Un modelo de simulación es una descripción
del sistema lo suficientemente detallada para
calcular los estados durante el tiempo.
Software de simulación usan los modelos
para calcular el estado del sistema mientras
transcurre el tiempo.
Modelos se categorizan por el tipo de
cambios de estado que pueden ocurrir.

Notas del editor
By “similar” we don’t seek exact equivalent behavior– but good enough to help us make better decisions using the model.Models are typically purpose built – we have a specific question to answer – or goal in mind (find hidden performance) – and we create a model for that application.Although simulation can be done with physical models as well as computer models, our focus is on computer models. The wind tunnel model in airplane design is the classic use of a physical model. With the advances in computers and graphics there has been a strong growth in the use of computer models.Simulation has traditionally been used as a design tool – i.e. to design or improve a system of interest. However the use of simulation has been expanding into the other areas. For example by running the simulation model in scaled real time we can use the model as a replacement for the real system for testing out control software or training workers. This is an expanding area of application for simulation. Simulation can also be used as a an aid to operating a system. For example simulation can be used to generate actual production schedules on a manufacturing line. Our focus here will be in simulation applied to system design. In general – simulation is done with the aid of specialized software designed specifically for that purpose. The earliest simulation products appeared in the 1960’s and software has advanced significantly over the past half century. In this course we will focus on simulation using the Simio software.
With simulation you make your mistakes in the model instead of the real system.
Three running models
NOTE: if we used the average (3.5) for the inter-arrival time and service time we would get no lines. KPI’s would be perfect!Let’s begin by taking a very small system and creating a simulation by hand. We will do by hand what the simulation software will do for us. Our goal is to gain some understanding in exactly what is taking place inside simulation software. We will simulate the first 15 hours of a single server queuing system. Our system has random arrivals and service times – so we need a way to draw samples from a random distribution. We will use a 6-sided die for purpose, with each side being the time between arrivals, or the system time. Our purpose is to record KPI’s to understand the behavior of the system. Rolling the die produces the arrival times and service times shown in the table.By simulation – we mean “act out” the system. The system behavior evolves as two events occur: Arrive and Depart. The simulation must sequence the events in their proper order, and track the state changes (server state, queue length) over time.
We can do this by hand – but a computer can do it for us, and let us run many (millions) of jobs through the system.Whenever an arrival occurs we schedule the next arrival. This keeps our list of future events to manage small, since only one arrival is scheduled at time.In addition to scheduling the next arrival, if the server is idle we make it busy and schedule Depart, otherwise we wait in the Queue. When the depart event occurs, if we have waiting customers we remove the first and schedule the departure, otherwise we change to server state to idle.Notice that the first two columns is essentially a list of events to execute at a specified simulated time. This is referred to as a “event calendar”. The simulation moves the simulated time from one event to the next event and then executes the event logic. This is often referred to as a “next-event” time advance mechanism. The computer can also record statistics, and animate the movement through the system.Assumptions (no breakdowns, zero start time, sequence independent, etc.).
From our table we can compute our KPI’s.Average wait = sum of waiting times divided by number of jobs.Maximum is largest of the set.Average queue is time weighted queue length (area under the curve, divided by length of time).Maximum is largest number over time.Server utilization is the time weighted server state (area under the curve, divided by the length of time). We only “ran” our simulation for 15 minutes of simulated time to produce these results. If we ran longer we might expect these numbers to change. In fact they become very large. So one of the questions that needs to be answered is how long do we need to run to have results that we can trust.
A “model” defines how the states of the system changes over time. Simulation software typically uses a next-event mechanism to move simulated time forward.
Deterministic models have no variation. These are rare. Most systems have multiple sources of variation. For example tasks performed by people always vary – external inputs (customers, materials) vary – and exceptions occur (failures). The terms discrete and continuous refer to the changing nature of the states that describe the system. Some states (e.g. the length of a queue, status of a worker) change at discrete points in time (called event times). Other states (e.g. pressure in a tank, temperature in an oven) change continuous over time. Some systems are pure discrete or continuous, while others have both types of states present. Some times we take a discrete system and approximate it with continuous states. For example, we might approximate the population of birds in a geographical region by a continuous state, even though in fact it is discrete (based on birth-death).
Continuous systems are defined by differential equations that specify the rate of change – simulation software uses numerical integration to generate a solution for the equations over time. Each equation is of the form rate = F(); equations cannot be solved mathematicallySystem Dynamics is a graphical approach for creating simple models using the same underlying concept. Flows (rates) into Stocks (levels). Sources and sinks for flows.Often used to model population dynamics, market growth/decay, etc.
Events model the points in time when the state can change (arrive, depart). Old way of doing things.Processes model a sequence of actions that take place over time (seize worker, delay by time, release worker). Easier than events – flexible.Objects describe the model from the point of view of the facility. The easiest of all. Simio combines ease of objects with flexibility of processes.Agents are a special case of objects – the system behavior emerges from the interaction of a large number of autonomous intelligent objects (populations, markets, etc.).Simio is a multi-paradigm modeling tool that combines these views into a single framework. You can use a single paradigm, or combine multiple paradigms in the same model.
Validation of “as is” and “to-be” models.
Pick your first model carefully. Select something where the simulation can deliver significant value, but is not so grand that you get bogged down in modeling, data collection, etc.Sometimes too much detail and “believing” results conflict – it’s necessary to add additional detail to make the model more “believable”.If you are new to simulation – don’t hesitate to get help in formulating the model – a little help and advice on the front end can save huge on the back end.
