2. HACE CASI 30 AÑOS, A.C.WILSON Y SUS COLEGAS PRESENTARON RESULTADOS QUE INDICABAN QUE LA
INVIABILIDAD HIBRIDA ENTRE ESPECIES EVOLUCIONAN 10 VECES MÁS RÁPIDO EN MAMÍFEROS QUE EN
AVES Y RANAS. AQUÍ VUELVO A EXAMINAR ESTA PREGUNTA PARA PÁJAROS Y MAMÍFEROS QUE UTILIZAN
DATOS MOLECULARES MODERNOS (ADN DEL CITOCROMO B MITOCONDRIAL) Y UN MÉTODO MÁS
APROPIADO FILOGENÉTICAMENTE ENFOQUE ESTADÍSTICO. MIS ANÁLISIS CONFIRMAN QUE LOS
MAMÍFEROS DIVERGENTES PIERDEN LA CAPACIDAD DE FORMAR HÍDRICOS VIABLES MÁS RÁPIDO QUE
AVES.

• As a fair indicator of the rate of evolution of complete
hybrid infeasibility, I identified the most distant pair of
hybridizable species within a monophyletic group and
recorded the amount of DNA divergence between them
in the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (cyt b) ( Fig. 1).
This approach, which uses a unique value from each
monophyletic group, avoids the problems of non-
independence from the previous work. Hybrid species of
birds and mammals were identified using Gray's
checklists (Gray 1954, 1958), the same sources used by
Wilson and his colleagues. I tried to follow the criteria of
Wilson and colleagues when counting a couple of
