice in English is generally used
in written records, in scientific articles and
technical documents, but also in newspapers
or other formal documents.
Usually we focus on the agents that lead the
actions, however, the passive voice allows us
to talk about objects, processes or people
who are passive subjects of actions
undertaken by other people, and thus give
them prominence in our speech.
In today's lesson we will focus on the formal
characteristics of the passive voice and next
week we will talk about the specific uses of
this structure.
La voz pasiva en inglés se utiliza en
general en registros escritos, en
artículos científicos y documentos
técnicos, pero también en periódicos
u otros documentos formales.
Normalmente nos centramos en los
agentes que protagonizan las
acciones, sin embargo, la voz pasiva
nos permite hablar de objetos,
procesos o personas que son sujetos
pasivos de acciones emprendidas por
otras personas, y de esta manera
darles protagonismo en nuestro
discurso.
En la lección de hoy nos centraremos
en las características formales de la
voz pasiva y la semana que viene
hablaremos de los usos específicos de
esta estructura.

3. The passive voice in English is a form
composed by the auxiliary verb TO BE
(which is only a grammatical tool without its
own meaning) and the past participle of the
main verb:
Application forms are sent by email.
(Literally: requests are sent by email.)
The car was washed yesterday.
(Literally: The car was washed yesterday)
1.The past participle: With regular verbs
it carries -ed ending. With irregular verbs,
the past participle is the third form of the
verb (to speak-spoke-spoken).
The participle is invariable - it has the same
form indifferently of the subject or of the
verbal time that is used.

compuesta por el verbo auxiliar TO BE
(que es solamente una herramienta
gramatical sin significado propio) y el
participio pasado del verbo principal:
Application forms are sent by email.
(Literalmente: las solicitudes son
enviadas por email.)
The car was washed yesterday.
(Literalmente: El coche fue lavado ayer)
1.El participio pasado: Con verbos
regulares lleva terminación -ed.
Con los verbos irregulares, el participio
pasado es la tercera forma del verbo
(to speak- spoke-spoken).
El participio es invariable – tiene la
misma forma indiferentemente del
sujeto o del tiempo verbal que se
utilize.

4. 2. The auxiliary TO BE: It bears the marks
of verbal tense (present, past, future) and
/ or aspect (progressive, perfect).
Therefore, the auxiliary TO BE is
conjugated. It can also be combined with
modal verbs.
Below, I illustrate some of the
modifications of the auxiliary TO BE of
the passive voice in function of the verbal
tenses and some modal verbs.
A. Present Simple: The car is washed
every week.
B.Present Progressive: The car is being
washed at the moment.
C. Past Simple: The car was washed
yesterday.
2. El auxiliar TO BE:
Lleva las marcas del tiempo verbal
(presente, pasado, futuro) y/o del aspecto
(progressive, perfect). Por lo tanto, el
auxiliar TO BE se conjuga. También
puede combinarse con verbos modales.
A continuación, ilustro algunas de las
modificaciones del auxiliar TO BE de la
voz pasiva en función de los tiempos
verbales y de algunos verbos modales.
APresente Simple: El coche se lava cada
semana.
B.Present Progressive: El coche está siendo
lavado en este momento.
C.Past Simple: El coche fue lavado ayer.

5. D. Past Progressive: The car was being
washed yesterday at 10 o'clock.
E. Present Perfect: The car has already
been washed.
F. Past Perfect: When I arrived, the car
had already been washed.
G. Future "will": The car will be washed
tomorrow.
H. Modal verb: The car should be
washed this weekend.
 D. Pasado progresivo: El coche estaba
siendo lavado ayer a las 10 en punto.
 E. Present Perfect: El coche ya ha sido
lavado.
 F. Past Perfect: Cuando llegué, el coche
ya había sido lavado.
 G. El "futuro" futuro: El coche será
lavado mañana.
 H. Verbo modal: El coche debe ser
lavado este fin de semana.

6. The passive voice is formed with the auxiliary
verb "to be" and the past participle of the
verb

8. 1. The object of the active sentence becomes
the subject of the passive.
2. The main verb is replaced by the auxiliary
"to be", in its same time, next to the main
verb in participle.
3. The subject of the main sentence becomes
the agent complement of the passive.
4. If we mention in the sentence of the
subject who performs the action (subject
agent), this will normally precede by the
preposition "by".
1. El objeto de la oración activa pasa a ser
el sujeto de la pasiva.
2. El verbo principal se sustituye por el
auxiliar “to be”, en su mismo tiempo,
junto al verbo principal en participio.
3. El sujeto de la oración principal pasa a
ser complemento agente de la pasiva.
4. Si hacemos mención en la oración del
sujeto que realiza la acción (sujeto
agente), este irá normalmente
precedido por la preposición “by”.

pasiva tenemos en cuenta los

10. The active voice is a type of grammatical voice
by means of which the verb is conjugated in
such a way that the subject realizes, executes or
controls the action of the verb, that is, it is an
agent.

Subject + verb + complements (direct, indirect
and / or circumstantial)

por medio de la cual se conjuga el
