Uno de los métodos más utilizados es el establecer el umbral en base a un
porcentaje del valor máximo del SUV de una región de la imagen.
Este criterio se basa en estudios con maniquíes con esferas estacionarias
conteniendo una distribución uniforme de FDG.

El principal problema es su alta sensibilidad a las condiciones iniciales y a la
presencia de ruido e inhomogeneidades en la imagen.
Las técnicas más avanzadas, como las de agrupación difusa en combinación con
wavelets (FMCS-SW) o las de adaptación local difusa y estimación Bayesiana
(FLAB), parecen capaces de superar todas las dificultades asociadas a la imagen
PET-FDG.

No deben utilizarse técnicas de umbral fijo ya las de umbral adaptativo pueden
implementarse con relativa facilidad mediante un proceso de calibración.
En aquellos servicios que no cuenten con el respaldo de un servicio de física
médica, las técnicas de contorneo manual son preferibles a las de contorneo por
umbral fijo.
Para poder establecer cual es el mejor método de segmentación deberemos
primero estandarizar los procedimientos y a continuación comparar los hallazgos
de los diferentes grupos.
