1. Orishas and their Natural Elements: Part 1 Fire and Water
Orishas y sus Elementos Naturales: Parte 1 Fuego y Agua
In the Cuban Lucumi system we take Nature very seriously and
so should you. One of my goals is to get you to think for
yourselves by defining various concepts in different ways, to get
you think and grow. I am quick to share my logic and beliefs, but
I do not expect everyone to accept or adapt them because our
culture has flexibility. One controversial subject is the relationship
between Orishas; who mothered or fathered who? Who is a
brother, sister, son or daughter of who? The wise do not focus on
these relationships; what I believe may not agree with what you
believe. The same is true with my story of creation that does not
have various Orisha descending from above on a divining chain
(opele). For me mine is more believable and includes science; but
I respect others opinions and do not think less of them.
En el sistema Lucumí cubana tomamos muy en serio la naturaleza y lo
que debería. Una de mis metas es llegar a pensar por sí mismos
mediante la definición de varios conceptos de diferentes formas, para
conseguir que piensas y crecer. Soy rápido para compartir mi lógica y
creencias, pero yo no espero a todos a aceptar o adaptarlos porque
nuestra cultura tiene flexibilidad. Un tema controvertido es la relación
entre Orishas; que mothered o padre de quién? ¿Quién es un hermano,
hermana, hijo o hija de quién? El sabio no se centran en estas
relaciones; lo que creo que puede no estar de acuerdo con lo que usted

The same is true of the gender of various Orisha, there are many
opinions. Many Orisha have a camino (road or path) that is

2. different from the gender that we are introduced to them. There
are differences of opinions with colors, numbers and even what
power an immortal Orisha has. In Nigerian IFA for example
anyone has the possibility to become an orisa (Orisha), but not
part of the irunmole (those I who came first). In Lucumi of course
mortals do not become Orishas. One of the beautiful things about
our culture is building our foundation of beliefs and challenging
these beliefs so they fit in our philosophy. When we grow we
often modify our beliefs. When something does not seem to fit we
investigate it as we grow. Today we are going to categorize some
Orishas, particularly the Orishas who guard a natural element.
Perhaps this will help you, perhaps you will not agree and in the
end it is OK not to agree with me on everything I write. My goal
is not to convince you but to make you think and give you the
tools to build your own philosophy.
Lo mismo puede decirse del género de varias Orisha, hay muchas
opiniones. Muchos Orisha tienen un camino (camino o ruta) que es
diferente de la de género que se nos presenta a ellos. Hay diferencias
de opiniones con los colores, los números y hasta qué poder tiene un
Orisha inmortal. En Nigeria, por ejemplo, IFA nadie tiene la posibilidad
de convertirse en un Orisa (Orisha), pero no es parte de la Irunmole
(aquellos que me vine primero). En Lucumí de los mortales del curso no

3. ELEMENT FIRE: There are very few Orisha who have the
responsibility to guard fire. Of course they are not the element,
they guard and can manipulate the element and this is true of all
the Orishas and every element. Fire comes from the heat of the
earth in its original form. The twin wives of Olokun Oro Ina and
Ari Ina are the original guardians. Oro Ina the earth’s solids and
Ari Ina the earth’s liquid and gases; Olokun and his twin wives
live in his castle at the deepest part of the ocean where the twins
are comfortable being closer to the center of the earth. Each of
the twins first born inherited fire.
ELEMENTO FUEGO: Hay muy pocos Orisha que tienen la
responsabilidad de vigilar el fuego. Por supuesto que no son el
elemento, se guardan y pueden manipular el elemento y esto es cierto
de todos los Orishas y cada elemento. Fuego proviene del calor de la

Now let’s back up for just a quick moment to briefly explain that
these three were part of the seven who were made by Olodumare
from the stars; the other four were Eleggua, Eshu, Obatala and
Orunmila. This was before ashe was shared by Olodumare’s two
avatars, Olorun and Olofin. All the other Orishas came after when
Olofin made the earth livable. However humans came much later.
After the seven came four children from Oro Ina and Olokun and
four children from Ari Ina and Olokun on earth’s first livable day,
the day Olofin first shared ashe on the earth. Plants, fish, animals
and live things began on that day when Olokun’s waters met the

4. twins earth in the air. Fire, steam and ashe made their children
that day. Each of their children was fully grown that first day.
Ahora vamos a retroceder por un momento rápido para explicar
brevemente que estos tres eran parte de los siete que fueron hechas por
Olodumare de las estrellas; los otros cuatro eran Eleggua, Eshu, Obatalá

From Oro Ina and Olokun came Aggayu first and he has the
power of fire, his siters and brothers do not. Osanyin was second,
Orisha Oko was the third and Oduduwa was their last child. From
Ari Ina came Orun who as the firstborn has the power of fire.
Orun was followed by Babalu Aye, and Yemaya who were also
born full grown on that first day. The ashe that created these
ancient Orishas also made sperm and egg and other forms of
birth or propagation in plants. Many years later Ari Ina and
Olokun had a child born from making love in the same way
humans make babies, this “natural” child was Oya and she also
inherited the power of fire.
De Oro Ina y Olokun llegó Aggayú primero y él tiene el poder de fuego,

The only other Orisha who is connected to fire is the mighty
Oggun. Oggun was gifted fire by Oro Ina for his hearth. Unlike
the other Orishas with the power of fire his fire does not move
from his hearth. He can obviously manipulate fire, but it stays in
the hearth. However his hearth can be moved.
El único otro Orisha que está conectado al fuego es el poderoso Oggun.

Oro Ina: One of the seven Orishas made from stars; with her

sister Oro Ina and husband Olokun were the first three Orishas on
earth. She guards and manipulates all things liquid and gaseous
underground. She is the mother of Orun and Oya.
Aggayu: Firstborn son of Oro Ina and Olokun who was born the
first day of ashe fully grown. He guards and manipulates all

6. things related to Volcanoes. Father of Chango (Shango).
Orun: Firstborn son of Ari Ina and Olokun who was born the first
day of ashe fully grown. He guards and manipulates all fire above
ground and thought the skies (heavens). He is also the leader of
The Dead.
Oya: First naturally born child of Ari Ina and Olokun. She was
born as a baby and grew up in Olokun’s Palace. Main wife and
companion of Chango(Shango). Their children include their
firstborn, Bronsia, the Orisha of tornadoes. Oya is guards and
manipulates the wind. She also owns a river in Yoruba Land.
Chango (Shango) first born child of Aggayu and Yemaya who
was born as a child. He guards and manipulates thunder,
lightning, dance and drums. Has children with Obba and Oshun,
but settled with Oya.
Bronsia: Chango and Oya’s firstborn daughter also has the
power of fire to guard and manipulate.
Oggun: The Orisha of iron, wars and blades owns the hearth
where he uses Oro Ina’s gift of fire. The fire he uses cannot leave
his hearth.
NOTE: There are rumors that Orun has a firstborn who has the
power of fire, but I cannot confirm this. Certainly, I am one of his
priests yet as with all things concerning Orun there are mysteries
and secrets that cannot be shared.

7. Oro Ina: Uno de los siete Orishas hechos de estrellas; con su hermana
gemela y su esposo Ari Ina Olokun fueron los tres primeros Orishas en

Shortly after ashe came to earth Obatala married Yemaya and
their first child was Oshun the Orisha of rivers. Obatala many
forget has two water elements in the white snow and rain. Some
other Orishas who’s natural element is water include Olokun,
Obba, Owo, Ose, Yewa, Isinren, Olueri, Aaja, Olosa, Osumare,
Orungan, Erinle and Okie.
Yemaya : Ocean’s shallows, salt water shorelines, flats, seas
Olokun: Ocean’s deep
Obba: spring fed waters, a river in Nigeria
Owo: Specific sacred stream in Nigeria
Ose: Sacred Rivers
Yewa: Sacred mother river in Nigeria
Isinren: Swamps
Olueri: Unclaimed rivers share the spirit of Olueri

9. Aaja: Female whirlwinds
Osumare: Rainbow inside a waterfall
Orungun: Unseen water just below the surface and a connection
to things born in water
Babaiji: Male whirlwinds
Erinle: Healing springs
Okie: Lakes
ELEMENTO: AGUA
Poco después de ashe vino a la tierra Obatalá casó Yemaya y su primer
hijo era Oshun el Orisha de los ríos. Obatalá muchos olvidan tiene dos
elementos de agua en el blanco de la nieve y la lluvia. Algunos otros
Orishas que es elemento natural es el agua incluyen Olokun, Obba,

In part two we will connect more Orishas to the base elements of
Air and Earth and in part three we will discuss and connect the
spiritual to Nature. Do yourself a favor this week honor Nature by
improving it for just thirty minutes. Plant a tree, pick up litter in
your neighborhood forest, beach or park. The reward is you’ll feel
better and who knows maybe receive some ashe for your gift!
