¡Créate un hábito diario!
Heeeello everybody. Today I'd like to talk to you a bit about something I consider
very very important to get things done: the creation of habits
In this post, by the way, I'll be using a lot the first person of the plural (like we are,
we are, we feel...). The reason is, basically, because plenty of times I not only write
for you, but also for myself
It's a way to motivate myself and make myself remember of the important stuff,
those things I must not forget. So, as far as your interest is concerned, I think it's
interesting you pay attention to this form and take the chance to familiarise your-
selves with it, as I think it's not that usual to see it in the written language
In anything we are determined to do, this being a health-related goal, or a goal
about learning a language (such is your case with learning Spanish or mine with
Italian or English), or, I'd dare to say, anything, there will always be moments when
we'll not feel like walking towards that goal at all
H
2. This can even be those things that, at the beginning we were super motivated to
do. We felt like doing them, motivated, with strength and will to do whatever it took
And, however, there are days in which, for some reason, we feel so lazy about car-
rying out these necessary actions to fulfil that goal
timarlos.
That happens to all of us. And, if you think about it, it may be the great difference
between people that really get things done, successful people, and the rest of the
population. The little details. Little ones, yes, but that's no reason to underestimate
them
So what does creation of habits have to do with this stuff about little details? Well,
those little daily habits, those routines that we carry out every day (and that we've
planned in advance) are the ones that, truly, are going to make us reach that goal
that we were determined to reach!
Empieza con el final en la mente
Start with the end in mind
This idea is widespread on all this world of coaching and productivity. It's the sec-
ond of the seven habits that Stephen Covey described in this famous book: the
seven habits of highly effective people
If you have read it, this may be a good occasion to do it in Spanish, if your level in
high enough
3. This is, no doubt of it, very important. The first thing we'd have to do before starting
to design our daily routine is getting to know what our goal is
do de nuestro corazón, queremos hacer algo.
Visualize the result, what we want to obtain. This, ideally, requires us to stop and
think what our principles are and why, at the deepest part of our heart, we want to
do something
Looking into this we'll realise of how important reaching our goals really is, which, in
turn, will help us have a real reason to take action every day
¿Cómo nos puede ayudar la rutina diaria?
How can a daily routine help us?
Bien.
Well. Once we know why we want what we want to do, we must design an action
plan. Or, as I like to say in a sort of more comic way with my friends, a master plan
And a very important part of that action plan is the daily routine
¿Vamos a aprender
A clear example could be with learning Spanish, without going any further. In my
case, I have the goal of gaining fluency with my Italian. Are we going to learn, real-
ly, to the level we want, studying or listening to audios a couple of days a week?
No. The progress en such a case is going to be very slow, and in my experience
we're going to reach a point where we'll simply get stuck. Yes, this point always
happens, whatever it is what we're learning. The learning plateau if a phenomena
almost inherent to the acquisition of new skills
Acabaremos desmoti-
vados/as y abandonaremos.
But, seriously, with a "routine" of two days a week... it's more than likely that we get
stuck in that plateau without making any progress. We'll end up demotivated and
will give up
But, for me, the real weakness of such a routine is that it requires a lot of will power.
Studying Spanish (or whatever language) from 4 to 5 is not an automatic sort of
thing
We feel lazy because we're not improving too much and, in this specific case, our
will has gone in other daily responsibilities (work, family, do the shopping...)
Instead of that, I think it's much better to study a bit of Spanish every or almost
every day, without missing it. That's what I like most about Duolingo system, for ex-
ample. It gives us the option to put set our daily goal so that we force ourselves to
go and study, at least, that minimum
That minimum can be from 10 minutes to half an hour, ¡whatever we want! A daily
minimum required, and, if we've got more time, we can lengthen it or complement it
with some audio, readings in Spanish suitable to our level... whatever we've
planned in that "master plan"
But, yes, at the heart of this action plan I think the daily habit is key because –and
here is most important message of this post– as time passes it will require less and
less will power
It'll become more and more automatic. Each time we'll need to think less to carry
out this action, because it'll be programmed in the deepest part of our brain (well,
or somewhere in there)
With that little daily effort (10-15 minutes!), and with time –perhaps a couple of
months– our brain will find the way to shape and save energy
We won't need to think so much in order to focus and carry out the task. It's like
when we walk or we drive a car without thinking in the pedals (do you remember
how difficult it was at the beginning when you were learning? now you don't think
that much about that, do you?)
So that's it, friends. I simply wanted to talk a bit about this idea that, although sim-
ple, it's truly very powerful
But remember that at the core of everything is that why we want to learn. We must
have this clear so that that inner engine we have keeps being alive and encour-
ages us to keep going
Let's visualize what it'd be if, for example, we managed to communicate in the lan-
guage we're learning. Let's feel it. Does it make us happy? Is that what we want?
That "happy ending", friends, starts now and keeps going on the day-to-day
6. That Chinese proverb says that a 10000 km journey starts with a single step. And I
would add, in the context of this post, that that journey is made of thousands of little
steps that, eventually, makes us reach our destiny
Que tengan un buenísimo día. ¡Chao!
