INTRODUCTION
THERE ARE SEVERAL REASON FOR INCREASING
Water/Nitrogen USE EFFICIENCY IN AGRICULTURE
• FOR THE FARMER: Increase benefits – left his land
useful for the next generation.
• FOR THE CONSUMER: Buy food cheaper – more
people access to basic foods
• FOR EVERYONE: Reduce water and air pollution
• Meets with the European Union and Regional
enviromental policies.

Goals of this study
Evaluation of two strategies
1. Water supply adjustment Adjusment the irrigation
dose through a novel method for estimating ET
(Riego-Asesor Tool, patented and under
exploitation by the SME Hispatec1
)
2. Ammonium supply Force crops to use more N-
NH4
+
(less leachable) and less N-NO3

.
In a field grown muskmelon and endive crops.

The Riego-Asesor project is funded by the Ministry of Science
(MINECO) with FEDER co-financing through the project Retos

• RA models evapotranspiration.
• Soil water balance:
RIEGO-ASESOR TOOL
SWt = SW0 + P + I – RO – E – T
SWt: soil water content, SWo: initial soil water content, P: precipitation, I: Irrigation, RO:
Surface runoff, E: evaporation, T: transpiration
• The model use weather forecast and the ground cover
and the height of the plant.
• Evaporation and transpiration separately Cultivation

strategy
• The Riego-Asesor treatment saved 320 and
180 m3
per ha in muskmelon and endive
respectively, with no loss in yield.
• The Riego-Asesor treatment may had improved
the plant water status regard to the Farmer
treatment, and this led to a higher physiological
N efficiency.
• An approach for increasing agronomic N
efficiency may be to reduce or increase N rate
accordly with the irrigation dose.

2nd
strategy N-NH4

supply, RA(Ni) vs. RA (Am)
• Muskmelon performed like a NH4
+
sensitive plant and endive
like a NH4
+
tolerant plant.
• Ammonium feed plants were using actively N-NO3
-
.
• At 25-30 cm depth, the concentrations of both NO3
-
and NH4
+
did not reflect the treatments differences.
• The low soil NO3
-
concentration at 25-30 cm depth at the end of
the growth cycle may indicated that plants at this stage were
absorbing almost enterly all the NO3
-
supply or transformed
from NH4
+
.
• In base to our data we cannot be certain that the use of NH4
+
in
sustitution of NO3
-
will be a suitable strategy to reduce NO3
-
lixiviation.
