1. Las partes del coche (primera parte)
uy buenas a todos. En este post vamos a aprender un poco de vocabulario.
Esta vez voy a intentar hablar un poco más lento, pero recuerden que tienen
la transcripción completa en la página.
Hi everyone. In this post we're going to learn a bit of vocabulary. This time I'm go-
ing to try to speak a bit slower, but remember that you've got the full transcription in
the webpage
Voy a dirigirme a "ustedes" (segunda persona del plural). Se los digo para que
cuando me escuchen o lean el texto vean cómo uso los tiempos verbales. Eso
sería una tarea interesante también.
I'm going to address "you" (second person of the plural). I'm telling you so that
when you listen or read the text you see how I use the tenses. That'd be an interest-
ing task as well
Recuerden que en gran parte de España dicen "vosotros", pero prácticamente en
el resto de países hispanohablantes, así como algunas regiones de España, dicen
"ustedes".
Remember that in great part of Spain they say "vosotros", but in practically the rest
of the Spanish speaking countries, as well as some areas of Spain, they say "ust-
edes"
Pero bueno, en esta ocasión digamos que el principal objetivo es vocabulario, y he
pensado que podríamos ver, por ejemplo, palabras y conjuntos de palabras rela-
cionadas con el coche.
Anyways, in this occasion let's say that the main target is vocabulary, and I thought
we could see, for example, words and groups of words related to the car

2. Cuando viene el momento de comprarse un coche, la gente opta normalmente por
un turismo, que es digamos el medio más común y en el que caben de 5 a 7 per-
sonas.
When the times come to buy a car, people normally opt for a passenger car, which
is, say, the most common means (of transportation) and in which 5 to 7 persons
can fit
Un turismo está pensado para transportar personas, no personas y mercancías
como otros vehículos tales como furgonetas o camiones.
A passenger car is intended for carrying people, not people and goods like other
vehicles such as vans or trucks
Si en el lugar donde viven, sea una casa o un edificio, tienen garaje, probable-
mente esta sea la mejor opción para dejar el coche por la noche. Así estaría al
resguardo del frío y obviamente en un lugar más seguro.
If in the place where you live, this being a house or a building, you've got a garage,
that's probably the best option to leave the car overnight. That way it's be protect-
ed from the cold and obviously in a safer place
Si viven en un edificio lo más probable es que tengan un garaje comunal, en
donde cada piso tiene su plaza de garaje asignada.
If you life in a building, you're likely to have a communal garage, where each flat
has got its allocated parking space
Ah, una cosa antes de seguir. Si van de viaje a países de América Latina lo más
probable es que no oigan la palabra coche, sino carro o auto.
Ah, just one thing before continuing. If you travel to countries in Latin America
you're not quite likely to hear the word coche, but carro or auto instead
Los coches tienen obviamente cuatro ruedas. Cada una de ellas se compone del
neumático en sí, que es digamos la goma exterior con su cámara de aire, y la llan-
ta.
Cars have obviously four wheels. Each of them is made up of the tyre itself, which
is, say, the exterior rubber with its inner tube, and the rim
La llanta es la pieza metálica sobre la que se asienta el neumático. Para algunas
personas es una parte importante de la estética del coche y ponen llantas con
diseños más elegantes.
The rim is the metallic part over which the tyre is placed. For some people it's an
important part of the aesthetic of the car, and they install rims with more elegant
designs
Sobre la llanta, tenemos el tapacubos, que tiene una función protectora y embelle-
cedora.

3. On top of the rim, we find the hubcap, which has a protective and embellishing
function
Si conducen de noche o por un túnel, deben encender las luces. Los faros del
coche proyectan la luz que te permite ver por dónde estás yendo en estas situa-
ciones.
If you drive at night or through a tunnel, you must turn on the lights. The headlamps
of the car projects the light that lets you see where you're going in these situations.
Hay varios tipos de luces. Tenemos las luces de posición –que sirven básicamente
para dar visibilidad al coche–, luces de cruce –o luces cortas, que te permiten ver
lo que tienes unos metros por delante–, luces de carretera –o largas, para ver a
todavía más largas distancias.
There are several types of lights. We have the position lamps –which are basically
used for making the car more visible–, dipped beam –or ¨short lights¨, low beam,
which let you see a few metres in front of you–, main beam –or "long", high beam,
so you can see even further distances.
Para mucha gente creo es más común decir luces cortas o largas, que creo sea
más fácil para ustedes también.
For many people I think it's common to say "short" or "long" lights, which I think it's
easier for you all as well.
Como saben, no deben poner las luces largas si vienen coches de frente porque
deslumbrarían al conductor. Deslumbrar es cuando una luz muy intensa te da di-
rectamente a los ojos y te turba la vista por unos segundos.
As you know, you must not switch the high beam if there are cars heading straight
towards you (in the other lane) because you'd dazzle the driver. To dazzle is when
a very bright light lights up directly into your eyes and your vision gets hazy for a
few seconds.
Si hay niebla, también pueden poner las luces antiniebla. Si no recuerdo mal, las
traseras son obligatorias pero no todos los coches tienen luces antiniebla de-
lanteras.
If there is fog, you can also use the fog lamps. If I remember well, the rear ones are
mandatory but not all of the cars have front fog lamps.
No me hagan mucho caso que igual me equivoco xD
Don't trust me too much on that as I may be wrong xD
Cuando quieran girar a la derecha o a la izquierda, o también cuando van a cam-
biar de carril, deben poner los indicadores. Los coches tienen que tener al menos
dos delanteros y dos traseros.

4. When you want to turn right or left, or also when you're going to change the lane,
you must put the indicators. Cars have to have al least two front and two rear indi-
cators
Como se habrán podido imaginar, los indicadores (también llamados intermitentes)
son esas luces amarillas (¿o son naranjas...?) que parpadean y que permiten co-
municar a los otros conductores que vamos a girar.
As you might have guessed, the indicators (also called intermitentes) are those yel-
low lights (or are they orange...?) that blink and let you convey to other drivers that
we're going to turn
Los coches pueden ser diésel o gasolina, y obviamente necesitan un motor para
funcionar. En la actualidad, el motor suele estar en la parte delantera del coche,
bajo el capó.
Cars can work with diesel or petrol, and obviously they need an engine to function.
Nowadays, the engine is usually in the front part of the car, under the bonnet (or
hood in the US
En la parte trasera, por otro lado, está el maletero. En realidad, yo (y también mi
familia) siempre lo he llamado portabulto. Acabo de chequearlo en internet y se ve
que la palabra maletero es muchísimo más común.
In the rear part, on the other hand, we find the boot (or trunk in the US). In reality, I
(and also my family) have always called it portabulto. I've just checked it on the in-
ternet and it seems like the word
De hecho, aunque Google sí encuentra la palabra portabultos (en plural) para
cosas similares –es decir, portar o llevar bultos o maletas–, no he encontrado esta
palabra en el diccionario de la RAE (Real Academia Española) :O
As a matter of fact, even though Google does find the word portabultos (in its plural
form though) meaning similar things –that is, to carry packages or bags–, I haven't
found this word in the RAE dictionary :o
Pero vamos, para mí la parte trasera del coche para llevar el equipaje es y será
siempre el portabulto :d (no aprendan esto por favor, y si les gusta la palabra usen
la que versión en plural, que sería la más correcta, jajaja)
But in any case, for me the rear part of the car to carry you baggage is and will al-
ways be the portabulto :d (don't learn this please, and if you like the word use the
plural version, which would be the proper one. hahaha)
