2. Phrasal Verbs
Es un verbo compuesto formado por la combinación de un verbo y una partícula gramatical, es
decir, un adverbio o una preposición, o incluso por un verbo seguido por un adverbio y una
preposición.
Examples:
1. Get on :Subir/montarse
The bus was full.We couldn’t get on. El autobús estaba completo, no pudimos subirnos.
2.Come back :Volver a algún lugar.
Sally is leaving tomorrow and coming back on Saturday. Sally se va mañana y vuelve el sábado.
3.Break down :Dejar de funcionar , dejar de operar. (romperse)
Sorry I’m late.The car broke down. Siento llegar tarde. El coche dejó de funcionar (se rompió)
4. Look out : Ser cuidadoso, estar atento, permanecer atento.
Look out!There’s a car coming . Presta atención!, Viene un coche.
Take off :Despegar
It was my first flight.I was nervous as the plane took off. Fué mi primer vuelo. Estaba nervioso hasta que el avión
despegó.
3. Modal verbs of advice and obligation
Cuando queremos expresar permiso, prohibición (no permitir algo),
obligación o ninguna obligación usamos verbos modales.
For expressing advice we have the modals:
should and ought to (ought to isn't usually used in the negative and
interrogative form) to express advice.
need to to express necessity (only in the affirmative form).
needn't (without to) and the don't/doesn't have to are used to make clear
there's no needto do something.
must and have to express obligation.
mustn't for expressing prohibition (obligation of not doing)
4. Examples
1. Tienen que llevar sus uniformes en la escuela. They have to wear their uniforms at
school.

'Debe' nos muestra que la obligación proviene del hablante. 'Must' shows us that the
obligation comes from the speaker.

Tengo que entregar mi tesis para mañana. I must hand in my thesis by tomorrow.

Debo llamar a mis padres. I really must call my parents.
5. You should eat less fat if you want to lose weight. tu deberias comer menos grasa si
desea perder peso

enfermar
8. You shouldn´t be rude to anybody. No deberías ser grosero con nadie.
9. You oughtn´t to tell lies. No debes mentir.

they will dance all night long. Baila rán toda la noche
2 .Next month he will be ten years old. El mes que viene cumplirá diez años.
3.How old will he be next month? ¿Cuántos años cumplirá el mes que viene?
4.It will be very cold in the winter. Hará mucho frío en el invierno.
5.This winter will not be so cold. Este invierno no hará tanto frío.
6.I will always help you. Siempre te ayudaré.
7.We will win this match! ¡Ganaremos este partido!
8.I will drop by later. Pasaré por tu casa más tarde.
9.What will they be doing all night long? ¿Qué estarán haciendo toda la noche?
10.We will be working quite closely. Estaremos trabajando de manera muy cercana.
11.This guy will be sleeping when you find him. Este tipo estará durmiendo cuando lo
encuentres.
12.Tomorrow at three o'clock Josh will be cooking. Mañana a las tres Josh estará
cocinando.
13.It will be raining the entire week. Estará lloviendo toda la semana.
7. Tag question with be
Los tag questions son pequeñas frases o preguntas (mini-questions) que
se colocan al final de una oración afirmativa o negativa y que generalmente
tienen como objetivo confirmar o negar el contenido de la frase misma. Es el
equivalente al ¿verdad? español o al ¿no? más utilizado en países de
América.
Example:
It's a beautiful day, isn't it? .Es un día hermoso, ¿no?
Martha is angry, isn't she? .Martha está enojada, ¿verdad?
It was a beautiful day, wasn't it? .Fue un día hermoso, ¿verdad?
Martha was angry, wasn't she? .Martha estaba enojada, ¿no?
You were really tired, weren't you? .Estabas muy cansado, ¿verdad?
carlos should pass his exam, shouldn't he? .carlos debería aprobar su
examen, ¿no?
You can play the violin, can't you? .Sabes tocar el violín, ¿no?
He could find a job, couldn't he? . Pudo encontrar trabajo, ¿verdad?
